My "Invisible Girl" Theory

So, I've seen a lot of people have wondered about the ending to "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" especially considering it was never mentioned again. I was watching the episode and I thought of something: the end was a cop-out, a really good cop-out, but one none the less.

Here's why. What were the possible endings? Invisible Girl going to jail? But that would mean the public would have to learn the truth about the supernatural. Have her turn visible with some magic spell? Well, we can't expect her to go on living a normal life now after she's MURDERED a couple of people, now can we. And of course, it couldn't end with Buffy killing her, because she was just human after all.
 
I guess I don't really understand what you are trying to say.

I was always the impression that Macie was going into an FBI/CIA kind of thing, to be that 'missing gunman'. Did anybody else get that idea?

I got the same impression.
Yeah I can see where you are coming from, It was kind of a cop out, but I am sure that they could have thought of something else if they really watched to. But I also like the fact that it also cements the government knowing about the supernatural, I remember when season 4 started, and lots of people where complaining that the government knew about the supernatural, whereas it has been there since season 1!

Good point BEG! I never did think about that, with the government knowing about the supernatural. It makes season four more relevant if you think about it. The government knew about the other-worldly and tried to contain/use it for their own purposes.
 
Wow. That's crazy. I never thought about the government's involvement in this episode either. And by the way it was mentioned briefly in season 6 when Buffy gets shot by the invisible gun. Xander says something like "Are you feeling not noticed" or something like that. Then Buffy says that it isn't a Marcy (I think that was her name)thing.
 
AAAH very very good point you brought up there. Definitely sets up for later seasons! 🙂
 
It was a "common" ending for an invisible person... I don't exactly remember in which TV show it was, but there was also an invisible man that ended in a special government training camp...
 
But wasn'tarcies turning invisibl more of a physics thing than a supernatural thing, thats the impression I always get from what Giles says

Not really, she was feeling ignored and the mystical energy from the Hellmouth made her that way, because she was feeling invisible.
 
Well I have a theory that everyone in Sunnydale knows that something isn't quite normal there, but just doesn't talk about it. There are several examples, such as in 'School Hard', when Snyder is talking to the police after the raid...he makes it quite clear that he knows what's going on, but tells them to put the usual excuse (gang related, PCP).
Also in Season Seven, when everyone leaves Sunnydale...you kind of get the feeling that everybody knows...
So what I'm saying is that the government are aware of the supernatural ocurrences, and just use it to their advantage. Marcie was probably trained to be an invisible assassin!
 
yeah true AT, why else would they be leaving if they didnt know....hummm unless the gov told them earthquake coming or somthing....na there not that in denile..... i was suprised marcie didnt turn up in any other episode....hummmm so maybe one of there agents kill john lennon....

It was actually mentioned again. I cant remember what the episode was called but in season 7 when things were getting bad and peoples heads were exploding etc, there was a girl who was starting to turn invisible.

I liked the end though. I didnt think it was a cop out at all. it shows that there doesnt have to be a supernatural answer to everything. No magic spell to bring her back or keep her contained. Just the government using her as a weapon to kill people.

i think season one had a lot of misleading endings that lead you to believe that it would be followed up, but it never was. like, at the end of 'teachers pet' and 'the witch'. you see the mom is trapped in the statue, but she may come back or something cause her eyes are moving. she never does though. and at the end of 'teacher's pet', there is an egg that hatches, but you never see any more of that either.

Yeah, i always hoped she'd come back. She could have fit quite well into Angel, like you said, DDM, in Wolfram and Hart.

Yeah, it would have been cool actually in about season 3 with a Cordy(pre powers)/Marcie standoff showing us a fuller transition of the characters from season 1 Buffy, just before Cordy is screwed over.
 
So many possibilities. Like hiring Faith to kill Angel, they could have hired Marcie too (not at the same time)
 
At the same time could have been cool. marcie tapping on Angels shoulder as a distraction, faith with a crossbow. could've been awesome.

Missed oportunity or what! lol
