I like all kinds of music, but my iPod is mostly full of European symphonic metal/ other European music. In my opinion it's better than the music here in America, but I still like some America artists like Cher, Lady Gaga, and Ke$ha because their music is good to dance to.

Nah. Not there with you. I do enjoy some classical songs, but I do like today's pop.

1. It's not true Gaga's songs make no sense, you just have to listen to them carefuly.
2. Yes, Ke$ha sings about being drunk and slutty, but her songs are awesome for parties.

I do love lady gaga i was agreeing more with the Rhianna part. I like lady gaga because she is different but she can sing to me, if you really listen to her.

Kesha doesn't bug me the most out of the people but if you are at a party her songs do seem to be better than some of the other hip hop songs today don't even get me started on those lol.

I like Gaga because everyone tries to be like her. And I like her songs too.
But I think Katy Perry is a bit 'slutty'. (I must make it clear, that I love her songs), but her videos can be kinda slutty (Californian Girls).

I do see a lot of people trying to be like her like she made it cool not like they would admit it. I like Katy perry too but I have always liked her since she first came out she was the only new artist beside Lady gaga that I actually tried to follow.

Actually does anyone feel this way about the hip hop industry as well? I see Drake and Lil Wayne get a lot of airtime but sometimes I just don't see why. It is like he is a phenomenon and every song goes platinum. Drake same thing he is everywhere, I don't think he is all that the only reason I even knew who it was when I heard him was because he was from Degrassi.

Me? Or just everyone in general? Eh...I'm gonna answer it anyway 😉 I really like this topic, FYI. It is nice to see a debate about something other than politics or vegetarians in The Bronze 😛

The greats, for me, include Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, Journey, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Johnny Cash, Aerosmith, Bing Crosby, Motzart. Hell, even though I don't like his music for the most part, I cannot deny that he certainly belongs on this list, Elvis; The list goes on and on, especially for those classic artists. These people were all very influential in the music that came after them, and continue to be very influential, 20, 30, etc years after them. That is what makes them great, and continues to make them great. For me, I can love an artist to death, think their voice is the best around, but they won't be a great in my book unless they are as influential as these people or bands, which I don't feel most people, in the end, are.

As for what I listen to, I listen to a very, very WIDE range of music. From Motzart to Katy Perry, I listen to it all. You'd be amazed to see what is among the 2498 songs on my MP3 player. There's no rhyme or reason to it, it just is. I listen to music based on what I enjoy, what I love, not what is popular or 'in.' I have a supreme love of music that just about outranks my love for everything else. I can sit and listen to music, nothing else, for hours on end and be thoroughly and completely entertained.

Not all popular music is bad but a lot of it is. Most of the stuff about getting high and having sex is just plain boring and pointless. I love Taylor Swift, her songs have meaning and raidio stations where I live only ever play her 'majorly' popular songs. We never got 'White Horse' on our raidios and god help us--when her first album came out New Zealand wasn't even on the shipping list.

The thing I hate is that my country thrives on the popular music. You don't get to hear it unless the Americans liked it first...a lot. Apparently artists I love like Aly and AJ just don't make the cut. It just really irritates me.

But popular music, a lot of it bugs me. Lady Gaga especially (I kind of like Ke$ha). Lady Gaga...god, I never liked her. She makes a big deal of herself to get attention and really just ends up looking like a little kid playing dress up. That's not fashion, that's paper mache. And her music isn't deep or meaningful. It's catchy but it's sexual and not good for the young kids who do listen to it. She keeps saying that she thinks her metaphors are 'genius'. Things like "I'm bluffing with my muffin'--she says she thinks they're amazing. They're not, not for the people who understand them anyway. What happened to good music?

And many of the artists I do like get overlooked. The Pretty Reckless is my favourite band of all time and they barely get any raidio airplay where I live. As I said, Aly and AJ never even got their album released. It just frusterates me.

Probably saying that I wish we could revert back to the 90s was not typing what I meant correctly. What I meant to say was that the 90s is my favorite time period for music, and I wish more of that kind of sound was present today.

Ok, since the majority of you are happy with the sound of music currently, and some don't even listen to radio music anymore...I'll post this question:

Definitely.. I love her songs, and she is a good singer, but I was just too disappointed with the Californian Girls video.. And the whole thing with Sesame Street was not cool.
But hey, I gotta admit I got 4-5 (out of 24) of her songs on my iPod xD

Honestly, I don't think music is in as bad a state as it was say 3-4 years ago. Although, I do wholeheartedly agree about Lady Gaga. Everyone going acting like she invented music is positively head wrecking. She's good, not God.

I'm 23. I pretty much listen to a bit of everything although my core music collection would be 90's rap/hip hop and rock. In saying that I have A LOT of the seminal albums of the 70s too (my mothers influence).

As for music today, my most listened to would be Kings of Leon, Mumford and Sons, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Jay Z, Patty Griffin, Damien Rice, Ray Lamontagne and a few others. Each of those artists are still producing the good stuff as far as I am concerned. Even Eminem, who literally shaped my teenage years, came out with what is arguably, his best album since The Marshal Mathers LP.

Even on the pop scene I think Rihanna is really producing some great stuff. Even kathy Perry, as much as she annoys me, sings great pop songs.

Aaah, music...

I don't listen to the radio and hardly ever watch musical channel. I just don't like hearing the same stuff all day long. Of course there are some songs I like, but sometimes you hear the same song like 5 times in a day, so it gets boring.

I actually like Lady Gaga. I know she's kind of a copy of Madonna but there is something about her I really like. Plus she has a beautiful voice. Okay, you don't really get to hear her beautiful voice when she goes all Bah-ah-ah-ah-aaaah, gaga-oulalaaaaa. But once I saw a video of her live and I was in awe!

I don't really care for the lyrics of her songs, but I generally really like the songs. And the videos (Paparazzi-Bad Romance-Telephone- Alejandro). The others are just meh.
So yeah, I love Lady Gaga!

Katy Perry and Rihanna are okay but sometimes annoy me.
I love Ke$ha's music because it's kind of catchy (Mysterious ticking noise reference, my religion) but the lyrics make me want to slap her. It's just so...dull. The girl has no dignity.

Once I saw a video that was a surprise. When I heard California Gurls, I thought "it sounds so familiar! 😱". Well there is a reason for that, check this out:

Oh, and I also like to listen to the Pussycat Dolls and Britney Spears. Yeah, I know.
I used to 'hate' them because it wasn't 'valuable' music but heck! I love listening to it.

All those musics are commercial music that I like to listen to but I wouldn't want to see those people in concert (except for free).
I think those music are very nice but not...enough, you know?

That's why I always pay attention to music in series because you sometimes hear great new stuffs that you didn't know. The music in Gossip Girl, in Veronica Mars and in Skins are amongst my favourite.

I also have friends (more like A friend actually) who always makes me discover new stuff. "You should listen to Florence and the Machine, it is just A-MA-ZING!" "I think you might like Dragonette!" "LISTEN TO METRIC, it's great!". She always know those stuff before they actually become famous.

I think I'm falling in the eclectic category. In my mp3 you can find...Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Muse, The Killers, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bob Geldof, The Beatles, Les Ramoneurs de Menhir, Danny Elfman, Sniper, 50 cent, Eminem, Tupac, Missy Elliot, Ciara, Chrystal Castle, Dragonette, Martin Solveig, Hadouken!, Millionaires, Marylin Manson, Peterpan Speedrock, New Young Pony Club, Florence and the Machine, Rihanna, The Pussycat Dolls, Prokofiev, Grieg, Saint-Saà«ns, Mika, Mr Oizo, Peaches and so many more!
You got the idea 😉

I like commercial music but I also need more 'serious', deep music. Some music just cheer me up, some make me want to dance, some help me find what I'll wear the next day, some inspire me, some wake me up...It really doesn't matter to me weither it's commercial or not!



To answer your second question, I really like the 70's and the punk, it's a subject that really fascinates me but I also love the music of my time!

That's when I talk about the music only. But if I think about the videos that goes with and how it socially affects people...My favourite time is definitly the 90's, when I was a kid.
At the time, you could be sexy without being extremly slutty.
Look at Christina Aguilera.

And unfortunately, it has a big impact on many teenagers. I don't mean to put everybody in the same box but I'm always shocked to see how many girls I see in the street being high heels and mini-skirts, and too much make up and everything. It never last forever, it's more like a phase, but really, it's...UGH.

I'm quite open about sexuality, but I don't get the impression to watch video clips, it looks more like soft porn. And that is my biggest issue. Not the commercial music. Not the heard-so-many-times tunes.
No, what really bothers me is all the marketing behind. Sex is omnipresent in this industry, and it really gives me the sad impression that many artist have more succes for their sexiness than for their talent, you know what I mean?

I hate the music that's played on the radio, but I don't think that it is any worse than music was at any other time in history.

Music that's played on the radio has always been the same catchy pop music that appeals to the largest amount of people (which means different age groups as well), which in my opinion, usually makes for horrible music. It's meant for children as well as different kinds of adults. Other types of music are usually for a more specific group. An older person usually wouldn't like a younger persons punk rock, while the teenager wouldn't like the older person's classical music. So the things that end up on the radio are usually just catchy songs that the majority people wouldn't mind listening to on their way to work.

If you look at the 90's, what did you have on the radio? Backstreet Boys? Spice Girls? Only difference I see between them and the music now is the quality of auto tune and electronic music has increased. If I had the choice I'd want to grow up in the 70's for punk, or have been around for grunge. This doesn't mean the music then was any better, they still had the same stupid music on the radio, it's just personal preference. I'm sure there will be people in the future who would have wanted to live in this time for some other random music genre(i don't know what's popular underground today), but I doubt it would be for Lady Gaga(as then they'd probably like the popular music in their own era).

I don't really like Ke$ha. But I like some Lady Gaga songs. I just don't like the sound from Ke$ha. Most of the music I like, doesn't have all that sounds that they use for Ke$ha or like Lady Gaga. You can actually hear instruments in the songs.

I heard Lady Gaga for the first time a few weeks ago. Poker Face does have a catchy hook. lol Can't say I've ever heard Christiana Aguilera, Ke$ha, Rihanna, or Katy Perry, nor do I really want to.

I'm 44. I was into Zeppelin, Styx, Beatles and other classics until the day that I first heard Oingo Boingo. Then a year later, in 1982 I heard my first punk song, "White Trash (Second Generation)" by Bad Religion and I was hooked. My love of punk has never ended.

The 80's, 90's, and 00's all had great music. Sometimes it wanes a little, but there's always great music out there if you look. Someone mentioned Metric. I love them, and have for years! What an amazing band. But that band I absolutely love, more than any other current band, is The Action Design. I'll post a video below. I've loved the lead singer since her days in Tsunami Bomb, my favorite punk band of the 00's. I saw them last year in a little club with about 10 other people. I was in heaven!

There are so many great punk and non punk bands, and thanks to the internet, it is so easy to find. People my age seem to get stuck listening to the music of their high school years, so most of my "music friends" are much younger. I mean how the heck can you listen to nothing but classic rock for 20+ years? YUCK!!!!

the music industry hasn't been about 'the music' in so long it's become a joke... i mean, just look at the karaoke Tv shows that are oh so popular nowadays... X-factor, talent whatever... they're all just exactly the same shtick rammed down everyone's throats again...

I don't really care who sings it. If it's enjoyable, that's what I care about. I actually like Kesha. Her songs aren't all about getting high or drunk... There are a few, but then there's dancing with tears in my eyes. I love that one.

Honestly, I loved 90s pop like no other. I still do. I'm 22 by the way.

I think the last great band to come out in music was The Beatles, and I'll always stick to that. They were a revolution unmatched before or since. And their music is still relevant and it's still the right genre for today's pop music. I feel like just now, decades later, is music going the way of The Beatles, in some manners. No other band has done what they did, and with good reason. No band has ever been that amazing in such a short time.

I'll shut up about the Beatles now...

Queen, I adore. Love them. But they still can't touch The Beatles.

If you like the Dollyrots, check out Tsunami Bomb and Go Betty Go. Both are great bands similar to the Dollyrots.

I've never really liked anything similar to As I Lay Dying except A7.
