This has been mentioned a lot in the forums, especially the Riley threads.

Spike: The girl needs some monster in her man ... and that's not in your nature.

Spike says this to Riley. Put simply, do you agree with him? Does Buffy need the monster in her man? Buffy did wonder if she was attracted to 'wicked energy' guys and if so, does this include Riley and if not, does that mean she wasn't really that drawn to him?

Discuss.

I definitely think Buffy needs someone who does not feel inferior to her, and to whom she does not feel superior. She also needs a lover who can hold his own, so that the relationship is not marred by her having to protect him from the dangers of her life. But a monster ..? I've never been able to see anything positive in "needing a little monster in her man". To me, that reeks of unhealthy relationships in which the two lovers are opponents battling it out rather than partners pulling in the same directions. It also reminds me of all the stories, real and in fiction, where a well-meaning girl falls in love with a bloke who has a bit of a history and believes that her love will heal and change it.

Buffy has certainly fallen for men with a bit of a monster in them, but as she grows up I hope she'll mature into an emotionally stable woman who does not need a monster in her man. She may well choose to settle down (except, of course, that this isn't likely to happen in the Jossverse) with one of the two monster-men nonetheless, but I don't believe that it will be because she needs the monster. I believe it will be because she loves the man.

I disagree with that statement. Buffy only noticed/loved Angel and Spike -the ones with monsters in them- because of their humanity, their good nature, NOT because they used to kill thousands of innocents. I really hate how so many fans take everything Spike says at face value. Spike said that to get to Riley, and because the fact that Buffy had been head over heels in love with Angel came to his advantage.

I do agree that Buffy's perfect boyfriend should be someone equal to her as well as human. Perhaps a male Slayer. Heh. Some fans tend to care more about the demon side of Buffy and forget totally about the human side, which is equally important. Buffy may not find the perfect guy ever, because from what we've seen in the series and comics, that guy doesn't exist yet. The perfect guy would be Satsu, someone who has the demon and human in them, someone who's exactly like Buffy.

But hearts don't go for logic, and Buffy will fall in love with one of those men and it won't matter if he's perfect, doesn't matter if he's what she needs the most, doesn't matter if he's the right one, what matters is that she loves him, and they'll work the rest together.

I think she needs someone who is strong like her. Someone who is going to back her up, someone who can take everything and hide his tears if it hurts. Buffy doesn't want someone who needs her back, she wants someone who wants her back. Riley always needed her. He wanted her 24/7, but with Angel, or Spike, she couldn't be 24/7. But I disagree she needs some monster in her man. I always say her and Riley's relathionship could never work even if they loved each other so much, because she's not an ordinary girl, but he's an ordinary guy. And I'm sticking to that.

I'm a bit indifferent to that statement. I don't think that Buffy needs any particular 'type' of man, I don't think anyone has a 'type' really which is probably why. I agree with Sosa that Spike said that out of spite as opposed to having any real grasp of what Buffy needed.

And I don't think it's as black and white as she needs someone who doesn't feel inferior and who is as strong as her. Buffy could be with anyone or any 'type' of person she wanted if she could get over some of her issues. It's always made out that she is the one who is the 'victim' but she really isn't the easiest person to have as a girlfriend.

Maybe, without actually realizing it at the time, Spike was more insightful than he, or we, really knew. Sure, he was mostly mocking Riley (and if there ever was anyone in the Buffyverse who deserved mocking, it was Riley right then), but, as we saw later in Season 7, the spell that the Shadow Men used to create the First Slayer put a little monster, or demon, into her in order to give her the powers needed to effectively do her job. Arguably, what happens when a Potential becomes a Slayer, she is possessed by and forms a symbiotic relationship with her own demon, in a way similar to, but certainly not identical to, what happens when a human becomes a vampire. By using than analogy, it would appear, if I may be allowed to use the terms "monster" and "demon" interchangeably, that what Spike was saying was that Buffy would always need someone who was her equal, something that no normal human, like Riley, could ever be. Not necessarily a vampire, like either Angel or Spike, but someone more than mere human, maybe a male version of Gwen from "Angel."

Too bad she never met Connor or Groo, both are stronger than human and could take her to the beach for a nice tan.

First of all thanks for the interest. I certainly wouldn't let my mother see this thread lol, as she is a ardent Ruffy fan and might get offended. But anyway...

I definitely think Buffy needs someone who does not feel inferior to her, and to whom she does not feel superior.

I think this is true but not neccessarily exclusive to superstrength or lack of. Her superiority could have to do with ability and morality. For example Spike and Angel were both demons with dark pasts. She could argue moral superiority over them. All of her men have felt insecure about their relationship with Buffy. Angel obviously believed she deserved more and more meant in context normality. Riley felt she needed someone superhuman and Spike felt so insecure he believed not only that Buffy didn't love him when she said she did but also that she never really had a shot with her. Arguably Spike was treated as the most inferior overall. Although many wish us to place emphasis on Season 7 Spuffy, I would at least argue that Season 6 Spuffy did a number on him.

She also needs a lover who can hold his own, so that the relationship is not marred by her having to protect him from the dangers of her life.

Well if she continues the life she has then, she certainly needs someone who can live in her world. As of yet, we haven't seen it work with any of them, so it's difficult of us to make such generalizations...

Well arguably all her men maybe better for knowing her but it's no guarantee the relationship will work. I agree about Buffy needing a monster in her man, not being all that healthy.

Buffy has certainly fallen for men with a bit of a monster in them, but as she grows up I hope she'll mature into an emotionally stable woman who does not need a monster in her man.

Is this something Buffy wants or is it circumstance? As for Buffy maturing...well as you may know, I'm a full on supporter of cookie dough.

She may well choose to settle down (except, of course, that this isn't likely to happen in the Jossverse) with one of the two monster-men nonetheless, but I don't believe that it will be because she needs the monster. I believe it will be because she loves the man.

Agreed.

I disagree with that statement. Buffy only noticed/loved Angel and Spike -the ones with monsters in them- because of their humanity, their good nature, NOT because they used to kill thousands of innocents.

This is true, IMO.

I really hate how so many fans take everything Spike says at face value. Spike said that to get to Riley, and because the fact that Buffy had been head over heels in love with Angel came to his advantage.

It's difficult because although Buffy says she wants joe normal, she pulled away from Riley.

It depends on how we interpret what has been said as well. Spike believed she likes men who hurt her. Whilst Buffy has gone through periods of self-degradation, I believe her when she says she doesn't hate like that anymore. This could be further evidence of her relationships being circumstantial.

It was Angel who decided he couldn't be with her when he was human but she seemed happy enough to be humanAngel's girlfriend. Would it have worked out? We don't know. But in any respect Buffy hasn't had a successful relationship yet, so can we assume that she would have one with a superpowered being? My Bander fanfriends seem to think that's a gross assumption. lol.

But hearts don't go for logic, and Buffy will fall in love with one of those men and it won't matter if he's perfect, doesn't matter if he's what she needs the most, doesn't matter if he's the right one, what matters is that she loves him, and they'll work the rest together.

It will also depend where she is, personally. Feelings and types (if she does indeed have a type) change.

To be honest I wont quote anyone else because my post would be frightingly long.

I post what I posted in another forum. This will be stepping on some of your points but...

"....And not forgetting all her men dispite the parallels have been very different and she's fallen for them under different circumstances. If we assume she was telling the truth when she said her 'I love yous' then she loved three very different men. If we pick and choose who she loved then we can mix and match it to suite our theories. Say for example she loved Angel, and cared for Riley because he was nice and was touched by everything Spike did for her and gave him the mercy love or she loved Spike but fancied Angel and cared for Riley etc.

Just to comment briefly on my point, it's about making the theory fit. I once said, if we believe most of what Spike said on the subject then the only person Buffy's did or will love is Angel. I'm not convinced myself really. I do believe Buffy loved Spike, and don't necessarily believe she needs a monster in her man.

I think Spike and Angel ar very different people apart from the fact they are vampires who loved Buffy. There are other parallels but there are so many differences that it makes it hard for me to believe they are the same type and the nature of their relationships are very different.

Which is the point. Practically speaking it hasn't always been that safe having Spike and Angel around and both of them have died or been incapicitated in some way during their relationship. People such as Xander, Giles etc have survived. Heck even Buffy died herself, so whilst superpowers may be important in the good fight, it's not a given that everyone in her life needs these abilities, even a boyfriend. None her relationships have been easy. Would they have necessarily been harder if her beaus were human. Maybe in some ways but with soullessness, attempted rapes, teachers being killed...well, it doesn't fill me with confidence comtemplating her next lover if he has a little demon in him.

I don't believe Buffy likes pain in the way Spike says she does but the burden of what she does creates a circumstance whereby 'normal' relationships are hard to come by. I think my mum said it best: she doesn't look for these men, they seem to find her.

The actual main point of the passage was about generalising. You don't need to be human to be insecure about being in a relationship with Buffy. You don't need to be human for Buffy to pull off her insolationalist Slayer crap, (which she did with almost everyone, including Riley). I also don't believe you need to be human for Buffy to believe (at least on an unconscious level) that's she's superior to you. There are no guarantees, no rules as far as I'm concerned. It's about cookie dough as I see it. Why should she or us, define her through her men. I wouldn't necessarily do this with any girl, especially a girl with an unusual lifestyle or a girl in her early twenties.

Ok knowing that we know that human people, if they are careful can live in the world of supernatural, do you think that means that Buffy needs someone who is physically her equal? (we are putting the monster bit aside for a moment) If so why? Is it about practicality? If Angel turned out to be human (when she first started to fall for him, she thought he was human remember?) how do think the relationship would have progressed if Angel just turned out to be an older human guy who's parents really were killed by vampires? Is it so set in stone that her relationship with Riley wouldn't have worked out if she got to him in time in Into The Woods?

I think Buffy just needed a man who she could look to as an equal. Not only equal in strength but with things like love. She was not loving Riley as much as he loved her because she, in my opinion, thought she was stronger and more wise when it came to evil. She was not loving him as much because, dare I say, she thought she was better than him. Angel and Spike were guys that could hold their own, and even come to her rescue. I think Buffy just wanted a man that she was positive could take care of her and protect her.

Protect her how? She was stronger than all of them!!!! For one I think there are many ways to take care of someone and Riley wasn't given the chance to be able to do so. In practical terms, an example is how he was able to give her first aid and the vamp attack. I've never got the impression that she needed someone like Spike and Angel to come to her rescue. Everyone of the Scoobies have contributed and as for example Xander and Fred show, sometimes the ordinary humans can save the superpowered people. If it were not for normal joe Xander, Buffy wouldn't even be alive.

Sorry, I screwed up in explaining that. I dont mean she literally needs someone to protect her. What I was trying to say was she is porbably sick and tired of being the strong one who protects people and she just wants a guy to take care of her and have it be possible that is she was ever in a tight place, he had the strength to come in and help her, which both of them have done many times. As for Xander, yes he has saved her, but in those situations it was possible for him to save her. In other ones, fighting Glory for example, he would have been screwed. Not to say that Spike or Angel ever fought her, but can you just picture poor Xand going up against her alone? As I said, Buffy needed a guy that was her equal, and who DID have the same or similar strength that she held.

If we're not talking about someone literally protecting her then my point remains. I think it's important for couples to share and have that closeness so dispite what many think of Riley, I don't think he was unreasonable in his request. It's about letting each other in.

Are these necessary requisites for a healthy relationship for Buffy. Everyone contributes in their own way, why does it have to be the physical way that is important to Buffy. I don't remember her mentioning that.

I believe she mentioned once that it is hard to not have him at the same level of fighting skills and superpowerness as she was. That was merely my opinion on why she might have. I agree he was reasonable in his request, I was just stating why I thought Buffy was having trouble letting him in. That does not mean that I agree with what I think were her reasons.

I don't agree. She had feelings for Angel before she found out he was a vampire. She already loved him. & with Spike, she got so close with him (I'm talking their friendship in S7) because he was there for her.

I don't think it has anything to do with having a 'monster in her man'.

Ok get ready with the spoilery goodness.

Ok with the revelation of Buffy's feelings for Xander, where do you think it leaves the whole 'Monster in her Man' theory? I personally believe that it's been proving what I've been saying for a while... that a guy doesn't need to be preternatural to get Buffy's attention or even being her equal. Out of all of the men in her life, it is the humans now at her side...

Personally, I think that it's been a long dry spell, and Buffy's getting desperate. We saw a little of that in the "Wolves At The Gate" arc.nd I believe that this is exactly the same thing, no more, no less.
I don't think she necessarily needs monster in her man, but I think men have trouble coping with her if they're not of the supernatural variety. Riley had the issue of wanting to protect Buffy and be her equal, but he couldn't. A lot of guys have the same mentality; men should protect women. I don't think it's something Buffy has to have (although it makes her life easier if they can fight and she doesn't have to worry about them) but I think they're generally the type of men who can accept her.

This has been mentioned a lot in the forums, especially the Riley threads.

Spike says this to Riley. Put simply, do you agree with him? Does Buffy need the monster in her man? Buffy did wonder if she was attracted to 'wicked energy' guys and if so, does this include Riley and if not, does that mean she wasn't really that drawn to him?

Do I agree with Spike in his assessment of what Buffy "needs'? Yes and no. I do agree that Buffy needs - deserves - to be with someone on the same physical and intellectual level as she is. I believe that a hero should be with a hero, not just some oridinary guy. When two people are not equals, it jsut simply can not work in the long run. Why do you think it didn't work with her and Riley? Because he felt inferior.

First off, I'd like to say that everyone has made very insightful comments, but this what I think:

I think Spike's declaration to Riley that Buffy needed a "little monster in her man," was, as WA said, simply mocking Riley and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Yet, Spike is known for his insight, and I think on some level his "assessment" of her was partially accurate; after all, at that point, the only other person she'd admitted to loving was Angel - a vampire - leading the misguided Spike to believe that his vampirism was what drew Buffy to him (surely, he knew it wasn't his charm and personality, lol). Personally, I don't think Buff jumped Spike's bones because he was a vampire - I think she jsut simply thought he was attractive, and of course, the fact that he was basically the only person who could hurt her at that point was a turn-on to her (she proves his by only deciding to sleep with him after she finds out he can hurt her.)

Here's the exchange from "Into the Woods" in case people need a refresher:

Spike: Come on. You're not the long haul guy and you know it.
Riley: Shut up.
Spike: You know it. Or else you wouldn't be getting suck jobs from two-bit vampire trulls. The girl needs some monster in her man... and that's not in your nature... no matter how low you try to go.

Spike knew what Riley's intention was behind what he did. The difference here is that Riley wasn't a bad person (like Spike, arguably) he was simply trying to be because he thought that's what Buffy wanted. Spike was truly "bad" and for some reason, Buffy appreciated that enough to persue a relationship with him.

Despite his nastiness, Spike knew on some level that Buffy wasn't looking for someone who was trying to be anything - whether it be evil or good. This was Riley's big mistake, his attempt to be something he was not - something edgier, reckless - so he could relate to Buffy better. This was his modivation behind getting sucked off by the vampire whores.

True. What Spike loved so much about Buffy was her strength. He never felt threatened by it at all, as Riley obviously did.

I actually agree that it makes sense that Buffy should be with someone who can live in her world, but I'm not sure if he needs to be supernatural. I mean out of everyone it's the humans who are still by her side.

I think Spike's declaration to Riley that Buffy needed a "little monster in her man," was, as WA said, simply mocking Riley and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Well he wasn't just mocking him, he was deliberately trying to eliminate Riley as the competition, by placing doubts in his mind. The cracks were there already but he was exploiting them: a la Spike is the Yoko Factor or Angelus in Soulless.

Yet, Spike is known for his insight, and I think on some level his "assessment" of her was partially accurate; after all, at that point, the only other person she'd admitted to loving was Angel - a vampire - leading the misguided Spike to believe that his vampirism was what drew Buffy to him

But it's so difficult to judge. Buffy also said she wished Angel would have been human and was attracted to him before she knew he was a vampire and happy to be with him when he was human so why does Buffy hold back with Riley.

(surely, he knew it wasn't his charm and personality, lol).

Spike and Buffy's situation was completely different from her and Angel's though, so it's difficult to define her through either or any relationship, hence cookie dough.

Arguably though didn't Spike do exactly the same thing. The soul, the changes? It's because it's what Buffy wanted. When she wanted the 'big bad' back he then goes all tough guy. I don't think buffy wanted someone truly bad, she used him because she didn't consider him a person. Yes Riley didn't have that vibe because at the time she respected him more lol.

I don't think Spike knew what Buffy wanted. It was more complicated her having a type. I believe the qualities and pitfuls were inherent in the relationships themselves mainly because despite Spike and Angel being different, Spike, Angel and Riley are very different and each relationships had different premises and flaws.

True. What Spike loved so much about Buffy was her strength. He never felt threatened by it at all, as Riley obviously did.

He was but as Riley pointed out, that wasn't the main reason for the vampire whores, nor was it his main complaint about the relationship. His question is whether she needed him enough to stay.
