Since there are so many nationalities here, I thought it would be fun to post some music from the different countries..

Who is famous in your country?
What music is typical for your country?

I can begin myself. In my part of Europe, we listen to something called Yugo-music, and the traditional music is inspired by Turkish music, but the younger generations love it!! (We also call it TurboFolk).
Here is an example: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaFBzYWpGkE[/ame]
- But not everyone loves TurboFolk.. So we also have something more "modern":

These 3 singers have different nationalities, but in the former Yugoslavia, we just listen to what we understand 😀

So.. your turn 😀

Well in england we have a genre of popular music that is collectively known as 'crap' by the population with more than two braincells...

Of course, we're still regularly apologizing for unleashing the Spice Girls, Steps and all manner of other musical, and i use the term in the loosest possible sense, obscenities on the rest of the world...

However, English music does have it's upside... you just have to ignore the current drivel that is being pumped out and glance back about 30 years or so 😀

I love Robyn!
Although Ajla is my neibghour, I have totally different taste in music. My generation does listen music like Milan Stanković, and Serbian turbo folk in general, I'm really not a fan of it. I did liked Severinas work when she was younger, but this things like 'Lola' and 'Gas gas' are really not my thing. I mostly listen to english songs, I like some italian singers, but out of Croatian singers and songs I would point out:

Gibonni:

Tony Cetinski:

Marko Tolja:

Vanna:

Prljavo Kazalište:

Parni Valjak:

Although he's not a Croatian singer, but Serbian I would point out Marchelo!

Great idea of thread! I will listen to the songs you guys posted when I have time. 🙂 I'm from Thailand, but what a shame of me that I don't listen to Thai music much. I love this band's vocal so much. Hope you'll give it a try. Plus, there's karaoke in English for ya. 😀

I live in England. Here's an example of some music we've made that we can be proud of:

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz7IjXu0DfQ[/ame]

Hnh, what are we known for? I have no idea. Rammstein and techno, maybe? lol Though I usually don't listen to either of those. Here are some examples of fantastic, successful German bands, though.

This is "Alles aus Liebe" (it would roughly translate to "Everything out of/because of love") by Die Toten Hosen, probably one of my favourite songs ever. The lyrics (as well as the video) are just too beautiful and haunting - which, uh, is going to be lost to everybody who doesn't speak German. In a nutshell, it's about a someone who loves someone else so much he wants to kill both of them. They usually have one English song per record, though, such as "Pushed Again", the second video I linked.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li2t_XbXaRY[/ame][ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2H8FtlrzCI[/ame]

Then there are Die à„rzte, who are mostly known for being funny, but are actually really observational - often in the same song. I'd say "Schrei nach Liebe" ("A scream for love"), a song against neonazism, is their most well-known song but opinions are going to differ on the subject, especially as probably every child here knows them.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmJUtQeiQzA[/ame]

Of course, we also have bands who sing in English, such as the Beatsteaks, who are just fantastic. This is one their singles.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqlVPaZYOzQ[/ame]

And, last but not least, there is Fettes Brot, a German Hip-Hop band. I just really like them, they're fun.

I know a lot of people who associate Germany with power metal, but that's usually amongst rock and metal fans- don't know to what extent it's true of others.
methos, you Brits have NOTHING to apologize for! You gave us the Beatles! It makes up for anything else. ANYTHING else, you may "unleash".

Volcano is my absolute favourite Damin Rice song ever!
Oh that thread idea is awesome!
So, let me represent Belgium! Or try to. Because you know, Belgium is a complex little country, we have like two countries living in one. When I go to Flanders, I feel exactly like when I'm going to another country. The VIP are not the same, the langage is different, the state of mind, the music...Pretty much everything is different from one side of the country to one other. So I will just make a selection of what I know!

K's Choice is well-known abroad. They even played on Buffy!

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGcuiRkSJnk"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGcuiRkSJnk[/ame]

Puggy is kind of awesome. Funny fact, they played in a festival in Belgium when Incubus was in Belgium. There was a fire during the festival, which had to be cancelled. Puggy had the time to play before the fire. So television broadcast them again and again, their concert was the only one that had been filmed. Incubus saw them in their hotel room and thought "Damned, they have to be pretty famous here if they are everywhere on television. And they are good"
So Puggy toured with Incubus, thanks to a fire. That's an interesting story I think 😀

And Hooverphonic makes the kind of beautiful music you could hear on a show like Buffy! It's a bit like K's Choice. It's one of my favourite! (Yeah, I end with the best)

Oh man, Robyn is great. My favourite song of hers is 'With Every Heartbeat'.
Well, I guess as with any country, there's quite a wide range of genres about in the UK. I share methos's opinion on a lot of the current pop stuff, though XD

Ummm, aside from what people have already mentioned, a lot of early heavy metal bands originate in Britain- to give a few notable examples:

Black Sabbath
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZyVZFJGX5g"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZyVZFJGX5g[/ame]

Judas Priest
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psTUiQzNoxw"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psTUiQzNoxw[/ame]

Iron Maiden
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nba3Tr_GLZU&feature=related"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nba3Tr_GLZU&feature=related[/ame]

There are British bands/acts that I like (fewer "modern" ones, though), but I'm not sure to what extent these are representative of "typical British music". Steeleye Span, Lindisfarne, for example.

As for current stuff, I have no idea what Britain's known for- any ideas?- though I suspect it depends what genre you're into. Someone into rock/metal for example, is likely to have a very different view on what Britain is known for than someone into pop music, or folk, or classical, etc...

I live in America, and I do listen to some famous worldwide artists like Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and the lovely Cher, but I mostly listen to European music because it has alot my favorite bands and singers.

I think we have a lot of good female singer/song writers in Sweden, though I can't claim to are for Robyn.

I like Anna Ternheim though
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8LU8CaC6eM[/ame]

And Sophie Zelmani
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buxrlFoZZUM[/ame]

And Lykke Li of course
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wkDfujp0CQ[/ame]

Also I'm a big metal fan and Sweden does have some of the best metal bands around...

Metal karma!
I'm so bad at catching up with new music. I can find music from 5 years ago to be new... I'll mention a few anyway but I'll skip Abba, Roxette, Army of lovers and Ace of base.

I don't think Moz would forgive me if I didn't mention In flames.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esWqSqSTFa4[/ame]

I am ashemd to say that Basshunter is swedish. I won't post a link though. 😉

Lars Winnerbäck & Miss Li. Buffystyle.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4HbKACpsW4[/ame]

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmNJJ-QWeSk[/ame]

Thanks to google (or something to blame it on) these seems to be some of the most popular swedish songs at the moment. This is of course the things played on radio so don't expect something different.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mnNpf9VzlU[/ame]

Oh man... At least it's made to be silly.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMcEuS2-CuY[/ame]

The winner from our (American) Idol. I haven't watched a minute from this season but he seems very popular.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4Rxq9hBZjg[/ame]

Contestant from 2009 Idol.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WPp20a_3tQ&[/ame]

And last a personal favourite. Most famous probably for Lovefool or My favourite game. Neither close to be my favourite song of theirs. In no way would this be called new music.

The Cardigans are Swedish? I didn't know that!
OMG!!!! I already repped you before I saw Damien Rice and The Corrs in there, too! I love them so much! I've been a big Corrs fan since I was 12 years old and "Forgiven, Not Forgotten" came out. 😀

I am from America but find myself liking a LOT of international artists. I'm a big fan of Robbie Williams, Westlife, The Spice Girls, Oasis, The Corrs, Gary Barlow, U2... When I was in high school I also listened to a lot of B*Witched for those of you who remember them. LOL I've always said I should have moved to Europe a long time ago.
