Meeting people off the internet

Just thinking about it...

The first time I spoke to my boyfriend was on MSN...although we went to the same school.
Does that count?

That's kiiinda like with my husband and me! I would've likely met him /eventually/ as we're both Atlanta Browncoaters. 😛

Hee, well my boyfriend and I were in the same class as each other when we were 14, but never spoke.
Then two years later, I was listening to The Beatles, and you had an option on MSN to share what you were listening to, so he could see it, he commented that it was a good song, and 4 years later, here we are!

Helter Skelter is our song now too 😀

I've only met one person off the internet. He's my friend from England. He's one of my best friends, and I love when he comes to visit. He should come next year and spend a week or two with Gary and me. 🙂

I've met one friend from Buffy fandom, and three from an earlier fandom (soooo long ago!). The social aspect of it each time made me nervous - social stuff always does - but I was never worried about my safety. My friends were exactly who they had said they were.

The important thing is to talk to people online because you share interests, not because they want to meet you in person. Your location should never be the first thing they find out about you.

It is noted that your precise location is secret. ;P

I have met the lovely OccaQuokka a few times. She has even taken me horse riding for the first time which was amazing. Unfortunately, Gem actually DID try to kill me 😉 as she put me on a horse that threw the hell out of me! hehe.

Don't regret it for two seconds though, was a great experience for me.

I also met a boyfriend on line, he was sweet as pie and the most gentle lovely man I've ever met. He saw me at a pub but was to shy to approach me so he asked his friends if they knew me and somehow found my myspace and sent me a message saying he thought I was beautiful. He took me out on a date and we dated for about 3 months. It ultimately didn't work out romantically but he was a good friend of mine until he passed away.

I guess that means all positive experiences from me 🙂

That's a pretty cool meet-up story, until the tragic part at the end...

I've met a few people from IRC channels and other non-buffy boards, it's always gone well, meet up in a public place and get to know them is pretty fool-proof. I really enjoyed making new friends, and we meet up every summer to get up to some 'divilment'.

I would also like to meet fellow buffy fans in real life. Being able to have a conversation with someone who understands what BtVS can mean to another soul is a pretty cool thing, and sadly something lacking at the mo.

I would also recommend Skype, so you can see into their closet and make sure there are no skeletons. No one likes to meet a real life 'Ted'.

Never. I'm not really a social person, and I think it'll be awkward to arrange to meet up. I think it would be cool to accidentally bump into someone I know online, like at school or something. Anyway, no one in my country goes on BB, so...

I often avoid telling people this teeny detail of how I met my husband. ...because, well, I've always thought online dating sites, etc, were silly business. 😛 ...and I gotta admit, I still chuckle inside a little at the whole online dating thing.

That being said, I *did not* meet my husband on an online dating site. I DID, however, "speak" to him for the very first time via Twitter. We met "for business" (At the time, I was writing a webseries and was looking for someone to do the music for it, so we met to discuss the matter). ...and of course I told him ahead of time that I would be bringing my mace:

*snicker*

I didn't have a cell phone that day (I had dropped it in a glass of water the night before... unknowingly. ...and it had soaked in there overnight. -_-), so we planned ahead! The great plan was to meet at IHOP. ...because it was already late in the evening and I thought, "Hey! IHOP's open 24 hours and largely public, well-lit, etc; right?" ...Not in our case. -_- Apparently, unbeknownst to us, the IHOP we decided to meet at closed at 11pm (Weird, right?), which I guess it was already after, and I found myself pulling into a mostly abandoned, dark parking lot... The only car there was his. That gave me a bit of the wiggins, so I didn't get out of my car but instead told him to follow me to another restaurant. 😛

Long story short, he didn't kill me. ...though I'm sure there are some days he wishes he had. ;D We have since been known as "Malashlachi" (That's our celebrity couple name. 😛). XD

Oh! I forgot to add... My husband makes fun of me for marrying him (Like that makes sense. I know; right?) because I sometimes make fun of him for all of the "friends" he says he has that he's never met IRL. ...and the long list of people he HAS met IRL after "meeting" online. 😛

We also currently have a "friend" pending a planeride here to visit on the 6th of April. I feel more comfy with it this time because my big strong man'll protect me. ;P

And... Holy She-Posts-A-Lot, Batman!

...I too am in favor of a BB meetup! 😀 We go to an Atlanta Browncoats (Firefly/Serenity) meetup once a month. I wonder about planning something similar for BB folks in the area... if there are any. 😛

this is a really cute story!!!!

I think it would be cool to accidentally bump into someone I know online, like at school or something...

I've totally done that! I saw someone at a restaurant who reminded me of someone I'd seen on a friend's page on Xanga! ...Boy howdy did he think it was weird when I walked up to him and mentioned it. For the record: SAYING you're not a stalker does not not a stalker make. ...and I think this guy knew that. I really wasn't stalking him though. ...seriously. I just thought it was cool. ...very "small worldish", you know? ...Anyway, I'm not sure that he did. D:

&& Thank You!!! I like to reminisce on it! 😀 I keep meaning to put the whole story on here somewhere, but I haven't quite taken the time to get the whole story down in pen (orrrr... keystroke). Once my husband and I were going to do a co-op blog, and our first post was going to be our story, written in a tag-team sort of way: his in one color font and mine in another. ...but we never finished it. Maybe I'll post what we have so far and then sum up on the rest. LOL...

I'm always leery of even talking to people on the internet. I like to get to know people in general before letting them into my world. I wouldn't mind meeting some of my online friends, but not just anyone. I would be sure to meet in a public place and that someone was either with me or knew where I was at all times. I would expect some phone/Skype conversations to be happening before a meet-up as well.

I've met all three of my best friends online. I knew them all about a year before I met them face to face. I dont even consider them online friends anymore though.

I met up with a small group of people I found in a fan forum for my favorite hockey team. They were really great! I wouldn't be opposed to meeting someone I found online as long as I had some time to get to know them.

I love meeting most people on the internet, but I do only meet my internet friends in social situations... at least the first couple of times 🙂 I have made many great friends on the internet, but it is easy to lie on the internet, so you know, better be safe than sorry!

I'm okay with the idea of meeting Internet people in real life, especially under circumstances like an organised meet-up. The Internet does attract plenty of crazies, and although I generally think it's best to be cautious, I also think that most people are going to be what they say they are, especially in communities focused on specialised interests like this one. I'm not exactly the most mega-proactive in contacting people, though. I once briefly met up with some people from a forum to attend this event at a con, but obviously it was short-lived.

On a side note, this topic reminds me that I used to frequent a forum run by a married couple, who met through that forum and eventually became its admins. It was actually pretty cute.

That sort of leads me on to my other point, which is that I can understand how meeting new friends online, online dating, etc. can be appealing in that you never have to feel guarded about having fandoms. If it's clear from the word go that you have that geeky side, then it's never going to a problem. I know people who gawk at the notion of going to a con, and I quite like meeting people in a space where I know that it isn't going to be an issue.

I'd be in favour of a BB meet-up, though, not least because I'd really love to talk to other people about Buffy in real life. Some people I know remain convinced that it's Lizzie McGuire goes kung-fu on dudes with bad make-up for seven seasons.

I've met up with loads of people from Twitter over the years. Mostly at festivals where it's a safe, public place and all that, but it's been great. I go to gigs and pubs with them sometimes which was great when I was being bullied at uni last year and needed someone to talk to.

I'm not great at speaking in person so sometimes it's awkward, but when you meet the right people and can talk to them the same irl as online it just boosts your confidence massively. I've got a group of friends that I tinychat with every now and then which is nice, especially as my rl friends have all got their own things going on at the minute.

The real test is going to be in September when I go to Bestival on my own and meet up with my Twitter friends. I'm a bit terrified at the prospect but hopefully it should be a laugh.

Wow, I love this. That is adorable! <3 I sqee for joy when Chi (my husband) and I get to do big Firefly-related things (like host Can't Stop the Serenity, for example) because it's us getting to be a part of what brought us together. <3

Hi-waitforit-larious! XD ...To be fair, one of the Potentials was a main character on Lizzie McGuire. 😛

Post Scriptum - I really wish they'd bring back Karma... because I feel like I'm spamming the crumdiddlies out of folks by responding only to tell them I agree or how funny I think something they said was...
