We'll everyones starting to post their moments of the year and for me its a tad early for that but I will give you this, My Top Ten Movies Of 2006 That I have Seen.
10) Da Vinci Code
Just beating World Trade Centre, Dead Mans chest and Man of the Year for 'Film which was bad but i didnt go to the cinema enough to have seen something better. So there you go, not that great but not unwatchable like some [I'm looking at you Click and Mary Antoinette!]
09) X-men 3
Since Bryan Singer saw the need to make bad Superman movie about Superman Returning, The new writer/director team managed to balls this up, Sure the trailers promised the big all out conflict the last two movies had been leading up too but instead we got Ian McKellen having a hissy fit on the Goldengate Bridge. Not Rubbish but can't say i wasnt disapointed.
08) Crank
Its like Speed [the film not the drug] but with a bloke instead of a bus, and he's like he's on speed [the drug, not the film] because he has to run around lots and do things that look exciting on film like drive a car through a shopping centre, cos if he stops a toxin the baddy poisoned him with will kill him. Great film, dosent take itself serious and is fun [Hurray!]
07) Done The Impossible
I wasnt sure to include this or not seeing as technically its an ameature film and dosent have an offical DVD distribution and thus I should include all the other Indie ameature films i've watched but seeing as how A: This is Brilliant and Firefly related and B: its been a bit fo a shite year for the Ameature scene I've kept it in. Brilliant documentary about the Rise and Fall and Rise of Firefly and Serenity and all those other things Richard B. Brookes can't handle.
06) The Queen.
So i don't know if i'd have gone to see this if i hadnt been abroad for 2 months and kinda missing silly little things of home [like say, having a monarch] or how much was my desperately wanting a well written political drama since the west wing ended. Either way this is very nicely put together and well played by Helen Mirran and that bloke who does Blair.
05) V For Vendetta
I left the cinema feeling very happy with this one, an Anti-Hero who's a bit of a git. We havent seen that in a while. Not half as good as the fantastic comic it's based on but not at all a bad adaptation. Sure it's dropped the more Anarchic themes [and any other mention of anarchy] but it does a good job of summing up the comics plot and puttnig it on the big screen. even if it is an anti-Thatcher Rant from the 80's reused against Mr. Bush.
04) Zerophilia
Weird Shite. I got lost in Chicago and found one of the three cinemas in the world showing this film. It's a Charlie Kaufman style film about a youngman who finds himself turning into a young lady whenever he thinks about well... young ladies. also theres lots of sex. and things that make you think about life. also the people having the sex are very pretty. I don't know if it counts but my viewing experience was greatly benefitted from there only being 5 other people in the cinema, and we all ended up having a nice little chat about it after!
03) Clerks II
When I first heard this was coming I'd like to say I was quietly cautious. but i wasnt . I was terrorfied Rude yet clever comedy king Kevin Smith was going to screw up badly and drag us all down with him. What a suprise when it infact blew the original clerks straight out the water as well as his best film to date 'Chasing Amy' by the End of it.
02) Casino Royale
Ok, I spent a long time debating this one, maybe it should be number one? When Daniel Craig was named Bond #6 everyone groaned but i just took the wait and see approach. I wasnt too keen at the idea of a reboot but when I saw the trailer I realised Bond never loved Continuity anyhow so might as well just go with it. Brilliant, just Brilliant, i'd like to say best Bond film in Decades. but it dosent quite top my favourite and Casino Royale Director Martin Campbells previous Bond outing "Goldeneye"
[No not cos of the game Richard, You plonk!] So here we have it, "The Best Bond Film For Decades [exept for Goldeneye]" [P.s. If Eva Greens reading this, shes welcome to marry me]
And At Number #1
01) The Prestige
Marginly better than the bloody brilliant Casino Royale, twas a tough choice but The Prestige just gets it. Batman and Wolverine as 19th Century Stage Magicians, David Bowie as real life electric cleverman 'Nikola Tesla'
after I came out to the cold Denver afternoon I asked myself if i liked it more than momento and was suprised i did, i then asked the same question about batman begins and was slightly taken aback when i realised it was indeed better.
So There We Go.
2006, it's been called the best year for films since 1999 and that might well be right. Yes I'm sure there are films out there which are better than some of the lower down films but i didnt get around to seeing them.
