I am pretty easy when it comes to music. So I like to listen to a variety. I do not like Metal at all tho and I only like a few country songs here and there. That's about it. I don't really have favorite bands or artists. If you have a good song, then I am going to listen to it. 🙂
 
It's easier to say what I don't like: rap, metal, disco, bluegrass, and angst rock. Outside those subgenres, I listen to a little of everything - and there are exceptions even within those subgenres (although, if I never heard another rap/hip-hop cut again, I'd be a happy camper...)

Symphony X, an amazing progressive metal band from New Jersey. With massive classical influences, great for anyone with an open mind.

After the release of Michael Romeo's demo tape, The Dark Chapter, Symphony X was formed in April 1994. Besides Romeo, the original lineup included keyboardist Michael Pinnella and drummer Jason Rullo. The same year saw the band recording their self-titled debut. This was followed eight short months later by their tremendously received second album, The Damnation Game, which featured the new singer, Russell Allen, for the first time.

They made a huge leap up the ladder in Autumn 1996 with the release of The Divine Wings Of Tragedy, which was especially well received in Europe, and which received high placing in the Readers' Polls of Europe's most important music magazines. Accolades such as 'the best Progressive Power Metal band in the world' and 'the best Progressive Metal album of the year' were heaped onto Symphony X. March 1998 saw the release of their fourth studio album Twilight In Olympus, and the band's first, eagerly awaited concerts.

Their fifth studio album, V - The New Mythology Suite, took Symphony X on a European tour in Autumn 2000. During the tour, they recorded their live double album, Live On The Edge Of Forever, in the legendary Paris venue Elysee Montmartre. The live album was released in October 2001, which documented the huge technical capabilities of the five band members.

With their sixth studio work and latest release, The Odyssey, Symphony X united recognized progressive elements and their clean, sharp melodic vocals with a somewhat harder, rawer production. "The lyrics of 'King Of Terrors' are based on a novel by Edgar Allen Poe", says Romeo. "We had the feeling that this dark, heavy song needed dark spooky lyrics. Edgar Allen Poe is perfect for stuff like this." But the proof that this heavier sound has not completely buried the band's more melodic and epic side is documented in 'Accolade II'--the continuation of the song 'Accolade' from the 1996 album, The Divine Wings Of Tragedy; as well as the title track, divided into seven chapters with a total length of 29 minutes. In a breathtaking musical trip through the Greek Odyssey, Symphony X have put to music such stages as the Sirens' song ('Sirens'), the conquest of Circe ('Circe (Daughter Of The Sun)'), the perilous sea journey ('Scylla And Charybdis') and finally the arrival at Ithaca ('The Fate Of The Suitors / Champion Of Ithaca'). In order to realize their visions of an exciting and deliberately harder album, Symphony X took over almost all the work on The Odyssey; the songwriting and arranging, the pre-production and the work in the studio was all firmly in the musicians' hands. "It needed a hell of a lot of energy, but it was definitely worth it", Romeo says with satisfaction.

The band's seventh studio release, Paradise Lost, was released on June 26, 2007.
 
Ooh some interesting choices here! 🙂
  • I am a big fan of most things Mike Patton does - the man is just such a talented vocalist and he's not known as the man of a thousand voices for no reason... opera, metal [growling, screaming], rock, ska, jazz, rap, beatboxing - he's done it all, and to an exceptionally high standard.

    Faith No More will always be my favourite band of his, but Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, his collaborations - just incredible. Seeing Peeping Tom live last year was a dream come true!
  • Hell Is For Heroes are such an underrated British band; they've been going at it for years and are moderately well-known, but they really do deserve to be much bigger. They are the most energetic band I've ever seen live... I've already seen them twice this year, and they're touring again in October. Woo 🙂

Currently, I'm on an insane Arcade Fire riff, largely owing to the fact that I've finally gotten to see them live and they are, impossibly, even better than people say. You hear people mutter about them being overhyped, but the truth is that there actually isn't enough hype in the world to do them justice. The world's limited supply of hype is just stretched too thin to cover them, and it's terribly unfair. They're life changing, seriously.

To be fair, I think they should have considered touring the Neon Bible songs a bit more before they recorded and broken them in a bit, because some of the tracks that burn up the place live come across a little flat on the disc. My Body is a Cage, for instance, is just.. baffling... to put on the album right after No Cars Go, but live, when the big boom hits, it's like having a good heart attack. Everybody should own Funeral. It should be like... a condition of citizenship or something.

I'm getting to see them again in October, but tickets sold out in 3 minutes and my friends still need 'em. Currently the going scalper rate is €200 and rising. My plan is to disguise my friends as instruments and pretend I'm in the band. There's like 53 people in the band anyway, security won't notice one more.

Other than that... I found Interpol's new album distinctly underwhelming. It's just Heinrich Manouvre and some other less good songs. Meh. Boxer by The National is good, but I think it was a bit overhyped. It's just good, it doesn't blow my mind or anything.

Tell you what is brilliant though - Beirut's Gulag Orkestar. Fantastic name, fantastic album. All weird trumpets and ukelele's. I know I'm late to the party on that one, but I cannot stop listening to the damn thing.

My main love is "Skate Punk" for want of a better description.


I could list a hundred bands I like, but I'll narrow it down to my top 10, and a few others that aren't in the same genre but have been favourites of mine in the past.

If you like Green Day or Blink 182, do yourself a favour and check out the below bands. Less hype, better songs.

Anyone watch the Mercury Music Prize this year? Bat For Lashes wuz robbed! I like Klaxons, I've seen them live a few times, but I do think that overall, Bat For Lashes deserved it better. And the Klaxons dudes, much as I love 'em, were a bit annoying when they were accepting the award. I really didn't expect Klaxons to take it though.
 
I'm weird and like lots of different types of music; my favourite singer is probably Michelle Branch, so it was cool to see her in Tabula Rasa [She was also in Charmed] 😛

The Q Daily / Featured Feature / Q Awards nominations announced

Not that awards mean anything, but they're always a fun conversation.

Foo Fighters, to me, have been essentially coasting on Dave Grohl's CV for years now. Manic Street Preachers are just... well, they make me sad. They aren't strong enough. They either aren't as angry or aren't as driven as they think they are, or something. They just seem spent to me. Kate Nash deserves every bit of recognition she can get though.

But me, I love a live show, and from the live nominations, babbling zealot as I am, Arcade Fire should have it in hand. Killers and Kasabian are both polished, but they don't engage their crowds. Arctic Monkeys just play their album a bit louder. Muse... well, actually, they put on a monster of a show that really has to be believed. They actually kinda deserve it too. I'm not a huge Muse fan, but for sheer spectacle, they're crazy. Arcade Fire make their audience part of the show though, and that's worth more to me than all the little inflatable Muse balloons in the world.

Anyway, any thoughts? And why the hell are Kaiser Chiefs up for best album? YT,AM was really dull...

The demo of Rugby '08 that we have running in the shop has Howling Bells' Low Happening on it. On the upside, it means I get to listen to a good song. On the downside, it breaks my brain that Howling Bells would become inextricably (to me) associated with a Rugby game on the PS2. Weird. Whatever about Bloc Party on Fifa...
 
Yesterday, I met Leslie Feist.

It was the coolest thing that's ever happened to me.

Actually, second coolest, after the time I sold that PSP to A WOMAN WITH NO HANDS!!! But still pretty damn cool. FEIST, people!

She's lovely, btw.
