What were your favorite movies that were released in 2013, and what were your least favorites?

I've got to say, all movies that I was really looking forward to ended up being a disappointment. However, there were quite a few surprises that I didn't think I'd enjoy as much as I did.

I tried to rank the movies I saw 2013 in the theater:

01 Captain Phillips
02 Prisoners
03 Gravity
04 The World's End
05 Thor: The Dark World
06 The Conjuring
07 Iron Man 3
08 The Wolverine
09 The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
10 Oblivion
11 Star Trek Into Darkness
11 Man of Steel

(I only ranked the movies that were released in the US in 2013. For example, I didn't rank Django Unchained, although I saw it in theaters in January, because its US release date was Christmas 2012.)
 
My three favorites this year were Catching Fire, Desolation of Smaug and The East.
 
There are still a lot of movies I haven't seen that were released in 2013, but out of the few I did see I really enjoyed: Catching Fire, World War Z (although the ending wasn't great), Warm Bodies, 12 Years a Slave, and Now You See Me.

Edit: I forgot The Heat. I was forced to take my little cousin to see it and was shocked at how funny it was.

It was a good year for science fiction.

Anyone else seen The Wolf of Wall Street? Reviewers and people I know are raving about it but I found it a bit much. So many orgies. Too many orgies. Here's a fun fact: the word **** is used 506 times in 180 minutes! I feel so lame for getting bored.
What did you guys think of it?

I haven't seen it yet and. I read that it's similar to GoodFellas which I enjoyed very much, but from what I've seen it doesn't look like I'd like it. I expect it to be a little like The Departed where there are only unlikable characters and an unsatisfying story. But I'll probably check it out. It has happened more than once that trailers gave my a false impression of a movie.

It's very unlike Goodfellas & Departed. It's a comedy (of sorts) with no gangsters or violence. Just dodgy bankers.
I absolutely adored Frozen. Great cast, great music. I also really enjoyed Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Catching Fire, Star Trek into Darkness, Warm Bodies and Monsters University.

Pacific Rim was great, it was interesting to see a giant robot/mecha movie done by someone not in Japan, where that type of thing is most popular.

Elysium gave me a lot of food for thought, a good one that will make you think.

Frozen is one of the best Disney movies I've seen in a while.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a whimsical film that I think anyone trying to "find themselves" can relate to. The adventures he goes on in it are fun to watch.

Wow, you watch a lot of movies in the theater. I only watch the ones that really interest me, which are quite few actually. Sometimes I don't go for months, but sometimes I go to see two movies in one night.
Of the many movies you've watched last year, which ones did you like best?
 
I've seen so many this year its hard to remember them all. The ones that stick in my mind are:
- Thor: The Dark World
- Man of Steel
- Catching Fire
- Gravity
- World War Z
- The Wolverine
- Anchorman 2 (so funny I spat my coke everywhere)
 
First of all...I can barely believe that so many of these movies came out last year. I feel like I saw them decades ago. I'm absolutely positive I'm forgetting tons of movies...I compiled this list using everyone else's, haha.

I'm not going to list everything I saw (which wasn't everything), but I have to give a ton of praise to Frozen. I did not expect that to be my favorite movie of the year at all - in fact, I kind of went in expecting not to like it despite all the reviews I saw praising it - but wow, that movie came out of nowhere. I... could go on forever talking about why I loved it so much, but I get the feeling that this is not the place.

I also didn't get to see many movies this year, but I enjoyed We're the Millers and Thor: The Dark World. I promised my BFF I'd see Catching Fire with her for her birthday and was surprised at how good it was!
 
I watched The Wolf of Wall Street yesterday. It was entertaining and quite funny, but I didn't think it was that good. And I don't think I've ever seen so many boobs naked women in a big Hollywood production. And I don't think that most of the stuff that's in the movie even happened in real life, and that Jordan Belfort's book is just filled with lies. It felt like a fictional story about a over-the-top version of Belfort. After all, he's a conman.
And if you leave out all the drug and sex scenes, there's actually very little story and substance in the movie, in my opinion. They could have cut out one hour and wouldn't really have changed anything in the movie.

Have you seen Evil Dead? I think it was very good. Not as good as the original, but one of the best horror movies of the last ten years or so.
 
I saw most of the movies mentioned in this thread but honestly, most of them I found as the same old stuff you'd come to expect. I enjoyed Star Trek (even though Kahn wasn't himself) and it gave me a chance to see what all the hype over Benedict Cumberbatch is.

I was pretty disappointed in The Wolverine. I enjoy watching Hugh Jackman but Wolverine's storyline has been overly beat to death. There are 1001 places within the comics they could take the movies but they seem to insist on making up their own bad story lines.

I'd have to say my favorites I saw this last year were Catching Fire and Iron Man 3. Star Trek wasn't too bad but disappointingly predictable.
