After reading another post in a different section of Buffy-boards.com, I wanted to know if others agreed with me on my theory.

Buffy's death in Prophecy Girl called Kendra, thus making Kendra the active Slayer and not allowing Buffy to call another one. And Buffy once again dies in The Gift, but no other slayer is called. This is because she used up her power to call another Slayer.

But in S6 she is re-inserted into the Slayer line and receives this ability once again. But in the end of S6, she flat lines and again uses her power to call another Slayer, because she was after all technically dead, once again.

So another new Slayer was called? Possibly. And its easily assumable that we knew nothing because maybe the Council knew nothing. This may have been cloaked because of the existence of already two chosen ones.

But this makes sense since we see the First start to attack at the beginning of S7. Now its highly logically that The Gift could have caused these events, but I think Mr. First is a lot smarter than that and would have realized it in S6 and started his/her/it's little vendetta long ago.

What do you think?

It seems logical what you're saying but I though the popular thought was that Joss said that the slayer line now lies with Faith and not Buffy?

Otherwise why didn't a new slayer pop up after the gift? and season six's finale (I can't remember the name)?

I know in Season 7 Buffy kept saying that the SITs wouldn't be called unless she dies but I think she could have died once again and still no slayer would be called. The cotinuance line is with Faith and not Buffy anymore. Though she still retains the power.

Interesting theory.

So you mean, that when Buffy came back in Bargaining, it was like she had never died at all? And so then when she "almost dies" (like Prophecy Girl) in Villians, this would have called another? (My brain...so small)

Maybe the First didn't make himself known in S6 is because he was building up his army, getting Caleb to do his dirty work and killing Potentials with the use of the bringers but Buffy and co were wrapped up in their problems so they didn't notice.

Maybe they didn't think of the storyline until S7.

I believe the first had this plan set in motion from S3...he was setting his pieces up for the big finish with Amends...things just didn't go as he planned. What I don't get is why they went away so easily for 4 years after that eppie.

Actually it wasn't just Buffy who said that. In Chosen there's this:

CALEB/FIRST
Then why aren't you asleep in your
dead lover's arms?

She looks over at Spike, doesn't answer.

CALEB/FIRST
'Cause he can't help you. Nor Faith,
nor your friends... certainly not
your little wannaslay brigade. None
of those girlies will ever know real
power unless you're dead.

I'm going to assume the First knows how the slayer line works at that point in the story.

Also I can't help remembering Joss Whedon wrote Chosen. I'm going to assume he knows how the slayer line works too.

But he also said at a convention the line runs with Faith. Ask that xxslayerxx person he/she'll tell you all about it. Also despite the fact Joss wrote "Chosen" he always had a hand in the Buffy shows yet none of the other times Buffy died did a slayer pop up...the gift? flatlined in s.6?

Yes, I've heard the story of the "a slayer is like a battery" quote. I've never been able to see the actual story though, because they never post a link. I hear it predates Season 7, and in my mind at least that is a significant arguement against the current validity of the quote (presuming it actually exists).

There's also a Marty Noxon quote that says the slayer line runs through Faith. It does exist, (I can find a link if you like) and it does predate Season 7.

Things changed in Season 7. Beljoxa's eye, The First Evil through Caleb, and Buffy say so.

And "Joss wrote 'Chosen' he always had a hand in the Buffy shows"...what are you joking me. Joss Whedon is Buffy. Joss Whedon is the last and final, one, true and only canonical truth on anything Buffy or Angel.

I don't know who XxSlayerxX is.

Exactly so if Joss "always had a hand in"/ "is buffy" (write it however you want based on your fanaticism) then surely he would correct anything that didn't fit in properly with the buffyverse i.e. make sure another slayer was activated when Buffy died. He didn't which is telling us something other than the slayer line runs with Buffy....

I believe that the change in the slayer line is what caused The First to make their move but that is of course just "my extremely short hypothesis" .

edit:xxslayerxx is a poster who keeps bringing up the "battery" quote.

You think if I was really nice to him or her, he or she would post a link? I'd really like to see how old the quote is, what the context was, and verify that it actually exists so I know where it fits in in my Buffology studies. 🙂

Interesting theory...

I would think that with Buffy's habit for dying, there'd be a ton of Slayers poppin around... but there wasn't. So I agree with an earlier poster that the line as to be with Faith, who doesn't die repeatedly and come back....

I don't think that when Buffy came back in season 6 she regained the slayer line. When she died in season 1, Kendra was called. When Kendra died, Faith was called so the slayer line lies with her. I don't understand why Buffy coming back to life would make the line go through her again.

Just an interesting side note/question. I wonder why Joss killed Buffy a few times but never Faith. It's a good trick to catch our attention and open up new story lines but that was never the case with Faith. I wonder if he's trying to say that Faith was strong than Buffy or...what?

Yea, I think the slayer line ran through Faith, and that the first was preparing and waiting for things to get really corrupted or something during season 6.

Buffy did a lot more saving the whole world than Faith, which I suppose put her in some more danger than Faith..

He deffinatly wasnt trying to say that Faith was stronger since Faith hasnt gone up against half the big bads that Buffy has. The only reason why Faith survived was because A. she ran away from Kissing toast and B. she was locked up for most of her time as a slayer. Buffy was already propheized to die in Season1, and she chose to kill herself in The Gift.

But I think he liked the charecter of Faith so he wanted to keep her around and she still had room to develop as a charecter and not to mention that it would take away from Buffys limelot a little. But I think he also killed off Kendra to quick.

But in the end, Joss set up the future that is Fray, when Faith dies there will be no true slayer called to the line for a couple hundred years.

i like this theory, Slayer, the. it's really got me thinking. i so agree with you, about buffy's 'death' at the end of S6. this occurance really could have triggered the first to makes its move. just because we didn't see a new slayer called, doesn't mean there wasn't one. buffy didn't have much, or any, contact with the watcher's council after 'checkpopint' in S5, so they couldn't have known buffy died, so they wouldn't have been looking for a new slayer.
it's interesting to think, that if this is true, and buffy DID called another slayer, who that girl was. was it one of the potentials?
how else could amanda have taken out a vamp solo without ANY training at all? :bluewink:

Same way all the other human charecters on the show take out vamps. Cordy took out a vamp in Graduation and well she didnt have any training.

I don't think that the First Evil began its attack due to the events of the "The Gift" only. I think that the combination of both Buffy's resurrection and Spike's ensoulment led to the First's attack in S7. It's only purpose wasn't to simply destroy the Slayer line. I believe that it wanted to achieve solid state via Buffy's body . . . once she got her hands upon the scythe. At the same time, it did not want both Buffy and Spike to achieve what they finally did in "Chosen" - change the Slayer line and close the Sunnydale Hellmouth.

we don't know that this WAS the first time cordy took out a vamp. she may have staked a vampire offscreen, we just didn't see it. and she had been hanging with the scoobies for two years at the time of 'graduation day'.
whereas, amanda fought and staked that vamp after finding out vamps were really less than an hour before, without any traing whatsoever.
