The current thread about Dr Who just got me to wondering something. Though I'm not a fan of the show, it's my impression that, though the character of Dr Who changes periodically, no one seems to protest about a new actor taking on the role. Though I'm fairly sure that "Dr Who" is more of a title than a particular character, so that each new one isn't trying to actually imitate his predecessor, it seems to work out alright without any fan uprisings or revolts, and those who watch, continue watching.
So, my question is, why can Dr Who fans so readily accept new actors in the title role, and even, apparently, different interpretations of the character, the thought of a new Buffy, regardless of whether or not the new actor tries to imitate Sarah's version, raises so much ire among the fans?
