This thought came to me when cuz I'm re-watching the entire Buffy series and I'm currently on Season 6 where Buffy has all her money problems:

Why pay the Watcher and not the Slayer? And shouldn't the Watcher be financially responsible for the Slayer as well as being responsible for her training? Most previous Slayers' never had family (like Kendra) or friends and no other job to but to slay. How were they supposed to make money to survive? Who helped them?

It was quite obvious by seeing Buffy,Faith and Kendra's situations that the Slayer was never compensated by the Council or their Watchers, yet their entire group of "Watchers" are on a payroll with possible benefits.

There's only one Slayer (well, there USED to be only 1 Slayer) you figure those cheapskates could shell out a few bucks to keep their CHOSEN one secure and concentrating on the good fight instead of concentrating on finding a good meal.

I guess when the slayer was created theese things weren't an issue . I think maybe they just cared about her doing there dirty work and so be it x

I konw, if i was a slayer id say pay me as well or you'll never hear from me again.
Come to think of it, where did the council get all their money anyway?
I think they seemed very rich and powerful and if isnt government funding them, then who is?

I always kind of assumed that the Watcher gave the Slayer what little money she would need, provided her with food, shelter and so on. Remember Kendra? She was taught that family, school friends, boys etc. had no place in her life, and she was a typical Slayer. What was she going to do with money anyway? Buy clothes? She only has one shirt :s. Then again, Kendra is the most extreme example. Other Slayers that we know of weren't so shut-off from the world, but I don't think that the Council really thought of the Slayer as a human being, more as a really strong but replaceable killing machine. And killing machines are supposed to kill things, not spend money. Buffy was the first Slayer to rebel against the established order, as far as we know.

Angelic Slayer
Angelic Slayer
that's what I've always figured, too
Well nikki Wood had a son to look after too, so i assume her watcher made sure she was OK and made sure she and Robin
had a place to stay and feed. But i suppose as Slaying is a night shift job, they could just get a day job, but, its definetly not fair that Watchers get doe and Slayers dont.

It's all a part of the council's OWNING the Slayer, not working WITH the Slayer.

In the "Tales of the Slayers" stories, the Watcher was pretty much the guardian and soul support of their individual Slayers. Kendra mentioned that she had been in training with her Watcher for quite some time, and that her parents had basically given guardianship of her to the Watcher who was training her, so probably in most cases, that was the way it was done, and Buffy was the exception, possibly the first or at least one of the rare instances, where the Slayer actually was allowed to stay with her family. I got the feeling that Faith's original Watcher was her pseudo parent, since she mentioned her father being absent and her mother being a drunk.

In FFL, when Buffy and Giles are combing through the watchers' diaries, Buffy discovers the diaries of one slayer who worked as a blacksmith and crafted her own weapons. I wouldn't be surprised if, given their super strength, many slayers were soldiers, lumberjacks, or worked other jobs that gave them access to weaponry or to raw materials with which to craft their weapons.

Would anyone else(if they were a slayer) just sit there and say, ''Want me to slay? OK, Pay me''.
Id have an Angel Investigations Company up and running, or something along those lines.
Obviously if theres an apocolypse id do that for free(coz i might die if i didnt) but just randomers wanting saved? Pay me!!!

I got the impression that most Slayers lived with their Watchers, so the Watchers' Council was indirectly paying for the Slayer's needs. Obviously, Buffy was an exception to this, and I doubt the Watchers' Council would start paying the Slayer just because Buffy was different than the others.

I always wondered where the Watchers Council got their funding too. Maybe they were up to some shady business on the side😉.

^^^Or, the council was funded by the UN, or something.

Another money question: who was feeding everyone SITs during S7? Cause, dang!

I may not have the exact words that I want to use, but maybe someone else can sum it up better then me: I always thought that there was some interesting parallels between a woman staying at home and doing the hard work and only getting what she needs from the man. Almost very housewife-y. I really wish I could articulate what I mean a bit better, but I just can't!

forgive my ignorance, but SITs?...(it's been at least a year since I've seen S7, I've just gotten to S6 in my current Buffy-thon.) Or maybe I don't want to know, so I can be even more surprised in re-watching S7...

I always thought that Buffy should've asked for more (like being put on salary herself) when she convinced the council to retroactively start paying Giles again in S5. Especially considering all the money problems she had in S6 (not that she knew that, and not that it didn't make an interesting storyline with her being broke and finding jobs...)

Slayers In Training, a k a Potential Slayers, or "cannon fodder," according to Anya.

The first girls were brought to Sunnydale by Giles, so I would assume that he furnished the expense money for the girls' upkeep. If he could afford to fly all over the world picking up the various girls, he obviously had some money hid back somewhere. (As far as that goes, he might have "borrowed" a few access numbers to various Watchers' Council bank accounts when he was stealing their books dealing with the First Evil)

At least we have an explanation for the funding of all the former SITs now...I wonder how much Giles actually got paid, I mean he not only got paid as a Watcher until the council's demise, but he was also a school librarian and co-owner of the Magic Box. He must be ROLLIN in the dough. He's gonna be one big Sugar Daddy for whatever lucky lady snags him next.

There are few possibilities:

1. Giles -- he had rainy days fund or stole also some priceless magical artifact along with the texts from watchers council and sold it for heaps of gold. Considering what some people paying for some weird stuff nowadays, i am sure there are magical artifacts worth 7 number figures even 😛

2. Xander -- He still working i believe and as head of the crew probably earns a lot. Financing everyone might be too much altough unless he had saved some.

3. Andrew -- they tortured him to reveal where rest of the cash was from their bank robbery in S6. I am sure not all was spent.

4. Anya -- She did not quite write epic poem as much as visit a bank and withdraw lot of cash of which we never see or hear again later somehow.

5. Willow -- she used her magics to forge money. I am sure in last few milleniums there been a lot of research in that area 😛
