Okay I agree with downloading when it comes to artists you like... you buy their album on the day of release in order to support them but are then confronted by a special edition with extra tracks released a few more months down the line!!!! 🙁
Your edition is reduced in price and shoved in the sale while the new Special edition with bonus cd sits proudly in the charts again 🙁
Also I like to download concerts which are NEVER released on CD so the only means of getting the tracks on CD is to actually download them off the web... 🙂

I download music all the time and i have never really thought about it. i think that its fine to download things (but thats prob cos ive never really thought about it before) but if its like one of your fave artists or something then you should try and buy their CDs and stuff. so i put i do download things but i do feel guilty about it sometimes.

Personally, I think it's important to notice the difference between Musicians and the Music Industry.
Courtney Love calls the Music Industry Thieves. Ozzy Osbourne's wife and business manager says publicly she hates the Music Industry, and advises people to download music. The lead rapper of DMX says he's not going to record any more, because he's sick of the extortion and fraud he feels from the Music Industry.
Many platinum selling recording artists such as TLC and the Backstreet Boys haven't made a nickel from their recording contracts.
In the mean time we the music fans are being forced to pay twenty times what it costs to record a CD. The musicians don't get anything from it, because. they're forced to pay the overhead.
After all this the Music Industry hires a sellout like Britney Spears to stand on television, and tell the fans of music, they are the thieves.
I quess you can tell what option, I voted for.

Funny you should mention TLC because in the height of their success after 'Waterfalls' was released, they filed for Bankruptcy... thats what the music industry does to its artists 😛

I fully support internet downloading. Because of it, I have found a lot more indie artists that I wouldn't have heard if I just listened to the radio or watched MTV. Artists get the majority of their money from touring, not selling records(that goes to the music companies).

I put the second one cause that was the closest one to my answer i guess. I don't download music cause my computer sucks and it doesn't download well. otherwise i would download.

I download but i mean why shouldnt' we they charge like 14 bucks for a cd and what if you dont like all the songs... i dunno i like makin my own cds but i still buy some too so i still do my part...
I have mainly downloaded tracks I've already shelled out cash for as records or cd's so I don't feel guilty at all. Stuff I haven't already bought I downloaded 'cos I'd heard it was good and hadn't caught it on the radio - so it was to see if the album was worth getting (and I probably will buy the Kings of Leon as a result and possibly The Strokes - so they've gained a sale 'cos of downloading mp3's)

There's a lot of debate at the Zeropaid forums concerning "secure filesharing programs". Stuff like are proxied IPs really secure? Is encryption better, or firewalling Industry IPs a la Peer Guardian.
It's interesting. Suppose you could get a 100% unsueable fileshare program like the one they claim they'll come out with soon at thebighack.org. Would filesharing now be ethically correct, if it were more or less legal?
Personally I think it's morally acceptable right now.

I have a 20 GB MP3 server chock full of songs I downloaded from Napster and later Kazaa. I've always felt a little guilty, but about four months ago I started using Apple's iTunes (for Windows XP) which is fully licensed and charges 99 cents a download, so I don't feel guilty at all any more. Plus, I think iTunes is an amazing application...SO much nicer to use than the file sharing programs. I can download a 5 meg song in about 20 seconds, and the connection never drops and I never have to search for more sources from which to download 'cause my source logged off and you can listen to a streaming twenty-second preview of every song they have. And they add thousands of songs every day...their catalogue is HUGE. They don't have every title yet, but they will...

You're paying 99 cents a song, meaning it's about 17 bucks for an album. So there's no real saving, you just get selection of what songs are on the album, then you have to burn it yourself.
Itunes comes with some kind of DRM doesn't it? Meaning you're limited either in what sorts of devices you can play the songs on, how many of copies you can make, or how long they'll last.
The money goes directly to the Music Industry (again I emphasize: not the musicians) doesn't it? As I understand it the musicians rarely get a nickel. How does that make you feel less guilty?
