Is anyone tired of the "popular" music trends these days? I'm speaking about:

A. None of Lady Gaga's songs making any sense
B. Ke$ha just seeing about being drunk/high and slutty
c. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Justin Beaver being played on every single radio station at every single moment of the day
D. etc etc etc I'm sure you can think of others

I just think with certain artists dominating everything it is almost impossible for someone to really come out there and do great things. Look at the last winner of Idol, Lee Dewyze, his album only sold 39,000 first week.

Am I the only one who wishes music could revert back to the mid 90s/early 2000s?

I think it's important to also state how old you are when you first post. Becaue you may just have started listening to the radio now and may not have a lot about music. Like how I'm 22 and can talk about music from the 80s til now, but someone who just turned 13 may not know some artists/sounds exist.
 
I'm tired of Lady Gaga and Ke$ha. Mainly Lady Gaga. I'm SOOOO freaking tired of people acting like Lady Gaga's nonsensical lyrics are so profound and moving. She's not a lyrical genius. And she might be good at the piano and she might be good live... but her hyped up dance songs... really suck. I kind of really hate her.

I love Taylor Swift though. I love Taylor about as much as I love Buffy. I don't think her songs are played on every station all the time... but if they were, I wouldn't object at all.

I used to love Lady Gaga. I knew about her a good 6 months before "Just Dance" came out. But since then she kind of sold out. I'm tired of the "art" of covering herself in blood and taping puppies to her head. I'm tired of her stutter-singing in every song and how she is sooo over played. That's what I meant by "being played on every single station every second." Obviously that's an exaggeration but her songs are played at least 100 times a day.
 
To answer your question. I'm not 'tired' of it. I can still listen to songs I love from 2000's, 90's, 80's and so on. Also there isn't just pop music out there. Plenty of genres to get into. 😉 As for the lyrics... Yea well, lyrics aren't everything about songs. Usually when I love a song it's mainly because of the tune, then the singer's voice(sadly lots of auto-tunage now), then the lyrics.

I'm entirely confused about what you thought was good about late nineties music and early 00's? Plenty of it was just as bad as today's music.

Music changes with the times, much like everything else; If you don't like something, you aren't required to listen to it. Turn off the radio, or go with something that suits itself to your tastes, such as Pandora or Sirius. I don't even listen to the radio anymore, because, yes, it is true that I don't like a lot of what is played. I rely on my MP3 player, youtube, etc.

I don't like Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, or Justin Beiber. Lady Gaga I am rather fond of, but I'm not going to get into that. I will say, however, that these people are mostly just fads. In a few years, people won't even know who they are. Everything, including music, switches within the blink of an eye. The greats, the people who have true talent, are always around, are always making money, everybody knows who they are whether they enjoy their music or not. Celine Dion, for example; Has sold millions, if not billions of albums world wide, she has been in the business for the past...20 years? Maybe longer? Everyone knows her name, everyone knows who she is, whether they enjoy her music or not. She has shown that she is not a fad. Meanwhile, most mindless, and in the end, typically talentless, pop artists fade into the background in time.

Or, we'll go back further. MUCH further. Frank Sinatra, whether you like him or not, the dudes a legend, and has been since the 40's. Talent always wins.

Stick it out, listen to the music that you like, try to spread the word about your favourites without forcing it on others. In the end, a new pop sound will always be around, the latest hit, latest artist, but those timeless MUSICIANS; Their talent lives on forever.
 
What kind of music do you listen to? and who are some of the greats in your opinion. i'm always up for a conversation about older music.
 
Are you talking about what is played on the big radio stations? Billboard top 100?

The popular music tends to be catchy and it's the catchy music that gets played on the radio and it creates a vicious cycle of being overplayed and sadly it includes many overrated artists. I don't think this is something that is specific to only today's popular music; Im sure the same could be said for a lot of mainstream 80's, 90's and early 2000 music. Thats why I don't listen to the radio much.
 
My ipod consists mostly of 80's and 90's music. I do think there is good music today but I don't think a lot of truly good songs get airtime.
I think your right about certain artists being played constantly it is like ok that is enough.

This is my mentality towards it unless it was in a movie or television show I watch the only way I will hear it is if I forget my ipod of in a friends car. I only recently had started listening to the radio again already I am losing interest.

Same here. I get all my music from movies, TV shows, or friends. I HATE the radio.
Yeah, I enjoy some of the artists you are referring to. It's easy music to listen and dance to, and sometimes I think that's being overlooked and underrated. Music doesn't always have to be about deep prefound lyrics or inventive use of instruments. Sometimes it can just be about a good beat or a catchy refrain.

I used to work as a editor in chief for a music magazine, and honestly, I got so tired of all these stuck up people in the industry trying to find the strangest, most unheard of indie-electro-folk-pop-whatever artist and hyping it up just 'cause. Music shouldn't be about vainglory or belonging to a certain group/genre/decade, it should be about listening to whatever you enjoy for whatever reason, plain and simple. I know that there's a big appeal of belongning to a certain music culture and consider that to be "real music" and everything else "bad music", but by doing that I really think you're missing out on a lot. It also tends to be a lot of shaming going on in those groups when you ever go outside the "music guidelines", and I don't like that at all. Of course you can have preferences though, that makes the searching for music so much easier for one thing, just don't get stuck in that genre/decade/culture and never look beyond it.

But to make a long answer short - No, I don't think the music should revert in to any decade. I do think that the amount of space some artist take up on the market should be re-distributed though. There isn't a coherent music climate today with just one way of making music evolving, but sometimes it can feel like it 'cause a relative homogeneous group of artists are getting all the attention. That's really sucky, and I think a lot of people would discover a lot of music, both newer and older and from different genres, they really enjoy if they just got the chance to hear it.

This. Exactly! You have no idea how many arguments I've gotten into with people about this and this is my argument. Music shouldn't be a status symbol or about belonging to a genre/decade/culture. It should be about YOU and what YOU like. There's not a single genre not represented on my iPod (except maybe screamo because I don't find the sound of people screaming in my ears particularly pleasing). And I like it that way. My music tastes are diverse... I think way too often people think of themselves in a label and describe themselves by that label therefore using that label to describe their music tastes (because your taste in music really does describe who you are IMO). But they miss the point of music describing who you are. I don't believe anyone actually fits into a label. While society will always try and put us in a label, with our taste in music, we can expand and show that we aren't a label... we're people.

aww, zoà«, you're so right. I'm glad you agree with what I wrote, and it should totally be about being just people. I wish I could karma you, but I have to spread some around before I can give it to you again 🙂

I wish I could karma you but I've given out too much in the past 24 hours... again. This happens at least once a week.
 
Nah. Not there with you. I do enjoy some classical songs, but I do like today's pop.

1. It's not true Gaga's songs make no sense, you just have to listen to them carefuly.
2. Yes, Ke$ha sings about being drunk and slutty, but her songs are awesome for parties.
 
I like Gaga because everyone tries to be like her. And I like her songs too.
But I think Katy Perry is a bit 'slutty'. (I must make it clear, that I love her songs), but her videos can be kinda slutty (Californian Girls).
 
I mostly listen to hard rock music. I also lapse into classic rock. I find these genres dont wear me out as fast as the Top 40 does. I can listen to Renegade by STYX or Rain by Breaking Benjamin on constant repeat. I listen to half of "I want to take a ride on your disco stick" and Im so done.

I like some of Lady gaga's songs, I don't really pay much attention to her lyrics, I just like the way it sounds. I do think it was a little absurd that she made the 100 most influential people list, I don't get that.

Ke$ha ? I am not sure who that is 😛 I know I'm so behind when it comes to music, I think I've heard one song of hers, and I didn't like it cos her is voice is really annoying.

My ipod is basically filled with Queen, The Clash, Kent.. stuff like that

I love Katy Perry. I guess she can be a little slutty, but come on, even I would dance with her in that fountain! ^^
 
People still listen to the radio??

My age = 22+

I'm presently listening to Charley Patton. A pre-war (WWII) blues player from the Mississippi delta. It's taken me years to get into this. An acquired taste as they say. He taught Howling Wolf to play guitar back in the day. A few days ago I was listening to Jelly Roll Morton, a New Orleans piano player from before the same war.

I'm pretty sure there were people back in the 1930's that were horrified about this music, it being odd and new and all sounding the same and stuff. They preferred their pop music, and some of that is still popular today (eg Frank Sinatra). Much of it is forgotten though. The same will happen to today's music. Some of it will hang around, some will be gratefully forgotten and some of it will be loved 100 years from today. People are weird that way.
I don't hear many people recording today that strike me as being eternal icons. Gillian Welch, maybe.
