Farenheit 451 anyone?
No no no no no censorship. No ratings. If I haven't read it/watched it first, or at least got an honest opinion from someone who has, my kid isn't watching it. My mom never censored anything I read. If there was an issue, we discussed the issue. She never sidestepped anything, be it sex, drugs, violence, etc. I'm with blondie in that if I was made to read from what was "age appropriate" when I was a kid, I would have been bored to tears. I had quite literally read most every book in my school library by the time I was 9. I read books like uncle tom's cabin when I was in third to fourth grade. I read steven king, vc andrews, and hundreds of babysitters club/nancy drew/boxcar kids etc etc etc. I read and still do read everything. And if I didn't have the freedom to read everything when I was younger, I wouldn't have such an affinity for books now. I watched kids movies right alongside pg13 and r rated movies, and we always talked about them and what was going on instead of pretending issues didn't exist, and that is one of the things about my childhood i value most, and something I try to do with my own son. No he's not watching nightmare on elm street at the age of four, or anything like that. Bit I'm not going to hide him from the world. If he has a question, it gets answered. It's in an age appropriate format, and in a way he can understand, but there's no deception when it comes to my kids asking questions.
On a side note, it is hard to do this as a parent. About six months ago, the tv was on, and svu or something lame like that came on. Something that's supposed to be ok on tv, right? Well it dealt with rape and children, and as I was not paying attention, my 10 year old step son saw some of it and asked me what rape was. I think that was about one of the hardest conversations to have but I think it's important to explain instead of just saying "oh ignore that" or "i'll tell you when you are older."
