Deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been killed, interim Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril told reporters in Tripoli on Thursday. There are conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances of his killing, which reportedly happened in or near Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte on Thursday. Libya's ambassador to the United Kingdom says that Gadhafi's body is in Misrata, Libya.

The pictures are awful, I have no idea how I feel about this. Glad hes dead but there seems to have been quite a lot of brutality and now he'll never face his crimes.

The pictures are awful, wish they hadn't plastered it everywhere. I don't think he should have been killed as he should have been brought to justice properly, but it will be interesting to see what happens next for the people of Libya. This is only the beginning for them.

Can anyone tell me why it's okay to show footage of Gadhafi's death but not bin Laden's? No, seriously. Can anyone tell me why? I want to know.

He helped arm the IRA, who came within a few minutes and a couple of hundred yards of blowing up my aunt, so I won't be too upset but I do think that it's left certain politicians who helped to rehabilitate his regime in the last ten years with serious egg on their faces because we were supposed to forget that he was still a dictator who was loathed by his people.

As regards showing his body, I'd guess that because he was killed by Libyans (as far as we know), the pictures went straight onto the internet before anybody had a chance to control the flow of information- it's not as if the US authorities had any way of managing that situation because they weren't directly involved. The other day I was reading an article about the way the US handled Bin Laden's death and it outlined the ways in which the official announcements were a gift to conspiracy theorists- not showing the body being one of them.
