So, I watched Serenity again tonight and it got me to thinking...

What exactly is his...deal? Mr. Universe. Like, what does he do? He seems to have the power to be everywhere at once, and to keep tabs on everything that's happening in the 'verse...but how? Why? Wash says they need to talk to him in order to "get their bearings." - i.e. figure what what the hell happened with River, I assume.

Also, regarding the information that River found out about Miranda and the experiments that went on there which created the Reavers... Mal thinks that Mr. Universe has the power to broadcast it universally.

Thoughts?

He's an excellent computer/signal hacker, from what I gathered. He knew how to latch onto signals and get a read off of them, which basically means he could get information from anywhere in the Universe. He also has a lot of fancy equipment to do it, which allows Mal to broadcast the Miranda footage to the universe. Isn't one of his lines something like, "You can't stop the signal"?

I liked him well enough, but I liked his wife more. Buffy-bot, anyone? =D

Some people just know everything. Take me, for instance. People on these boards are always coming to me for advice, or to broadcast terrible government secrets they've discovered internationally. Sometimes it's tough being this great.

Quite.
He's like those two guys from hackers(i think thats the right movie). It all seems pretty simple really just like putting something on the internet except its the future and he can pretty much hack into tv satellites to broadcast the information. Also he has like everything streaming to his computer?(if you can call it that, more of a giant central processor).

I loved Mr. Universe, but I don't know why he was there or what he was. I'd call him an easy plot device.

Haha, more or less. And I love your signature! Big Damn Heroes, indeed.
Agreed with Bluebie, he just happened to be there and helpful. I think it's cool that you can see everything through a lot of TV screens. I'm sure he had fun. And wow, the way he left the message when he died, I love it. 😉
