Meeting so-called Buffy fans "in the wild."

Those guys are the worst! 😀 My co-worker and I were talking about How I Met Your Mother and then we started talking about Willow.

Co-worker: She was so adorable in Buffy.
Me: You're a fan?
She: Yeah, it was a great show.
Me: Who did you like?
She: Angel of course. He was hot.
Me: My favorite is Xander.
She: He's hot, too. I loved how he ended up with Willow.
Me: ?????? You mean the clothes fluke?
She: Huh?
Me: When they cheated on Cordelia and Oz.
She: Cheated? No. Didn't they get married?
Me: Xander and Willow or Cordelia and Oz.
She: Xander and Willow.
Me: But, Willow's gay.
She: I know but after her girlfriend died.
Me: What fanfic were you reading? No. Willow is GAY!
She: Yeah, but she loves Xander.
Me: Okay. That's the bell. Time for class. No more Buffy talk. 😀

One of my best friends had started to watch Buffy a few years ago, soon after I'd watched it for the first time and I was thrilled. I was at her birthday party when I got talking to her boyfriend and it turned out that he was the massive fan and he was making her watch them all. So we talked about Buffy for ages. XD I love meeting real fans in "the wild". I wish I could convert more.

I managed to get two of my best friends onto Buffy and one of them onto Angel. But so far, my other two best friends just won't budge. I think they're thrown by the cheesy title and the cheesy premise like I was when I was a kid and had never seen Buffy before (I've tried to explain that it's meant to be a joke, but they just won't give anything I like a chance, even though we mostly love the same things). I think it's because I'm a bit obsessive and they get sick of it... But they just don't seem to understand that I'm never a fan of bad things. xD

I really wish to meet any Buffy fans "in the wild". In Poland BtVS was popular like in '98 and '99 so people in my age don't remember it so well.
Last week when I was in England and I saw my cousin (he's really into The Vampire Diaries) and he told me that he remember when he was watching Buffy after school. He's 26 now so...
My best friend knows about Buffy and stuff on the show only thanks to Wiki. 😀 She's also watched it 12 years ago.

I remember a conversation I had with a Buffy fan in college. We ended up disagreeing because she didn't watch Angel.

"You're a Buffy fan too! Great."
"Yeah, I loved the show. The finale was good. I was so sad when Spike died."
"Me too. He was my favorite character."
"Me too!"
"Well, at least he's on Angel now."
"What? No he's not, he died at the end of the finale. He burned up."
"Remember the amulet he was wearing? He somehow got stored in that and it was sent to Angel and he's a regular on that show now.
"No he's not."
"You do know about the Angel spin-off, right?"
"Yes, but Spike's not on it. I'd know that."
"He's been on it for months!"
"Spike's dead!"
"Well, sure he's dead since he's a vampire, but he's on Angel now."
"No he's not!"

I hope she eventually found out the truth. I just found it funny that I couldn't convince her that Spike was on Angel.

I am gonna stick to meeting Buffy fans at conventions and on here! 😛. Everyone my age who I have ever mentioned Buffy too (in the wild) have said that its stupid and it sucks ¬.¬. But tbh, that doesnt stop me bringing it up, its hard having something like a convention or the new comic coming up and not having anyone to talk to at school. So I always seem to bring it up, even with my friends dislike.

I have got a friend who loves dollhouse and Eliza Dushku, so I have half converted her but I doubt she will ever be a die-hard fan.

My best friends sisters best friend is a buffy fan. We had a conversation about dollhouse and joss whedon. Then she said that she had never watched angel... so that was another loss in the wild.

At least I have you guys to geek out with about buffy stuff now!!!

There are a few college kids in one of our Hapkido classes who watched the show, but they're not at the same level of fanaticism that we are here. They just think that it's an interesting show, and the martial arts in their fight scenes is laughable (it really is, but it's stage fighting. You're SUPPOSED to telegraph every movement so the audience can see it) but much beyond that, they lose interest completely. (Maybe if Buffy or Faith had worn one of those skin tight leather outfits like the girl in "The Matrix"...)

I've only been lucky enough to meet a couple Buffy fans "in the wild" and neither of them were as hardcore as me. They were the type to watch it once in a while, if they happened to catch it on TV, but when I invited them here they looked at me as if I'd grown another head.

OK, so on the parenting board I'm on, there are some other geeks there, mainly Dr. Who/Torchwood fans (& I finally sucumbed). Some of them are Buffy/Firefly fans too, although probably none to the level I am. They still enjoy when I post quotes on FB and stuff like that, although yeah, I think they would think I was kinda weird for hanging out here. 🙂 We're all moms, and some of them are my age.

I was also at the Buffy OMWF Sing-a-long at Comic Con, and I was really disappointed by some of the Buffy fans there. I didn't really talk to them one-on-one, but the jeers and the booing whenever Dawn came on screen were awful. I wanted to punch someone. The guy behind me seriously thought he was in MST3K or something and would not. shut. up. Fun fact- fans who complain really, really loudly and frequently about Dawn while everyone else is trying to enjoy the show? Are 10 times more annoying than Dawn could ever be.

That really sucks. 🙁 Was that this year? Because I thought I read that it was addressed beforehand, with the organizers saying that if it continues, they'll stop having the Sing-a-longs. And didn't Joss himself make a comment about it? I mean seriously, if the man asks you to stop, don't continue to offend him!

Oh, and my best fan experience was meeting 2 members of this board IRL, and finding out that my English professor cousin is a Buffy fan. We'll often make comments and quote stuff on FB. And raising the next generation of Buffy fans- now that's fun!! My 7 year old went to school last week saying "I love you so much I almost forgot to brood!!".

Oh yes, I've met a few in real life. One of them is awesome and is pretty much my fandom twin. The other I only met once (we were volunteering the same shift at the aquarium I work at) and she seemed cool, until she called Buffy a 'whore' and said she only liked Spike. And then she wasn't even aware of Angel's show. She was really surprised when I mentioned to her that Spike gets resurrected in Season 5 of Angel.

eta- oh yeah, and I've had good experiences converting two friends into Buffy fans! But I wouldn't really consider them people I found "in the wild". More like tame zoo-dwellers.

To me, being a fan means you accept all the characers as they are and realize that all of them contribute to the show and its storylines, so even if you don't like them, you should respect the characters.

However, that's just my opinion and I realize you can't stop people from behaving a certain way. But seriously, that is totally uncalled for and if Michelle was there I would have felt highly embarassed to even be part of a crowd who would do that.

Totally agreed. I remember someone in the audience even yelled out that Michelle/Dawn was ugly. Utterly ridiculous and offensive. I did not like being associated with that crowd at all.

Me: I love that episode! It's my favorite ever! Except my favorite character dies.

She thought that I was even more weird when I told her it was season 2, episode 17, "Passion". From memory.😀

I've heard of people doing that. While Dawn is one of my least favorite characters (right there with Spike) I would never "boo" her character. I thought MT did a wonderful job of making her so incredibly annoying. Though I don't like the character, I respect what the actress did with the roll.

I don't talk to most Buffy "fans" outside of here and the comic book store. I have one friend who's into the show, but I like the in-depth conversations I can get into discussing the characters like real people. (And she's a huge Spike fan and thinks he does no wrong, and you all know I don't like him so we clash there lol) The guy that owns my local comic book store calls me the "Magic Buffy" girl. Cause I only go there for magic cards and the Buffy comics. 😛 We've talked about Buffy in depth before. He's the only person I've met that doesn't wanna argue with me about things. It's great.

That is such a cute story! Since reading the Buffy comics I've explored all of the comic book stores in my area and have become loyal to one specific store & even have the entire season 9 and Angel & Faith issues reserved. It's a little smaller than some of the other bigger, flashier stores but the guy there is sooo nice to me & my kids & even gave me some free Star Wars stickers for my students. He's been in the community a long time & even runs an annual Star Trek convention (which encompasses all Sci-fi and last year had Jewel Staites and Armin Shimmerman, but I couldn't go). He has written some comics himself. I have no idea if he's a Buffy fan, he has never commented on it, but we talk about other common interests.

In my Writer's Craft class, my teacher was talking about how a lot of Horror stories take place in schools, and she said "Buffy The Vampire Slayer for example". That was literally all she said, but because of that, I gasped and smiled and got all excited, and grew more respect for her. 😛
