I hate being here. I hate that you
have to be here. I hate that there's
evil, that it's growing, and I hate
that I was chosen to fight it.
I wish, a whole lot of the time, that
I hadn't been.
(smiling wryly)
I know a lot of you wish I hadn't
been either.

But this isn't about wishes. This is
about choices. I never had one. I
was chosen. And I accept that. I'm
not asking you to accept anything.
I'm asking you to make your own
choice. I believe we can beat this
evil -- not when it comes, not after
its army is ready, but now. Tomorrow
morning I'm opening the Seal. I'm
going down into the Hellmouth and I'm
going to finish it once and for all.

I've got strong allies: warriors,
charms, sorcerers, and I'll need them
all. But I'll also need you. Every
single one of you. So now you're
asking yourself, "What makes this
different? What makes us anything more
than a bunch of girls getting picked
off one by one?" It's true none
of you has the power Faith and
I have. I think both of us would
have to die for a new Slayer to be
called, and we can't even be sure
that girl is in this room. That's
the rule.
So here's the part where
you make a choice.

I forget that Buffy's resurrection mucked up the Slayer mojo. After reading the original script for Chosen, I found the bold pieces and couldn't believe my eyes. So, Buffy and Faith would both have to die for the next Slayer to be called. I'm guessing that's would be just to get the Slayer line back on its original track: to only have one Slayer per generation like it use to be before Buffy changed the rule.

Comments? Or other views on this?

Nice find!
well wouldn't Dawn have to die too, with the whole 'Dawn is Buffy' thing?
Doesn't the line not run through Buffy anymore?

I was under the impression that the line now ran through Faith rather than Buffy. Buffy died, Kendra was called and was technically the slayer, then she died and Faith was called. The premise through most of the series was taht technically if Faith dies the next slayer would be called, regardless of whether Buffy lived or died. I guess maybe that was why that line was left out, since it's different from what they've said throughout the series?

I suppose that could fit with the theory that Willow re-routed the line through Buffy in Bargaining. Beljoxa's Eye said that The First could only act in Season 7 because of a fundamental shift in the slayer mojo, right? That could have been the splitting of the line into two, rather than just Buffy's seizing it back. It might also explain why Willow was able to split it further in Chosen - it was already fragmented.

More importantly....it might have been originally intended to point towards a possible solution to the S7-many > Fray-One slayer problem. Will all the slayers be wiped out in the final apocalypse? It's an interesting little piece of dialogue, and I wish they'd defined the whole thing properly in canon.

Interesting theory about the split line
Buffy and Faith would both have to die for the next Slayer to be called. I'm guessing that's would be just to get the Slayer line back on its original track: to only have one Slayer per generation like it use to be before Buffy changed the rule.

The way I look at it - that's a given. Buffy died (briefly) in S-1. That VERY MOMENT, Kendra was called. But Buffy was "resurrected" by Xander. So now there's two slayers.

If Buffy died again - Kendra would still be a slayer - so another would not be called at that time. But Kendra was killed by Drusilla. Then Faith was called.

When Buffy died at the end of S-5, another slayer was not called. Because Faith was still alive & she was "the" slayer. So even if Buffy had been killed in S-7, Faith was still "the" slayer as well, so another wouldn't have been called. Therefore, Faith would have to die for another slayer to be called.

I've always liked that little "twist" in the series. I thought it was brilliant. 😀

The difference here though is that Buffy is saying both would have to die, not just Faith. If you subscribe to the theory that Faith was the active slayer in S7, then why would Buffy's death make a difference? Of course, Buffy is no authority on things like this.

Well yeah. Which is probably why that particular LINE was edited out of that speech. Because as it was (i.e. what was shown; what the audience saw) is that if that were the case, then another slayer would have been called when she died at S-5 end - but it didn't happen, because Faith was still alive. And we already know that Buffy had died once before, and Kendra was called. Then Kendra died, even tho Buffy was STILL alive, and Faith was called.

See? Brilliant! :lmao:

But even after dying twice, it shows that the Slayer, Buffy in this case, still retains her powers. Those continuing the legacy through her and Faith in my opinion. I'm with you on the fact that the Slayer line is suppose to run through Faith, but Buffy's second resurrection caused some cosmic shift in that, which might have brought it back through her as well. There were several moments in S-3 and S-7, that stated Buffy's death might cause the activation of a new Slayer. She said it herself in Potential and the Mayor also said it.

And the link for those wanna know...is buffyworld.com, its the site where all of the episode scripts are posted. There are two types the transcript (which is the exact dialogue from that episode) and then its the shooting script (which is the original dialogue for the episode for cuts and edits). So you would find it there.

Precisely. I had written a nice long post about this with quotes from Beljoxa's Eye referencing the recent shift in the slayer power...but my computer crashed before I could post, and I was so annoyed I just left it. The Slayer line did run through Faith, but Buffy seems to think differently in S7, and no-body wants to contradict her. This could help explain the discrepancy - the writers did have some kind of theory in mind, but had to cut it.

I would have assumed the reason it was cut is because it's incorrect...because I thought it was pretty much a given that it was just Faith passing it on now.
But I guess BtVS has never really explained exactly how the whole thing works.

That would have been pretty stupid for Buffy to ponder aloud. She didn't die at the end of Season Two, did she? Only Kendra did, and yet another Slayer was called. So no, Buffy was wrong.

I don't consider Buffy to be wrong. It was the "dying" & the coming back to life.

In S-1, when Xander gave Buffy CPR, she lived. That's a "human rule" - the human way.

In S-6, Willow brought Buffy back WITH MAGIC. I think that explains why the slayer line was altered. Boljox's eye (sp.) said it was because the slayer lives, not because she died. Buffy died a slayer's death. She died basically to save the world; she died for Dawn. She committed suicide. You don't just come back from that.

So I surmise that it was the WAY she came back, not just that she "came back" that makes the difference.

I don't consider Buffy to be wrong.
But, in regards to that bolded line, Buffy IS wrong.

At the end of Season 2, Kendra dies, and Faith is called. Buffy didn't die at the end of Season 2. So therefore, both Slayers do NOT need to die in order for another to be called. Whether or not Buffy's second death made a difference, whether or not a third death could bring about another Slayer doesn't matter. If Faith dies, all by herself, another Slayer will be called because that is how it worked for Kendra.

And I get your theory, about a human vs. magic bringing Buffy back. However, her first death was definitely a "Slayer's death" too. A vampire killed her. I mean, you don't get a more Slayery-death than that.

I agree with the:

S1: One Active Slayer
S2-5: One Active Slayer, One Inactive Slayer
S6-7 Two Active Slayers (f*** up The First took advantage off)

Yeah, but haven't you noticed what they think in the show tends to be right 100 percent of the time.

Buffy thought Angel was human early S1

Spike & Angel thought Buffy was in Rome

Buffy thinks Spike is dead (or she did for a while)

Giles thought Angel was evil again in AS5

Xander thought Willow was straight

Wes thought his father visited him in LA

Giles thought Jenny was an average Pagan

Cordy thought Doyle was pure human

That wasn't the point... buffy has to die in order for the line to be kept, as long as she LIVES their are two slayers and that dirupts the balance I believe. Making the line not its supposed to be, which is why I think so much shit has happened. I think that was one of those points that wasn't mentioned. Thing's have to be a certain way or its all out fo balance but thats my opinioin.::huh1::
