Fred was the most gut-wrenching for me. I told myself for a week after seeing the promo that there was no way Joss would let Fred die. And when she did, there were a few tears welling. And then in Shells when she leaves Texas with "A Place Called Home" brought out a few more tears. By far, my favorite two episodes of the entire ANGEL series were "A Hole In The World" and "Shells".

Joyce would be my second. It was unexpected, and Sarah Michelle's performance in the first Act of the episode when it's just her and the body...perfection. And so emotionally gut-wrenching. The Body would definately be called one of my favorites.

Tara is my third. It, too, was unexpected. Probably even more so, as she and Willow had just gotten back together, and then all of a sudden, she's dead on the floor, and Willow is dieing inside. Also a great episode.

I cry quite easily -- So I've cried over a lot of Whedonverse deaths...
But I thinkt he death that most affected me emotionally has got to be Tara. Not only was her death SUCH a shock ... It came out of nowhere, but I kept crying every episode after that for ages.

It wasn't just the moment of her death ... But everything fell apart afterwards, and I loved her so much.

Oh, now you're gonna make me cry again.

Joyce is the second-runner up, just because, like Tara, her death really changed the course of the show, and it was a total shock. The Body is a masterpiece, and ... I think many fans viewed Joyce as this comforting steady that was always there, even when things went wrong in other areas. And then Joyce was gone, and it was like, wait. Joss really can kill anyone.

Of course, there's also Fred, which made me cry and cry and cry ... But since she was replaced by Illyria -- It was a different type of death than the others. Painful and heartwrenching -- But it was hard to really mourn the loss of the character, because there was a new character in her place.

The thing I love about Buffy fans is how emotional they (we!) get over a death... It means a lot to us, which just shows how each character is loved and developed in a way that makes it both interesting, but also endearing. You just have to give your heart over.

I agree. Fred not being ALL GONE was a plus. It made it slightly easier. Well, after the actual DEATH episodes.
Easily it is Fred and Joyce, for me. Tied. Joyce's death made me cry the first time, and every time thereafter. It evokes my ever increasing fear that my time with my father is limited. Anya's reaction to Joyce's death is perfect.

And Fred. I love Fred. She is goodness and light and I love her. When she died it was like the air was sucked out of the room.
