MORE On Angel

^that's more or less what I think. I never thought he did that on purpose; it makes no sense. He was suprised and lost his composure for a minute. He got caught up in the moment and overcome with his emotions, because, after all, meeting your soul mate and falling in love is a deeply emotional event!

Ok, ok I'll leave out (some of) the Bangel arguement. But still, it was more about a loss of composure then "he did it to scare her away"
I do think that his actions later on in that ep (telling her he killed his parents, for example) were in part to scare her away and also because of his depression and despondancy. He's met the girl he loves, he knows she is going to try to kill him because of who he is, and he's kinda a wreck because of it. But in the end, it all works out and they live happily ever after. (They haven't got to that part in the comics yet)

I don't believe that his vamping out was purposeful in the slightest. He was in love with Buffy, hadn't been expecting to kiss her, and he probably found the sudden kiss and closeness to not only a real live human being whose blood is pulsating so nicely, but someone he happened to have feelings for, rather intoxicating and overwhelming. Soul he might have, but that doesn't change him from being a vampire, and blood is still tempting. 😛

Here's a question *I* have, though. We see at the end of the episode that the cross he gave Buffy burns him when they kiss. So why is it that he wears one around his neck? (and that we don't see a burn mark from it)

Because the cross he wears has not been blessed. Just like water doesnt burn them until it's blessed. A cross has no significance at all unless it has been blessed, otherwise it is just a t.

Ah, true. Hadn't thought of that. I can understand his character wearing it save for the burning part. ;) Makes sense now.
Wait, I don't think that works, scobro. Surely not every cross we saw them whip out in both shows was blessed by a priest? There were a LOT of them.

With the amount of churches in Sunnydale, it's very possible they *could* all be blessed. ;)

That's why the shows are flawed; a cross is nothing but a symbol, there is no power behind it.

True, but a symbol is always meaningless until people attribute meaning to it. Any word is just a word...it has meaning only because we give it meaning.

Perhaps vampires react badly to crosses because they EXPECT to be repelled by them?

What I meant was that vampires obviously prescribe a certain meaning to a cross, and it wouild explain why they seem to be extremely effective at repelling SOME vampires, while they have virtually no effect on others. 😀

UOTE

Maybe the vampire visage is his actual face, and the human one, being something that he no longer really is, requires a certain amount of concentration to maintain. The kis so surprised him that he lost that concentration momentarily. That would explain why he, Spike, or any other vampire, for that matter, "vamp out" when they get angry, surprised, attacked, whatever.

I agree it happens a lot during the fighting scenes, Spike and Angel will morph to the vamp face when being smacked around.

Also I just found this quote that fits with it from "Reptile Boy"
Willow: "Have you heard from Angel? When he got so mad about you being in danger, and changed into a... grrr!.... It was the most amazing thing I ever saw."

I always thought it was the curse starting to act up
and Angel kissed a girl he liked when he probally hasn't kissed since god knows when
so i think he would be happy but not happy enough to go
all Angelus

OOOOOH! VERY INTERESTING THEORY!
Lou:
But, one thing that has ALWAYS bugged me is WHY Angel turns into a vampire when they're kissing the first time.
I thought it might be the cross, but I've watched and watched and he comes NO WHERE near it.
like white avenger is writing, I always thought that bumpyface is the natural state of the vampires, and that they need to concentrate to keep the human face on. If it's like that, him vamping out when they were kissing so intensely isn't all that strange. I mean, it's rather normal to be focused on just one thing the first time you're kissing someone you're in love with.
Here's a question *I* have, though. We see at the end of the episode that the cross he gave Buffy burns him when they kiss. So why is it that he wears one around his neck? (and that we don't see a burn mark from it)
Do we see that it's a cross? I'm almost tempted to turn of "The Puppet Show" and stuff "Angel" back into the dvd-player, just to check.
I've just finished watching "Angel", and since I'm as close to home alone as I get these days (one kiddo asleep, husband and one kiddo away for the weekend) I've decided to let my keyboard ramble.
While I've pretty much outgrown being charmed by dark, arrogant men (as per an earlier post), troublesome love stories move me as much as they've ever done. The "Angel, do you snore"-moment is right down my alley, especially now when I know where it's all headed. (Now, if anyone wants to discuss the culture of women falling for dark men and the uselessness of dreaming of troublesome love, I'm all in. But that's probably the feminist bookworm in me speaking.) Before (we're assuming that he's) going to sleep, Angel is fiddling with something, it looks like he's putting on a ring. Is this the first we see of the Claddagh ring?
Now it's time for a little unnecessary nitpicking. I did find it somewhat odd that Buffy was still wearing Angel's jacket even after she learned that he's a vampire. It is his jacket's she's wearing in the hospital, isn't it? Fair enough, I suppose that can be seen as a sign of how strongly she's attached to the hope of him being a good vampire. But then when Buffy comes to kill him it seems that he's back in the jacket. He may have two leather jackets, of course, but I'd say that would lessen the symbol value a little.

Interesting!
decent episode, but the scene with Darla and the guns was kinda ridiculous.

Why didn't her and Buffy just duke it out?

Is it just me, or was Angel a bit of a doofus the 1st season?

Lou
I second the doofusness!
Okay, this is random..
and it's not about Angel.

Though when Buffy tells Angel to come in and "The Three" are following them.
Why is it that Angel goes in because he's invited, but then then one of "The Three" manages to get his whole hand in the door and Buffy needs to slam it on him.
Then Angel procedes to tell her that vampires can't come in unless they're invited.

We've all seen in later episodes that vampires can't cross the thresh hold (sp?) at all, arms, legs nothing.

Interesting.
I have wondered sometimes about Angel kicking doors in. It would seem like to have a force to kick in the door it would have to cross the threshold just a TAD, right?

I remember in an episode in Angel, not in Buffy where he kicks a door down, and then someone said "It's quite the entrance for someone who can't enter" something along those lines.

Yeah, but wouldn't his foot have crossed while kicking? Then he just stands there. I will try to kick in some doors and test it! ;)

There are two possible answers to this.

1. It is a continuity error.

2. Buffy's yelled invitation, a general "Come in!", actually counted toward ALL the vampires in the vicinity. Therefore, the Three COULD have broken a window and gotten in, kicked down the door, come back later, etc. Perhaps they didn't realize the invitation had counted towards them as well, or perhaps the Master summoned them right then...and then, when they returned to the Master with news of Buffy escaping, Darla staked them. Which I believe was a stupid thing to do, had these vampires actually had access to Buffy's home, which of course the Master did not know about.
