Alright, these boards have been over this (names) before, but I love etymology and names and their history and meanings. Found a neat baby name website that shows name popularity over the last 120 years or so. Just type in a name and, voila!

Buffy peaked in the 70s and now it's almost nonexistent. I think Joss was harkening back to his youth when he pulled that one out of his...hat. All I could think of when I first heard of the Buffy movie was reruns of that 60s show, "Family Affair". It had Buffy, Jody and Sissy. I hated all those names, lol. But look what happens when you type in Willow, Xander or Angel! The influential power of television, huh? All are much better than Kal-el anyway...

More recent trends in America seem to be just naming girls after lovely sounding words: American Indian tribes (Dakota, Cheyenne) or dead presidents (Madison, Kennedy...where's Polk and Garfield BTW? Eisenhower? Heh). It would seem to be mostly genXers, some older millies doing this. Also, some traditional names like Emma are huge again (look at the Emma curve!). The only Emma I knew when I was little was my great grandmother. And also Abigale (Abby), Lily...

So what are some cool names? What might you name your kids?
 
Very cool! I've always been fascinated with etymology and word origin, too.

My name seems to have peaked in the 60's. I was born in 1967, so I guess my name was popular then, altho I was named after my grandmother. I wanted to name my daugher Leah, or Fern, both old fashioned names, after my other grandmother, but just couldn't make them work. So she got a different form of my middle name and 'Mercedes' as a middle name.
 
My name is very very common like in the 1880, but later too so yeah... But my pretty online name seems to be not common at all, heh 🙁

Oh and yeah, I decided some day last Christmas that my daughter's name was going to be Gwen (only 'cause of Gwen Raiden, heh). But I like Willow and Fred very much too. And Alexis for a boy but honestly, I don't want sons (uh, long story).
 
I love naming things, so let's just hope I never get kids cause...poor souls.

How about Lucifer O Barbro for a guy? Or Video Claus for a girl? And if I did get a kid I think I might have to name him/her doesn't matter, to Frank he's the man.
 
My name is very popular (Nick) and it kind of pisses me off. I wish I had a name where it was kind of uncommon. As far as the names of my future children, well, I am gonna go with Faith for girl and Xander for a boy!!!!
 
I am totally with ya'll about the names. I'm definitely naming my kids uncommon names. I've always like Phaedra for a girl. Or maybe Andromache. I'm a huge mythology fan. Or maybe Drea. If its a boy, I'm not so sure, because male mythology figures have weird names. I like Iain though. And Hunter and Malcolm. But never would I subject a boy child to a name like Jayne or Joscelyn. Its so would get them beat up...hmmm. Maybe Asher.

What do you think about people who name their kids after places?
 
I knew a couple of Thors growing up. I assume they had a Scandinavian heritage, or the dad was a Marvel comics fan...

I tend to like short, pithy, names: Jack, Joe, Kate, Gwen...

But, unusual names are attention getters, to be sure.
 
I haven't decided yet, but I will definitely try to look for a name that's original... maybe something old fashioned or something... don't like that whole trend of naming your kids Apple or things like that. Anyway, I still have plenty of time to figure it out.... I hope 😉 Also, it has to be a name that English people can pronounce, lol 😀
 
huh, seems my name was VERY popular in the 1980's, which is when i was born, so that worked out well!!
at the minute i'm leaning towards Dawn and River for my daughters, when i have them!! (the power of the TV!!) but i'm stuck as far as boys names goes!!
 
Well, I know about a lot of Jennifer's. I'm never the only Jennifer in any of my classes, and I have several of them in my cell phone under their last names. I'm thinking about legally changing my name...or using my middle name. 😀
 
My best friend's name is Barbara and she hates it. She wants to change it to Epiphany, a nickname she's been going by for years. Kinda gives me a secret little laugh every time I think about it, but she doesn't know that, LOL!
 
LOL, I have a friend named Barbara too. She loves pigs, they're her favorite animal, so we call her Bacon. I don't think she wants to change her name though. She's the only Barbara I know personally.

LMAO, geez perhaps I need sleep or possibly drugs, but that just cracked me up so bad for no obvious reason. No offence to any Barbra's or pig lovers I'm just stupid in the head.

That's the same reaction I had the first time I heard someone call her that...
My name is not a popular one, unless people are going by it as a nickname. There are very few who are actually named my name and not just using it as a nickname.

I love names. Since we are on the concept of children names... I've always liked the name Olivia. I'm hoping that I still like it when I have children. All other names are okay, but that's my favorite.

Another note, please think before you name your child. I am a teacher, and when six of my kids all have the ending 'quavion'... and a different beginning, it gets very confusing. I repeat.... think before you name your kids. Q does not work well in kids anmes.
 
I don't know why Barb wants to change hers.....she just can't stand it for some reason! Never has liked it. She's the only Barbara I know, too.
