Movie Inaccuracies

What movie inaccuracies bother you? Not so much book to film ones, but more historical or true life ones? Or if its a British film but they do something American.

Is there a film you won't rewatch because of it?

I dislike films that are based on historical events but either change stuff or outright alter them completely - The Monuments Men, U571. I don't mind and sometimes enjoy those that make things up and make no pretence of being accurate - Churchill: The Hollywood Years, Ingloriuous Bastards. It's the pretending stuff is accurate that annoys me.

It it probably not a coincidence that all of those are WW2 films.

Haha horse movies haha. They have gotten better more recently, but they are usually the most unrealistic romantisizing crap. They do tend to use very pretty horses, so for that reason I will watch again. And again. And again.

It bothers me when people of the past are given modern sensibilities to make them more likeable. For example, the American Founding Fathers, who mostly owned slaves (even Hamilton), and weren't as bothered by it as we pretend. It's better to grapple with their cognitive dissonance about freedom and human rights, than to whitewash them into something they weren't. But I still love the musical, Hamilton!

I am always annoyed by inaccuracies in sci-fi films, such as sound in the vacuum of space. Yet I keep watching them, too.

It's easier to use these historical figures to sell you propaganda if they leave out the part where Washington owned slaves, or the part where Teddy Roosevelt basically got us into the Spanish-American War for no other reason than to prove we could beat an imperial power, or that Lincoln suspended habeas corpus and jailed newspaper editors that were critical of him (even if they didn't support the South).

I also feel that this diminishes the sacrifices made by those who fought, and sometimes died, to change things.

Sound in space is now so firmly embedded in the minds of many that it is truly difficult to get rid of it.

I saw Moonfall a couple of months ago, which may as well be called Scientific Inaccuracy: The Movie. And then there is Impact, I think it was a made for TV from the SyFy channel, whose premise is the Moon is shattered by being hit with fragments from a brown dwarf.

Watch the early episodes of Supernatural, when Dean puts in a tape of Metallica and AC/DC plays. They would be lucky if they used the original recording, not that guy from the group Geordie. Just as well I still liked the music.

This is sort of an inaccuracy.

In Jurassic Park, the T-Rex steps over the paddock and the big iconic scene in the rain happens.

The main characters go into the paddock and…there’s a massive chasm now!

I love (as in when they're pointed out) these inaccuracies - this was something I never even picked up on. I believe they also owned up to the fact they made that mistake when making the film and didn't even realise it. 😂

Nevertheless - that scene is iconic, and still gives me chills when I watch it.
