Hey! I know there's a thread about the episode itself, but there should be one where we can discuss about all the hidden meanings through it.

I've watched this episode countless times trying to figure out as much as I could. Just list any you noticed and throw in an explanation 😛

At my communication school, we had (first semester) a class called "Psyco-social archetypes" and we were doing "mythanalyses" where we analysed the archetypes hidden in Twilight and the Lord of the Ring, and also the Three little pigs! :biggrin3:
I thought it would be funny to try to mythanalyse Restless but I didn't managed to :dramaqueen:

I just can say that it's all about the characters'subconscient, obviously :biggrin3:

Xander's basement is a metaphor (a metonymy actually) for Xander's unprogress in life. He keeps on falling down there when he tries to reach the others, who are...further in life than he is.

And huuuuh...I'm pretty braindead now so I can't think of any other example :biggrin3:
 
There's one thing I've always wondered about Restless, so I'll just ask it here. In Xander's dream, what does Anya say when she's speaking in French?

I love the episode! I've read about it on Wiki where are some quotes of Joss who explains secret meanings of Scoobies' dreams.
For example, Willow's dream is the most interesting, in my opinion. All of the people were telling to her that she has a costume on her, but she's looked normal, right? Then in the class we can see her with long hair and dress, straight from season one. It shows that new look of Willow is only an outfit, that she's still that shy, nerd-y girl from high school for some people.

By the way, I like the scene in the park, with Giles and Spike. Giles says "Spike would be the perfect watcher" or something like that. It always makes me laugh.
 
All that sticks in my head is Joss' comentary on the episode when he says that he was copying the red curtains from Twin Peaks (the black lodge), but that they were representative of the womb (or, actually, the part leading to it). I was just like, huh?
 
Love, love, love this episode.

The only thing that I remember about the commentary is that Joss said that the cheese guy didn't mean anything at all and he basically just wanted to see what people would come up with. To explain that guy.

I think Giles' dream is the easiest to interpret since it's mostly about how much he's given up in order to raise Buffy. As both a woman and as the slayer.
 
I like the differences in the way men and women tend to think... In willow's dream willow and tara are talking about not knowing their kitty's name and tara says, "she'll tell us"

then in buffy's dream riley and adam are talking about being very busy, "filing and naming things"...

I think that's cool.

Sorry to go off-topic for a second, but damn I always get confused by Tiger's and your avi! Whenever you post after each other, I think it's the same person. And the awesome part is that it's the same scene, just a different frame, hahaha! 😀

I know the cheese man doesn't mean anything, but I want to know how they came up with that. I mean a guy that wears cheese is a very strange thing.

I love Willow's dream, with her wearing a costume that everyone can see but her. It definitely shows her insecurites and the fear that everyone but her knows who she really is.
