Monsters Of The Week that could have been great ''big bads'' or played a larger role?

We all know season 7's big bad appeared in a season 3 episode of buffy, and that got me thinking about MOTW that could have had stayed on for a few episodes more, or had big- bad potential.

In the episode ''After Life'', the monster, a demon that the scoobies made, I thought was interesting. Although temporary, it could possess and take form... fitting into the psychological themes that season 6 addressed.


This question also includes Angel as well.

I always thought, with some major re-tooling, Dracula could have been a recurring villain/character, if not a big bad like The Master. I wasn't fond of the actor or the direction they took him in, but I felt like there was plenty of good potential stories they could have told with him and Spike, Xander and a few others.

I thought they could have incorporated the invisible girl (forget her name) from S1 into The Initiative storyline in S4. They kind of set that up and they never went anywhere with it.

In Angel S1, I know there were having backstage problems with Glenn Quinn and needed to write him out of the show, but I always kind of thought that they could have turned The Scourage into the S1 big bads, and killed off Doyle at the climax of the season. I really like "To Shanshu in L.A." though, so I was fine with how they did it.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Ethan Rayne! Seriously, that guy is awesome.

Or he could have joined the Scoobies for a few episodes. Would have been interesting as well.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Having Ethan come up with some scheme, like Halloween or Band Candy, and have it just spiral completely out of control would have been pretty interesting. He's the cause of it, but not the true "big bad", so to solve the problem he has to team with Buffy and Giles. I like that a lot actually.

As an actual seasonal villain he would be kind of like the Trio, i guess. Only not as... childish and nerdy.

I love the fact that invisable girl got shunted off to some CIA spook training there are some good stories that can be writen for that in the Buffyverse a new toy for writers to play with

Have Quentin Travers survive the blast at the Council headquarters by luck or design and go over to the dark side - many of us would say he was already there. He would have knowledge of the slayers, access to arcane documents, political connections, ability to do magic and the ability to blindside Giles and the Potentials. The first rule of villainy is the villain has to be a credible threat to the hero.

Marcie, the invisible girl, showed some promise but did not have the power she needed. to be the ultimate evil.

The stone monster that blocked the sun in Angel was almost impervious to any kind of defense. He was a good candidate (without the rulership of Cordelia). The combined forces of Angel, Faith and others did not even slow him down.

Ethan Rayne is one of my favourite characters and an addition of real magical power could have made him a formidable opponent.

Oh I definitely agree with Dracula- kinda like The Master, the whole entire concept of being around so long that they ''transcend'' human/ vampire form is brilliant especially with a personality intact- probably the reason why I never really thought much of the ubervamps.

Yeah agree. I love his eccentric monsters and spells. It's very funny. I agree with Always Bangel, he would be suited for being the cause of something, not necessarily the one that continues to make it worse.

Yeah what was up with that? I found it really fascinating though- feeling invisible makes you literally invisible. The CIA thing was kinda stupid considering it was never really followed up, but if it was, it could have been great.

Quentin Travers sounds like a fantastic villain! I was actually thinking of an evil watcher. Giles and Wesley both made space from the council, and perhaps an evil watcher would be great. I love your idea!
