Most Tragic AtS Character?

Yay for typing errors. That's TRAGIC, if you didn't catch on 😉 ... can anyone fix the thread title for me?

I've been debating with myself over this question for awhile now, and I was wondering what you guys think. I'd probably go with Wesley in the end because, well, that man's life sucked. I can't even express how awful I feel for him, because he's such a wonderful guy deep down and he always gets the short end of the stick. I also considered Fred and Connor. I mean, going from awesomely cute baby Connor to depressed, crazy teen Connor really bites! As for Fred... stuck in Pylea for five years, psychological issues, and in the end she doesn't even come out of her horrific, painful death with a soul. 🙁

I thought the most tragic character was Darla, or whoever she was way back when. She had no choice whether or not to be brought back in that box, or to come back with one foot still in the grave, so to speak. She had to deal with the same pain and regret Angel did, more, even, since she had had so much more time as a demon.

When she has no other choice (in her mind) and goes to Angel for the one thing that he can give her, he sends her away (sure, he does it for her own good, but she still feels the sting of his turning aside). Later, when he tries to help her, she has to watch as the one person whose life she most completely destroyed (she sired him, gave him the gypsy, bungled an attempt to get the Calderash to un-cuse him, then threw him out--later trying to kill his girlfriend and working against him with W&H) risk everything, including his immortal life, for her. Unlike Angel, she cannot fight for herself or go out against the forces of evil for redemption--she is only human, and a dying one at that. She can only watch as her very existance threatens to destroy the one man she loved (as much as she was able) for centuries.

Then, when she finally finds the courage to live on and die as she feels she should, even her right to death is taken from her by Lindsey and his misguided love for her. And she is gone, leaving behind a demon-inhabited shell.

Even her one redemptive act that she is permitted to complete (her death to save Connor) is not really her own--it is connor's soul, not her's that gives her the resolve to do it. The Darla that once was never had any choice--she had long ago faded into the mists.

I'd say Wesley. He came so far, become such a compotent hero, only to first make the wrong choice regarding Connor, then lose Fred, and then his own life. I think tragedy is marked by the successes it destroys.

I'd definitely say Wesley. What happened in season 3 was tragic. My next choice would be Darla. At least she made the ultimate sacrifice.
