This thread is to see if anyone wants to discuss Merlin, the BBC show where ASH plays King Uther. This thread is directed at those posters in Britain who are current with series 4, and those posters who otherwise have the ability to be, and are, current with series 4.

Anyone who is not current with series 4 (now airing in Britain) and does not want to be spoiled, stop reading now! I've duly warned for the spoilers and won't be using that masking thing. I don't know how to do it anyway.

So, what did you think of Uther's death? Were you sad? Did you expect it? Wasn't it necessary to move the story along? I'll be sorry to see ASH no longer in the show (very sorry), but I loved that he died heroically, giving his life to save his son's life. He would never have done anything less for the son he so clearly loved, as he once said, "more than my own life." So I was satisfied.

But I was also curious. Why did he hesitate in dispatching the Gleemaster, even after the Gleemaster conspicuously glanced down at the knife hidden in his trousers? Was it just a fatal mistake, or was Uther yielding to a death wish caused by Morgana's betrayal?

I've been meaning to catch up with this show. I watched the first season and really enjoyed it.

ASH was awesome in it. For sure.

I read the spoiler and it makes me really want to keep watching it to see how that all comes about! Very interesting.

I wasn't sad to see Uther die to be honest. Not at all but I'll miss Anthony. Since his new show crashed and burned he needs to find another project. He did die in a good way at least.

I can be very shallow and it's the case with this show, Morgana/Katie McGrath is a big reason I watch, although not just her. Too often Morgana seem too one dimensional and I hope that changes.

I remember not being fond of Arthur in the first episode but as expected he's grown a lot. Necessary and what'll happen now will be even more interesting.

I don't know how to do it anyway.

You've mentioned spoiler in the thread title so it shouldn't have to be used in the thread but maybe you'll need it in the future.

Without the spaces obviously.

Thank you! And Morgana / Katie is really lovely.
It made me sad when Uther died. because I was hoping ASH would be on the show a little bit longer.

I LOVE MERLIN!!!

So glad there is a thread now to discuss every week! haaa

I think this series is shaping up to be the best yet! I love evil Morganna, she just gets hotter and hotter 😛

Thought it was a great episode - it really surprised and shocked me completely, because
I really didnt think/know they were killing Uther off, I just thought it would be another "oh they'll find the cure in the nick of time"! This is a huge moment in the series, Arthur is king now - and his connection between magic and the death of both his parents will be fundamental in how he perceives magic in general! Will he turn into Uther? And how long before Gwen is going to be queen?? haaa

🙂

I don't usually do spoilers for shows I watch, but when I catch wind of the possible death of a favorite character I start chasing down spoilers like mad. I've known since last spring that Uther would probably die - people on the set reported hearing Arthur referred to as "King," and there was absolutely no word of Anthony on set after the first few weeks.

Then about three weeks ago for some odd reason the official Merlin people released a promo still for ep 3, showing Arthur gazing sadly at Uther lying dead on his funeral bier. So they didn't even try to keep it secret. Last week (before the ep aired), a British entertainment mag published an interview with Morgana about how she helped hasten Uther's death. So it's really been out there for anyone who wanted to look. 🙂

Also, this series is about the Knights -- and Uther would never have allowed most of them to even be knights. So he had to go.

Unfortunately. I will really miss seeing Anthony.

Here, if you're interested, is the script for that episode. It's interesting to see what was cut out in filming:

I hated Uther's death. I really enjoy Merlin, but it's a guilty pleasure, it's no masterpiece. And I almost couldn't watch season 3 for Morgana's infuriating smirking all the time. I loved her in the first two seasons. But she was so badly written in season 3 it was a disgrace. Uther was written ok. I really enjoyed some of his character, but not all.

But his death was ridiculous. He was barely used in season 3. I think he should have lasted longer. Maybe done something other than stare out the bloody window a couple of times over two episodes before just dying. And the fact they released a pic of it beforehand just shows how little they cared about his character. It could have been much better.

Seriously though, they could have done so much with this show, particularly Uther and Morgana's characters, but they screwed them up big time.

Haaa I know what you mean so much!!! Haaa but I think she's great in this series now she has fully embraced her dark side - though maybe I'm just deceived by how hot she looks!!!

Hmmm...I'm guessing you're deceived, since she's barely even done anything so far this season. ;)
I read the spoilers, so I knew it would happen. So I wasn't surprised he was killed, I was surprised he was killed so soon, and I'm beginning to think it might have been a little too soon. because to be honest, to me Merlin's was a bit boring the last time around. You know what will happen: big fight, Arthur will win, Merlin's secret won't be discovered....Uther always brought a little extra to the show and now that's missing🙁

I actually started watching Merlin before I started watching BtvS, and while watching Merlin, I didn't really like Uther. Also, the character never really stood out to me, so I never really gave him or the actor behind him much thought. While watching BtvS, I really started to like ASH as an actor and then I remembered that he also had a role in Merlin. I still don't really like Uther as a character, but I have become a fan of ASH.
As for Uther's dead, I felt more sad for Arthur about the fact that he had lost his father, than I was sad about Uther not being there anymore. I never really cared for Uther. It's a shame that ASH won't be in the show anymore though.
