Missing Slayer

Okay, something I've always wondered about this season is the question of why another slayer didn't come onto the show? After Buffy died the first time, we had Kendra, and then Faith came along. Buffy died again at the end of season five, and while she didn't die a 'human' death, and was able to come back...she still died. Why has a new slayer not come into the picture? I mean, even if she didn't in season six, why not in season seven? When the world was about to come apart and they could have used all the help they could get?

Or am I really missing something?

I figured a slayer who dies gets replaced once. She got replaced by Kendra (who got replaced by Faith). So if Faith died, there'd be a new slayer. But Buffy already died, so no new Slayer. It's also possible that another potential became a slayer but somewhere else in the world, and we just never heard about her. That seems kind of unlikely though.

Well Faith is still the Slayer, the one that came after Buffy. Buffy died, came Kendra, Kendra died, came Faith, Buffy died again but Faith is still alive, so another Slayer can't be activated.

Because Buffy wasn't the 'active' Slayer, Faith was.

After Buffy's death in 'Prophecy Girl' in S1, and subsquently, her resurrection, she was no longer THE Slayer. When the Slayer dies, the power of the Slayer is activated in the next girl to Potentially hold the power. Buffy activated Kendra, so, technically, she'd done her part. The power is only supposed to get passed from one girl once, so once Buffy passed the mantel to Kendra, that was it.

Buffy might still have the power of the Slayer, but she was no longer THE Slayer, she was A Slayer. Kendra, and later Faith, became THE Slayer, so at the time of 'The Gift' it was Faith's death that would have activated the next Slayer.

However, after Buffy's resurrection in 'Bargaining' many believe this caused a flux in the Slayer-line, slotting Buffy back in, meaning that either Buffy OR Faith's death would have activated a new Slayer from S6 on, or that Buffy and Faith's deaths would have each activated a new Slayer, causing two Slayer-lines. But there's no way to know for sure, as all the Potentials were activated at the end of 'Chosen.'

Great post!
I agree with all the people that posted here. In the slayer line, Buffy was still considered dead. Faith was the active one.

I think it would have be awesome if there one day was a mini series about the slayer who was chosen for 147 days, before having her power ripped from her and put back into Buffy(maybe she would still have the power after Buffy came back, but I think her having her powers removed would make a better story). It's likely that won't happen, because it might not be profitable, but I would love to read/write that fanfic (but since I would probably Mary Sue it, it would suck).

I imagine that girl would still be supernatural, but physically weak, maybe even ill and/or dying. Maybe she would still have the slayer visions, and try to save people.

I don't think it's likely that Buffy dying a second time made a new slayer tough. But there's potential for a story there. Perhaps she would count as the last slayer who was chosen, and will fight in the Fraypocalypse?

Man, I wish I could write long fanfics...

It's been pretty much agreed upon and settled, and of course Joss has affirmed it anyhow, that the Slayer line went through Buffy to Kendra, then Kendra to Faith. Buffy retained her powers, and continued with what she and Giles considered her duty after she was revived from the Master's bite and drowning in the pool, but she really wasn't THE Slayer anymore, she was just someone who had Slayer powers and performed the Slayer's duties.

I always thought that it would have been an interesting story, nonetheless, if there had actually been a "Lost Slayer," a girl who suddenly developed Slayer Powers without having any idea in the world just who or what she was, or what those weird creatures were who kept trying to kill her. Maybe she could hook up with a group of freelance demon fighters like Gunn and his crew, or a "Rogue Demon Hunter" like Wes. There's real potential there.

Huh. Okay, never thought of all that XD

Although, I agree that I think it would be cool for there to some kind of spin-off, although I feel like any attempt to revive the Buffyverse might ultimately end badly. Might as well leave it as the awesome thing it was. It makes sense that the line would only pass on once, though it still leaves me with questions as to why Buffy would be able to do certain things. Like, if she wasn't THE slayer anymore, why would the original slayer seek her in dreams instead of Faith? Technically, since the slayer line was passed on, it's supposed to be Faith's job to protect the world, and if that was the case then she should be the one having visions and being visited in dreams by the original slayer, right? Plus if she wasn't THE slayer anymore, how could she have activated the emergency kit passed on from Nikki Wood? It just makes me wonder how she can be THE slayer in some circumstances and not THE slayer in others.

And btw, thank you to all who like my banner XD I love making graphics 😀

I guess that she could do certain things because she's A slayer. I bet any of the 1800 slayers could also activate the emergency kit. Why ask "Why can Buffy do certain things but not others" when the question "Why shouldn't she" is just as valid? There's no rule saying only one can do all.

I'm not sure which dreams you're talking about tough. I can only remember the original slayer visting Buffy once in her dreams, in Restless, because Buffy and the others had drawn her to them.

I think the other visions Buffy gets, she gets because she needs them. Maybe there's a force, feeling that although Faith exists, Buffy could do the job. Maybe Faith got dreams Buffy never had, to do her own work.

Huh.

I don't know about that. "Star Trek" produced both sequels on the large screen and spinoffs on television, and each one lasted as long or longer than the original's 3 seasons. Even the latest version, which committed the blasphemy of re-casting the original characters, has done quite well. With the sudden renewed interest in vampires as romantic figures, a spinoff Vampire Slayer series or movie based on the original series has the potential of doing quite well if the quality is there. I seriously doubt that the original stars of either show would be either available or particularly eager to reprise their roles, Marsters being a possible exception, but that only leaves the door open for a whole generation of new Slayers, vampires in search of redemption, and rogue demon fighters.

I shuddered when I read "vampires in search of redemption". No more, two was enough.

sadly, JM might be the most willing, but the least fitting... IMO he's the Buffy regular who's most visibly aged in the meantime.

Because Buffy and the gang harnessed the power of the first Slayer to defeat Adam, so she was made aware that they were the ones doing it and that's why she attacked them.

Plus if she wasn't THE slayer anymore, how could she have activated the emergency kit passed on from Nikki Wood? It just makes me wonder how she can be THE slayer in some circumstances and not THE slayer in others.
As Skytte has pointed out, most likely all that was required to activate the Emergency Kit was the power of the Slayer, didn't matter if there was more than one. As Skytte said, the S8 Slayers could probably activate it too.

Another theory for the Emergency Kit is that, at the time of that episode, Buffy's resurrection had slotted her back into the Slayer line, making her THE Slayer again, or at least one of THE Slayers.

There's also nothing to suggest, or deny for that matter, that Faith DIDN'T get visions, we were just never privy to them. This was BUFFY, the Vampire Slayer, not Faith, so obviously it was Buffy, and her dreams, who were the focus of the series, not Faith. Although, the dreams in 'Graduation Day Part 2' and 'This Year's Girl' suggest that Faith at least had some prophetic dreams, ones concerning Buffy at least.

Just out of curiosity, did Faith mention something about dreams in Season 7? I might be imagining it, but I think she mentioned dreams about potentials to Buffy.
