I just finished "The Prom" and the one thing I distinctly remember was the hellhounds, partly because their so hideous looking. But I feel like a lot of the emotionally heavy aspects of this episode were something I was experiencing for the first time. For example, when Angel is straight with Buffy about their relationship, or lack of one, and breaks up with her. I don't even remember watching that scene at all.
It was interesting to see Buffy's heart and head wrestling; she knew Angel was right about their lack of a future together, but Buffy would always no matter what, have an intense love for him.
Another particularly effecting scene was Buffy telling Willow everything and it contained Buffy's heartfelt confession that she was having trouble even breathing at the thought of her & Angel being apart. I must just be more invested in the characters this time around because there are some really crucial scenes or moments that I don't recall ever seeing. I was really invested in this scene & my heart hurt for Buffy a lot. It actually made me recall a similar situation I was in at one point in my life. And, finally, Buffy gets awarded the "Class Protector" & it feels like a nice way to bottle-up Buffy's high school social achievements.
One thing I find kinda funny occurs when Angel shows up at the prom and tells Buffy that this night wasn't going to signify getting back together. I just found it funny because it seemed to me like something the writers had to include so idiot viewers wouldn't foolishly think that the series was
going to abandon the profound truth of their "doomed" relationship in exchange for a lighter, happier ending where all of Buffy's worries are put to rest. lol

I think that line was a simply a classic line at the end of a relationship.
I mean, they broke up but he shows at Prom and he sees the look on her face...no matter what, he has to tell her they're not getting back together. Besides, I think that at that point, after the Willow scene and the sewer scenes, Bangel fans pretty much got it was over.

I think this episode is perfection. I could've done w/o the hell hound storyline but other than that, I love seeing the gang all dressed up & really enjoying their night. The scenes with Buffy & Angel are amazing & when he shows up at prom, it just made my heart drop. I love the music in this ep too. Also when Buffy wins the Class Protector award, I thought that was one of the sweetest moments for her. She deserved that & never thought anyone would appreciate her that way.

this episode is so sad. I also watched it again yesterday and like AbraxasP3, there are a few scenes, especially at the beginning, that I didn't remember very much. These scenes at the beginning of the episode are very good because while they show how much they love each other, they already foreshadow all the reasons why they have to break up!!! for example, she complains about the lack of mirrors at Angel's, he can't go out during the day, he must get so bored!!!* So all through this episode, I feel heart-broken!! the scene when she starts crying in front of Willow has me in tears and of course the ending!!! the Class Protector Award was a moving moment too!! when you finish high-school, you kinda wish you will be remembered for something...so yes, that was nice for her that her heroism is noticed by other students!!!

* something that struck me as odd yesterday when Mrs Summers goes to see Angel is that he's not working!!!another reason why their relationship is doomed! he must be so bored, having nothing to do, no purpose in life! Buffy is going to college, she's moving on with her life, he has too!! it's sad but true!

I find myself feeling that way about a lot of episodes on Buffy, every time I re-watch it's like I discover new aspect of the show. I feel like it's just me that changes in between viewing so I see things differently.

I remember at the time I saw the episode (my memory is cloudy since it was so long ago), I didn't event take the break up seriously because it wasn't the first time they broke up. I do however remember thinking that her winning class protector award was one of the most touching thing ever.

I just rewatched this episode yesterday, and I love it. It's one of those episodes that I admittedly don't think about alot, unlike the really classic episodes which tend to really stick with me, but when I watch it the emotional stuff really hits me. Buffy crying in Willow's lap is so realistic and heartbreaking. And isn't the scene where Buffy is awarded "Class Protector" one of the most perfect and most touching moments in the entire series? I have to confess that I always shed a few tears during that scene. Happy tears, though. It was just so nice to know that everything Buffy had done hadn't gone unnoticed. 🙂

This episode is just beautiful. I tear up everytime during the speech at the end and Buffy accepting her price. One of the show's finest moments. And doesn't Willow look gorgeous in that dress? 😀
