It's popular here in Sweden, we even make books about how wrong we've been when it comes to singing along with songs. We can't be the only ones right? Share your mistakes.

The first three that comes to mind.

Johnny Cash - Hurt I always wondered why he sings about his swedish friend so one time I checked out the lyrics to find out why. I was so disappointed to realise that he was singing "My sweetest friend" instead. Still hear it as swedish friend whenever I hear the song but at least I'm aware that I'm wrong.

The Pussycat dolls - When I grow up
I thought they wanted to have boobies when they grew up. Made a lot of sense to me. But when searching the lyrics it said that they wanted groupies instead. Ok, made sense too since they wanted to be famous. Made me wonder what age they were refering to in the song since I didn't want to think that young kids thinks about groupies. A little more searching and I find that some lyric pages actually say boobies so now I'm unsure which one it is. One thing is sure though, I'm either right or at least I'm not alone in hearing it wrong.

Skye Sweetnam - Babydoll Gone Wrong
A very far fetched one but none the less true. When I was watching a lot of Legend of the seeker I heard Darken Rahl being sung in a Skye Sweetnam song. I was sure I missheard but had to check out to be sure. And obviously it was wrong. And not a little. It was "doll gone wrong". She sings (Baby) doooll gone wroooooooooong which I turned into Daaarken Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaahl. Don't you just love my mind? 😉

To my swedish friends. Teddybjörnen Fredriksson, Jansson hette han. Not my own but I love it.

There is a song by Pearl Jam called Yellow Ledbetter. I could never figure out what he was saying and I made the mistake of watching this video before I looked up the real lyrics.

The video is someone's interpretation of what the lyrics sound like to them. They are totally inaccurate but hilarious since some of them really DO sound like that's what he's saying.

Now EVERY TIME I hear the song, I sing along with these lyrics instead of the real ones.

The real lyrics, incidentally, are:

Unsealed, on a porch a letter sat
Then you said, "I wanna leave it again"
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave her again

On a weekend I wanna wish it all away, yeah
And they called and I said that I'll go
And I said that I'll call out again
And the reason I ought ta leave her calm, I know
I said, "I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag"

Oh yeah, can you see them, out on the porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
I see them 'round the front way, yeah
And I know, and I know I don't wanna stay

Make me cry

I see oh, I don't know why there's something else
I want to, wanna drum it all away
I said, "I don't, I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag"

Oh yeah, can you see them, out the on porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
I see them 'round the front way
And I know, and I know I don't want to stay at all
I don't want to stay
I don't want to stay
I don't want to stay
I don't, I don't want to stay

Blinded by the light
What I hear: "Blinded by the light, rub up on doochie, just a roamer of the night."
What is said: "Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night"

Playing God - Paramore

I thought the last line of Picture to Burn by Taylor Swift was "Let it burn" for the longest time, until I looked it up and found out it's "baby burn." I still sing "let it burn" because second to the "I'll tell mine you're gay" line, that's my favorite line in the released version, and in the radio edit/"censored" version, that's my favorite line... as "let it burn." So...

I'm with you, [mention]Washburn[\mention] on the boobies thing... I totally thought that's what the pussy cat dolls were singing!

Someone once told me Fall Out Boy's "This Aint A Scene, It's An Arms Race" lyrics sounded like "it's a god damn arse race" instead of "it's a god damn arms race". And so ever since then that's all I can hear.

In my defence of this one I was young

Jordan Sparks - Battlefield

What I hear: "Better go and get your Moma."

What is actually said: "Better go and get your armour."

Blinded by the light
What I hear: "Blinded by the light, rub up on doochie, just a roamer of the night."
What is said: "Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night"

Nobody gets these lyrics right LOL!!! I don't even know what the real lyrics mean. 🙂

I can't think of any myself, but I'll let you in on my kids' interpretations of lyrics. Their favorite song currently is:

The 4 year old sings "hidden in the stars", and instead of "message to the main, oh!", the 7 year old sings "message to the mango". I'm not kidding! I also ROFL when he does that and now it's a big family joke.

For years, I was convinced that the words to ABBA's "Take a chance on me" were something completely different.

Real lyrics: "Honey I'm still free. Take a chance on me."
What I heard up until I was 16: "Olly oxen free. Take a chance on me."

Yeah. Also, that Fall Out Boy song, "Sugar we're going down."

Real Lyrics: "We're going down, down, in an earlier round. And sugar we're going down swinging."
I heard: "We're going down, down, in a lulelurah. And sugar we're going down swinging."

I don't even know what a lulelurah would be. Some sort of mythical creature? A boat made of candy?

I think in that case, though, it was more bad enunciation on the singer's part than my own failed hearing because a lot of people tell me they also had _no_ idea what the hell was being sung.

olly oxen free... that's cute!
"She's got a chicken to ride, and it's in my hair!" I used to scream along instead of, "She's got a ticket to ride, and she don't care." (Ticket to Ride by the Beatles.)

My person always gets lyrics wrong. I'm always teaching the right lyrics.

Bad Romance- Lady Gaga
Real: "Want your bad romance."
What I thought: "Wah-Jah-Bah-ROOOOMANCE!"

I never understood what she was saying.
I can never understand her or Rhianna in their songs.

On The Floor- J LO
Real:"Tonight we gon' be it on the floor."
What I thought:"Tonight we get HIP on the floor."

Stan - Eminem

I hear: "My tears don't call, I'm wondering why I got out of bed at all."
Actual Lyricas: "My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why I got out of bed at all."

And now i'm gonna ruin this song for everyone here....i can't hear anything except this now when I hear this song thanks to my friend always singing it this way....

Tom petty's "free falling"

Real lyrics: And i'm free! Free falling!

What I hear (and sing): And i'm free! Free balling!

In my early teens, I practically learned lots of my English from US cartoons, including Jem (if you don't remember that one, you're seriously missing out, one of THE best 80s cartoons about two (later on, three) rivaling rockbands, with lots and lots of original written music) - and some lyrics from that show I really messed up in my mind...

Out Of My Way: "I've got what it takes, and I'm on the attack" => "I've got what it takes in a mummy attack" (So glad to hear Pizzazz can handle ancient undead Egyptians! 😀)

She's Got The Power: "Like a prism bending light" => "Like a prison and a light" (Interesting metaphor, wonder what it's supposed to mean...)

Jam All Night Long: "If you're strumming the music's beat" => "In your stomach, the meal's explete" :lmao:

A boy i work with was working next to me the other day and starts to sing "everyyy road has its tolllll"

I just started dyinnnng laughing and he was like what? I was like are you serious right now? He says yeah I have that freakin song stuck in my head it plays on the radio ten times a day.

I said Ryan, its "every rose has its thorn".............................

In the song "Apologize" by One Republic I used to think it said "It's too late to call the judge," when it was supposed to be "It's too late to apologize." lol There's more that I can't think of right now...

I'm assuming everyone did the one of the song Superman by Five For Fighting

Misheard: blue cheese
Actual: red sheet

I heard "I'm only a man with his yummy blue cheese" the actual line is "I'm only a man in a silly red sheet." My sister heard "I'm only a man and I like blue cheese" mom also heard "blue cheese" so since it's my whole family, I'm going to assume others heard that too... haha
