Military Coup In Turkey

So Erdogan is out of the country and the military is currently staging a coup. While Erdogan is looking for Asylum in every damn country he asked his followers to confront the military. It has now turned into a bloody massacre. I would love to know which part of the military is staging this coup. Hope it's not the really fascist section.

But the crazyness that is 2016 continues...
 
Considering the country and what religion the country has been connected with for the last millennia or two, the fascist section of the army does should not even enter the equation. The country used to be run by Muslims.
Unfortunately the only media reports I have seen so far say about the coup taking place it says nothing about the intent of those who doing the coup.
 
It looks to most people more and more like a false flag operation on Erdogan's part. The military in this coup seems to be the secular faction (more democracy less religion, less Islam by fighting ISIS). The fight looks to be as good as over. But how it went is making it look like false flag. That army was so greatly organized they took control over everything quick. Yet they sucked at taking out the heads of government. Erdogan was already on a plane and then told civilians to protest what's happening. Several other high ranking politicians managed to flee. They bombed the parliament with barely any damage. And now soldiers are being arrested by police (how on earth). Guess we will know once the dust settles. Either way bad day for Turkey because after this it's good buy to the secular faction. Full blown islamic state.
 
The BBC are reporting that the coup is over, but with at least 90 dead. Has there ever been a 'good' military coup? One that lead to more democracy?

It depends on where it happens. If North Korea has a military coup I'll probably support it.

Military coup happened many times in Turkey before. It defended the secularization of the country from the civil government. But this time it's much more complicated than that and can't be simply seen as "military=secular faction, government=islam faction".
 
I'm against it. Clearly the Turkey public is against it. People were the ones who fought off the military. They want democracy? Elect another president. Don't go off killing innocents.

I believe Turkey is still a democracy in that there are several opposition parties. On a personal level I am no fan of Erdogan and all he stands for, but he was elected by a majority of the Turkish people. There are of course many issues with Turkish politics, not least that they are a memebr of NATO and I'm not sure what happens if a coup takes place in a NATO country ??
 
Oh Erdogan, it was an almost perfect movie. So perfect it should have been nominated for an Oscar next year. And then you choked in the Epilogue. Damn man. All you had to do was wait a few more days. Idiot.

Not quite. He pushed for repeat elections (because he didn't have majority) while murdering the opposition until he got the majority pretty much by force. It also helped that he increased the amount of islamic people in Turkey during that time. Those people would vote for him. Since then it hasn't been a democracy but dictatorship. Basic rights, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, judges who oppose his laws. On and on it goes and he got rid of that. This false flag coup last night was just so he could get rid of the last smidgen of the democracy. Brilliant, really.

I'm pretty sure both NATO and EU are not allowed to vocally endorse a coup against democratically elected governments. IMO Turkey should be kicked out of NATO asap, because only an idiot would now think this was a legitimate coup attempt.

Poor Atatürk. All that work to make Turkey a democratic country is now being undone by this islamic dictator.

I wouldn't say idiot, but it doesn't seem much like a legitimate coup attempt, I agree. A lot of things seem off about it. If it was legitimate it sure wasn't all that well planned/enough conviction behind it.

Erdogan is cracking down down on everyone he can. This is bad news. The military in Turkey traditionally restrains the more fundamentalist elements in the country.

NATO won't do anything because of it's obsession with Russia. It wants Turkey on side regardless of what it does. I wonder if the Kurds will face fallout from this

It's also not the first time Erdogan has gone after the army.

Less than 12 hours after the coup. 2.700 judges and I think 3 thousand in army positions. So much for democracy. I didn't see any judges in the streets last night. And why would they be involved in a military coup anyway? What a massive cleansing of the democratic powers in Turkey. And to see the leaders of the West and the EU applaud this whole thing as a win for democracy. I can't believe what is happening these last few years.

Those poor soldiers btw who didn't even know it was supposedly a coup. They thought they were there for a drill exercise, which explains why they didn't shoot at civilians and easily gave themselves up (they had automated weapons and tanks for crying out loud) to the police. And then they had their throats slit by their superiors (which there is video material of btw) on top of it.

Btw Erdogan is President. That makes him the excecutive power. He has no say whatsover about the jurisdictional part. Yet he can remove almost 3k judges from their positions? That's not democracy. And to see the west applaud this. I feel stupider the more this kind of crap happens.
 
the coup was definitely directed by Erdogan. He must have had the purge list prepared long before that, otherwise how could he come up with the list of more than 2,000 names within a day?
