this may be biased being that most of us get shit from the net...but why not have the discussion anyway

is it stealing...or is it too costly to purchase cd's...

this maybe the golden age of file swapping....so get in yo two cents...
 
neither in my case... because i buy the music i download if the music is in fact good, and i hardly download something that isn't good... actually since napster i'be bought twice or maybe more cd's... i know some people don't do this, but alot do...

the thing is if you download something that is really good, you buy the record whether its to support the artist or to have booklets or whatever.... but if it's not, you shouldn't waste your money

what's ruining the record labes is that new music sucks, period, not all but alot... i mean, for instance, i'm a marilyn manson fan (yeah, yeah whatever), i always buy his records, i download the golden age of grotesque, worst thing ever!, he was on crack when he bought that, not planning on buying it at all.... that's what happens

and if you don't wanna feel bad, think this, for each record sold an artist gets .07 cents, they don't get money from sold records, they win from touring... you support them by buying just because the label may cut them off if they don't sell...

what i do agree is that with cd downloading there's no anticipation, you don't buy the album the first week, the label gets pissed, the band is fired... but i think it's going to change, like movies many years ago, the music industry will evolve soon... because of the poor loyalties artists get from cd sales, because the owner of the music is technically the label, not the artist, hell, you don't buy a movie without watching it, why should you buy an album withou listening to it... it's 15 bucks!!!

totally agree lorne...except for the artist getting 7 cents...its more like 50 cents...but who cares bout cents...i know it builds up


there is one saying that should end this debate....can't fight technology...the horse carriage was instyle until the automobile made it obsolete...

but its not right to just download all the music you want and never buy a cd...buy the cd's that contain special music...

the RIAA is angry because this loosens the control over the music industry....they control the radio and what is played...theoreticallly a band could surpass major labels and sell millions of albums if they make good music...eliminating the middle man...falk ticket master...bitches

point in short...honor good bands...

and lorne...don't be afraid of admittin you listen to Marilyn yo...he's a very clever and misunderstood person....
 
well, on the manson thing i know that, it's not about him being misunderstood or anything, the thing is i'm usually bashed because my friends rarely listen to something that "commercial" for that matter, i don't care about all that anyway...

I actually read on a site that it was 7 cents, and then an artist said it on an interview will promoting downloading music....
but i think it kinda depends on the label, contract and all that...
 
lol...people at my high school wouldn't be against his comercialism...but against his facade of satan worship...

i've learned not to define people by religions..but by the people they are...if you can trust them....i could care less who they worship as long as it aint' a Pseudo-Germani Jesus-Aryan assendency...lol...thats a mouth full
 
haha... i actually decided that i'm gonna respect racist nazi people... because to hate them just based on the fac they are racist is the same as hating someone for their color skin...

i told that to a jew friend, and he almost executed me there...

the people i hang out with don't care if the band vocalist is the incarnation of jesus christ or lucifer himself... but alot of them are against commercial stuff.... i once said i liked some linkin park songs cause i could relate to the lyrics, and i hear about it almost everyday

I hate the music industry with a huge passion. I'm not a disestablishment nut. I don't have a problem with marketing. I just hate that they are marketing image and talent more than the art and the songs themselves.

So why do I say that I dislike the marketing of talent? Because talent isn't what they should be selling. I don't care if a musician is talented. I really could care less. I don't pay money to worship someone's talent, I pay to hear a good and original tune. I love music. I could care less about musicians.

The music industry that has been alive so strongly since the birth of radio has virtually slaughtered the confidence of the common person to make their own music, to sing from their heart, to compete with some multi-millionaire with a fan base of millions. I can't remember the last time I heard someone walking down the street singing for the hell of it, it's considered borderline insane in this day and age. What glamour magazines have done to the average person's confidence in their body, the music industry has done to our confidence in our own voices.

When i want to hear music, I want to hear something new, that was written from the heart. And to tell the truth I'd be just as happy to listen to some girl singing on open-mike night as listening to some guy on the stage of MTV. What I don't want to hear is someone singing a song they can't even personally relate to, or standing on a stage trying to impress us with the 7 octaves of their vocal range or whatever. Vocal gymnastics belong in the Guiness Book, not in our songs.

My biggest beef with the industry is that it maintains careers. It doesn't matter if a song is good anymore, it's all about the person singing it. And somehow we as listeners exist simply to justify their belief in their own great destiny, while they pump out album after album of exactly the same songs they put on the first, but with different words. That's not art.

Art is fresh and new. Art is intangible. Art appears where you don't expect it, and fades from view when scrutinized to closely. Art is a result of the impact between substance and feeling. Art creates a resonance in your soul. Art will be found everywhere you look, and cannot be brought into being by will alone. Art is not about a band named "Rage against whatever comes to mind" and their 'fight against oppression if that's still cool'

I do hope that Piracy kills the music industry dead. I'd really like to see more bands marketting themselves on the internet or whatever for a modest living because it's what they love to do, and not because they'll get layed 24/7 or pull down a cool 10 million a year. I want to hear people express themselves because they have to. I don't want to hear any more out of these bands who try to come up with something new just to justify their lifestyles. I want to go to a bar and see a band I've never heard of playing, and wonder what their music will sound like, knowing that it will at least be their own - and that at one point they felt the emotions they put into words.

Okay here's my 11 cents...

I agree that record sales are down because they are expensive and crap (I'll save my theory on how the deterioration of music quality started with Snoop Dogg for another thread). When I'm on here or talking to someone on MSN or something, and they say, "ooh I'm listening to this new song from band x". I can go download a couple songs and see if I like them and want to buy an album. Like Lorne said, I'm not going to buy it if I haven't heard it. Only mainstream stuff gets played enough on the radio to know if you like it or not. Plus if there's only one good song on an album why should I necessarily buy it? Downloading helps to weed out the crap. Which of course is why record labels don't like it, because people only buy (what they perceive as) the good stuff.

Frankly - what's the difference between downloading a song and recording it off the radio?

Hopefully this will create a return to quality in the music biz...but I doubt it.
 
I am with the masses here, I have ended up buying more music since p2p downloading then before, I dont listen to music on the radio because I dont much care for top 40 radio, and since record stores are no longer a place to find new music, its all now word of mouth and through the net, its real easy to get online and download a few songs and decide if i want to buy it.

ona side note I havent yet seen the pop up warning me against stealing or whatever, I am a collector of OTR and other than trade shows the best way to trade OTR is using Kazaa or eDonkey or other filesharing sources, I know for a fact that 90% of the OTR out there is public domain, so its not stealing, I certainly dont appreciate having a pop up trying to scare me off.
 
I really think downloading to some extent is good. As other people have said you download and then buy the cd. I see if I like it first then buy it as I don't like burning cds because I don't get the lyrics or the artwork which is wierd I know but its me. Also through the internet and downloading a lot of bands gain a reputuation and get noticed and signed or whatever and I know without kazaa and napster I wouldn't have heard of half the bands I now own cds off and am a fan of.
 
perhaps...this is a new age in which music has no business attached...

and khayach...totally right...someone singing just for the hell of it is frowned upon...too bad...people aren't as bad as they think...
 
i don't agree so much with khayach... because i do care about musicians... and i don't think the industry should be killed, that would hurt the good artists, the unknown ones... i think it should evolve, that's what it needs to do

And some of use decide to d/load the whole album after hearing a few good songs ... reasons: prices are too high (I'm like the Dutch Scrooge 😉) and now I can put all the songs I have together on winAmp, which is probably the main reason, as I rarely burn my own music CD's.
