Movies/TV Shows On The Internet

I know that it is technically illegal to download, or probably even watch, movies and TV shows on most sites, on the internet, but there are some that do have commercials (not in and of itself a qualifier, I know, since the money made for advertising doesn't necessarily go to the networks or shows' producers) and the networks themselves shoe their own and others' programming. Am I correct in assuming that Big Brother isn't going to come crashing into my home some night and drag me away for watching "Firefly" on HULU or SYFY's web site?

I don't think that the watching itself is illegal.
To my knowledge it is only illegal to download or upload movies, videos, music etc.

No, if you are watching on official network websites or places like Hulu you are watching perfectly within the parameters of the law.

As JCoatsworth mentioned above, I believe it is only the hosting, uploading and downloading of shows that is actually against the law.

as has already been mentioned, hosting, uploading, and dowloading are against the law... streaming, on any website commercials or not, is not. I stream everything I watch. I use a website called project free tv (google it). It's got a wide selection and every time a show airs a new episode and it is uploaded onto one of the hosting site PFTV uses, they indicate they have the new episode. it's useful in making sure you don't forget one. They also have the shows scheduled to air new episodes that day listed at the top. that way, if your show is on a weekly hiatus or something, you don't keep refreshint the page excpecting to see it has a new episode... very helpful.

Yeah, that's the one that I use primarily. If it weren't for that site, I would never get to see "Castle," "Burn Notice," or "Human Target," among others, because I'm always busy when they air.

I don't have cable so any time I want to watch a show that's not on the basic network channels, I have to watch online... and I hate the TV. For a while we didn't have a TV so I had to watch EVERYTHING online... And then we got the TV and I was SO excited because I got to watch things as they aired. We got the TV for Christmas so I was freaking during the spring premieres. Of course, I did have to choose from my shows shown at the same time... but after watching HIMYM, I decided it wasn't worth it... The commercials were TERRIBLE! And they made the show feel shorter even though I was sitting there for a longer period of time. There were only 8 minutes of commercial vs 22 minutes of HIMYM but because I wanted to see HIMYM and I didn't want to see the commercials, they felt longer. So I decided the best way for me to enjoy my shows is to watch them online with no commercials a couple hours after they air. It's working great for me. Although sometimes PFTV doesn't upload fast enough for me so I'll go check fastpasstv.com which usually has it. I only do that if I wait an hour and the show isn't there on PFTV...
