No it doesnt. The only thing that makes a film successful is butts in the seats. You can have a quality movie, but that is different than a successful one.

That wasn't my point and you know it. Take Ghostbusters or Back to the Future. At the time they were seem as fairly low budget films, and the reasons those films have sustained is because of the timeless characters and the great storytelling. I'm not disputing that buns on seats isn't what matters, sadly it is, I'm just saying the current system of re=producing older films and throwing money at everything is not sustainable.

I'm not sure how low budget those films really were, for back then. 30 million/19 million is still a good chunk of money.

I don't really think I was getting my back up just arguing my case.

Don't forget though that most of that 30 or 19 mill problay went on special effects. In this sense when you top up most of the rest of the costs it means they were still pretty cheap compared with today's films. But the point stands they were origanal concepts. There maybe other better examples such as The Breakfast Club or the Goonies?
 
There are many movies made for under 20 million still. Juno only cost 8 million. Bronson didn't EVEN cost a million. Garden State 2 million. Take Shelter 1 million.

Breakfast Club cost 8 million so when you factor in inflation it's 18 million.
Goonies cost 19 million, when you factor in inflation that would be 42 million today.
 
Well I would like to know what the £8 million went on in Breakfast Club because that film looks like it cost about 2 or 3 mil tops. Anyway the point stands the film mentioned were originally concept, and the filmmakers were given freedom to make the films they wanted to make, and that just doesn't happen often enough nowadays.

Also you mention the likes of Juno, Garden State and Take Shelter, but to me those are indie films, they might be the top end of the indie market, but they are still indie for me.
