My thoughts on Sarah Michelle Gellar, having never seen her as Buffy.

As a few people on these boards know, I'm going to be reviewing each episode of Buffy as I watch them for the first time, giving my neutral, modern-day opinions on the series. Before the series arrives, I thought it would be interesting to give you my opinion of Sarah Michelle Gellar, having never seen her in her defining role of Buffy Summers. 🙂

I am quite ashamed to say that I've watched Gellar starring in her most recent series, Ringer, having never seen her in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Apart from the ratings-challenged Ringer (which I actually quite enjoyed), I have only seen her in the two Scooby-Doo films, her brief role in Scream 2, and in I Know What You Did Last Summer - which was released a short time after Buffy began airing in 1997.

My thoughts on Gellar as an actress are most certainly mixed. At times, I feel she can convey the emotions of a scene fairly well; mostly in high-octane action scenes, such as her chase-scene in Summer and certain episodes of her latest drama. Luckily, I believe that Buffy features a number of action scenes throughout each episode/season, which bodes well for her acting prowess in the series. I also believe that she is generally a convincing actress (I often feel as though Gellar was born to play Helen Shivers in the aforementioned I Know What You Did Last Summer). Her likability, wit and genuine good-looks are usually always the apex of whatever project she may find herself in quality-wise.

However, there are also numerous times that I feel as though she puts little excitement into her roles, often coming across as though she's simply not invested in the storylines. This trait was most noticeable in Ringer, in which she had to play two separate roles as the twin sisters Siobhà¡n and Bridget. At times, Bridget came across as being entirely emotionless - an oddity considering the situation in which she finds herself. While I enjoyed the series, and loved seeing Gellar each week, I feel as though playing two characters perhaps diluted her performance slightly. This is, however, not entirely Gellar's fault as an actress, but rather that of the show's mediocre-at-times writing.

The above contrasts can only lead me to one conclusion: I am going to really, really enjoy seeing Gellar in the role of Buffy Summers. The series itself contains a large quantity of action scenes - which, from what I've seen, offer some of Gellar's greatest performances. In addition, there's only one character that the actress needs to focus on, rather than the two in Ringer. Surely this means that with her excellent persona, generally strong acting ability and natural beauty, Gellar should excel in the role of a vampire slayer? If the rabid and loyal fanbase are anything to go by, I'm sure that Gellar not only played Buffy Summers well - but that she was Buffy Summers.

I don't want to spoil anything for you but I think you'll be surprised, especially in the later seasons. 🙂

Neat. 😀 Part of the reason I'm writing about my thoughts before I begin the series is that I can look back on them later on and see how wrong I was. That, and I'm sure it's quite fun for long-time fans when I say something completely silly because I don't know anything about the storylines yet. I wrote about what I already know about the series earlier, and I'm sure most of the things on that list are completely bogus as well. 😱

Just go into it knowing this:

BANGEL. It's the superior ship.

That is all.

(I'm fairly certain that would be a non-spoiler if you've ventured onto here. My apologies if it isn't. But it is the best ship.)

Interesting thoughts! I'll be looking forward to reading your blog on the rest of the series. 🙂

Thank you, I'll be posting my thoughts on each episode in a thread here as well, so that people can follow or discuss it if they wish. 🙂

I'm not quite sure what that's in reference to, but if it is a spoiler for the Buffy series, I hope I forget it before it becomes relevant. 🙂

It's not a spoiler, it's just the prelude to Spuffy, as all true fans know.
Out of curiosity, how are you managing on here? there are spoilers everywhere, and not just in threads but icons, signatures etc. Just kind of wilfully ignoring them and peering through your fingers at the screen? 😀

To be honest, I have no idea. 😀 I don't visit sub-forums that I know will feature direct discussions about plot points, at least not for later seasons. When I'm on the main forum page, there is a lot of looking through my fingers and squinting to blur the screen as I make my way to my destination, but it's okay overall. 😛 As for the icons and signatures offering spoilers, I either have avoided the serious/obvious ones, or just haven't recognised them as spoilers due to my lack of knowledge in the series.

Good luck avoiding the spoilers. :)
Can I ask, why did you decide to watch Buffy? What is the show to you?

I'm always fascinated to hear how the show is perceived by those who have never seen it.

Me too! I love hearing a nebwie's reaction, and reading/listening to reviews is like rewatching for the first time vicariously.

Lol it becomes relevent almost immediately, and will totally make sense soon. I promise. Good luck avoiding spoilers though, like xaphania said, they are everywhere!

Rest assured, the furry puppy cows are not a spoiler. Although they may be the only thing that could make the show more awesome. I hope you like it!!!!!!!!!

I think you can prepare to be really pleasantly surprised! I watch BTVS as it aired (so until I was around 11) and when I did my first rewatch around 16, I did not remember Sarah Michelle Gellar to be an amazing actress. Not bad, but nothing to rock my socks.

Then I rewatched BTVS from the beginning and was really happy to see how amazing her acting is. Wether she plays tragic, sad, pissed off, comedy, she's always absolutely brilliant. That was the most articulate thing I could say, considering the fact that most of the time, I think her acting as Buffy is so good that it just lets me be like "ashfkdbchjeds, okay? "

Believe it or not, that's actually the topic of the post that I have planned for tomorrow. 😀 I had quite a negative pre-conceived notion about Buffy as a franchise up until a couple of months ago. I'll go over what changed all of that tomorrow. 🙂

Cool, I hope I can avoid spoilers as much as possible, I'd like to go into the series completely blind. 🙂

That's good to know, I'm glad that Gellar is good in the role, especially considering I'll be watching her in it for so long. 🙂

One last word of advice (and then I'll leave you alone so you remain spoiler free)

The fashion has NOT aged well. Please don't let that hinder you. Cause a lot of it is hideous.

I look forward to following your blog!

You might want to consider the fact that, after Season 3, the series "Angel" spins off from "Buffy," and there are some crossovers and references to it, so beginning "Angel" Season 1 along with Season 4 and alternating between the two series might help in keeping track of what's going on. It's not absolutely necessary, but it will help in keeping track of the goings on in the Buffyverse.

That's fine, I can find that pretty fun at times. As long as the series itself hasn't particularly aged, I should still enjoy it just as much as I would have in 1997. Thanks for the heads-up though. 🙂

Yeah, I've spoken to people about this. I think I might try and get Angel before I finish season three of Buffy. Thanks. 🙂

Action scenes are far from Gellar's best work. Her drama scenes are probably the highlight. She is among the top actresses of our time IMO. You'll really enjoy her in BtVS 🙂

SMG is hands down one of the best actresses of her generation, to compete with Kate Winslet in my opinion. Too bad she's typecast. If you give her time to work on a character she can really work magics.

I have mentioned in a few posts that I don't think she ever put a foot wrong in 'Buffy', but most (not all) of what she is known for outside of BtVS is fairly insubstantial. On the bright side, it does mean that anyone watching her as Buffy is going to have their socks blown off if they have only seen her in other things. Enjoy!

Sarah Michelle Gellar is Buffy Summers. They are linked in absolutely every way in my mind. I find that is half the problem when I see her in other roles; if she is running away or being attacked my mind just keeps screaming "KICK THEM IN THE HEAD ALREADY!".

Don't know why "action scenes" would even be a consideration for judging the acting ability for any performer. Some of the greatest actors and actress have never be involved with any action filled scenes.

I think that if you really want to make a value judgement on SMG and her interpretation and performances in the series you should go into it without any preconceived notions about a style of film and how that equates to her acting abilities and on the series.

I would also hope that you can leave behind any of the controversery about "shipper" - both stories are so very different and yet very connected - it makes for an extremely interesting story and character exploration and great drama.

It's great that you will be seeing the series for the first time - I don't know anyone who has not been into the Buffyverse and Angelverse for a long time. Look forward to reading your ideas about the series and all the characters.
