I hope when the Buffy and Angel series slow down, rather than eliminating either, they just produce a single Buffyverse issue per month and follow whichever characters the author (and Joss) see fit. Thoughts?

yea, I dont really understand the rejection of Angel/Spike in season 8. They have already stated that they are allowed to use characters from each other. Its been a couple years of Season 8 comics and still they havn't crossed? What gives? Angel and Spike are such huge important people in Buffy's life, wether she has 'moved on' or not. I get that Joss is quick to play the 'audience dont always know what they want' card but I think its about time we find out some answers such as if Buffy even knows Spikes alive.

Dark Horse has the right to use the Angel characters, but bear in mind that it's Joss who's plotting the stories, and he's made both series canonical. Therefore, he's not going to let anything through in one comic that a) contradicts the other, or b) has spoilers for the other.
We won't see Angel, Spike, or any of those other characters in season 8, or get any report on their status even, at least until the AtF comic has been wrapped up.

I should imagine Joss wants to get the important stuff out of the way first. like the Hell-A storyline and Who is Twilight.

Another one was announced, it's just not named yet. Brian Lynch (AtF's co-producer) is already working on it I believe.

I agree that those two major plots will probably take precidence, but don't DC and Marvel have frequent crossovers between superheroes without fussing with continuity or hurting the arcs? (I don't read those, but I'm pretty sure)

The only new ones i'd heard of was Aftermath and Blood & Trenches
Aftermath doesn't have Joss's name on it, so I'm guessing he's free to ignore it when the time comes to use Spike and Angel in Buffy Season 8/9.
Oh, and a merge can't really happen, aside from the occasional crossover, 'cause of the different, competing companies.

With Aftermath, are you sure? I've been wondering that for a while. Kelley Armstrong initially said that ~'fans could forget about it if they thought it was subpar,' that led people to ask her if it was considered Buffyverse canon, and she said that it was. It's also picking up from After the Fall's numbering system. I wish there was confirmation one way or another, I probably won't even bother with it if Joss doesn't consider it canon.
^I just read up on it again. Unless Armstrong's lying (I don't know anything about her), it's canon. She says that future Angel stories from Joss will build from her arc.

I was under the impression that Angel: After the Fall, Spike: After the Fall and Aftermath were all basically considered part of the same canonical narrative.

I asked about Joss's involvement on her forum and got this reply:

Make what you will of that. Joss's name isn't on the cover, that's for sure.

As much as I'd love to see the two comics collide, I doubt it's gonna happen. For one thing, After the Fall and Buffy season 8 aren't owned by the same publishers, so there would be a lot to work out before they merge. Even if IDW and Dark Horse worked something out, season 8 and After the Fall are two of the highest-grossing comics out there today (beating out classic superhero comics and all that), so I doubt they'd willingly chop their income in half.

I was surprised to see that according to the copyright notices, the Buffy comic is owned by 20th Century Fox and Dark Horse, and Angel is Owned by Fox and IDW. Apparently Joss and Mutant Enemy own no part of them at all.
I thought Fox only owned the actual TV episodes and Mutant Enemy owned the characters. Guess I was wrong.
Does the media in which the characters appear affect licensing? That would be my only guess.
To the OP, I don't think I'd turn down a new title that was canon, that merged the worlds of Buffy and Angel. But it'd have to be canon. And I'm not seeing how Joss could do that right now, or even for a while. 'Course, I don't know what he has up his sleeve for Buffy Season 9, either, except that it's possibly set in the not present.
If it's Buffy, and Joss is writing, and it's canon, I'm pretty sure I'm on board.
I personally feel that the comics are being built up to intersect. There has been so many similarities. The issue of time travel and what is to come has been dealt with by both. Buffy going to Fray's world and seeing the changes in the world her actions incur and Illyria giving Angel the glimpse of what is to come. The time slips themselves are very suspect. Both shows using them at the one time? I have a theory that it is through a timeslip that Buffy and the gang find out about L.A. (just a theory though) Harmony I also found a strange addition to season 8, when we last saw her she was very much and Angel character and her arc in the comics, I think anyway, is creating a tangible link between both verses. The slayers in L.A. will surely have to be dealt with? Who is heading up the L.A. cell for instance? Also, that flash of Spike in the future with the Sycthe, that has to be somewhat meaningful.
Maybe this is all a fanwank on my part but I really feel like that both comics will cross paths if not merge as this thread suggests.

I've been back and forth with that idea, I still don't know but I think the fact that W&H took a sudden interest in Buffy at the end of Angel Season 4 is significant and that they wanted Sunnydale shut down. They must have known what would happen with the amulet.
I think they have plans for her yet.

Sure if Joss is still working on it. And they bring Faith back in, too. I wouldn't really mind if the two comics merged, but for now I prefer them as two sererate ones. (Mostly because I'm preferring the BtVS series right now.) But maybe in a few years.

Well yeah 😉.
With the Scythe, it seems to me like Spike's the one who kept it safe after the apocalypse since Buffy & Angel either died in the battle or of old age (I'd like to believe the latter). If we believe the time slips & visions, Angel's turned back into a vampire, but then he legitimately gets to "Shanshu" after wards (we seem him middle-aged in the future).
And David Fury confirmed that Joss intends Buffy to be the Slayer that's behind winning the current apocalypse.
It's not really verses' intersecting, it's the same universe, just separate teams. Personally, I'd like to think that W&H are involved with Twilight, but I doubt it, because Joss has said in the past that involving Buffy too heavily in Angel's battle would take away from the fact that Angel & his team have been fighting them for all these years.
