Time for another one of my sporting threads 😀

So... Lakers vs Celtics, probably the biggest rivalry in the NBA. I think it's gonna be really close this year. Obviously the Lakers have Kobe, arguably the second best basketball player ever, and the best player in the league at the moment. However I think the front line of the Lakers is much weaker than that of the Celtics, I don't know if Gasol and Odom will be able to cope with the physicality of Garnett, Perkins and Davis. Bynum obviously has a physical presence, but his knee is not looking too good at the moment. The Celtics also have a massive three point shooting presence in Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, and point guard Rajon Rondo is distributing the ball nicely. The Celtics are also playing great defense at the moment especially in the paint.
For these reasons I think the Celtics are just gonna edge, and win in 7 games, unless Kobe plays every game like he did in game 6 against the Suns. Anybody else have any views?
 
I voted Celtics (in 6). I think their big men are more physical and they'll outmuscle the Lakers' bigs. Also, they have no answer for Rondo.

Also, not to turn this into a Lebron vs Kobe thread but most analysts will tell you LeBron is the better player right now. Kobe is a great player for sure, and if he wins a 5th ring you'd almost have to consider him the greatest Laker of all time, but he's in the tail end of his career and LeBron is in his prime. You can say yea, but look who's in the playoffs still and look who's not, but Kobe undeniably has a better supporting cast. I think you can however make an argument that Kobe is the best closer in the game right now.

Yeah I completely agree, but I was conscious of starting a Lebron/ Kobe debate. I know that Lebron is more athletic, and possibly a better shooter, passer, defender, scorer etc. But that the fact is that Kobe is a closer, and Lebron is not (yet). Just look at the last time the Cavs played the Celtics. Lebron allowed KG to rile him, took a stupid pull-up 3 at a pivotal moment and lost his team the game. Kobe doesn't do that, Kobe makes the right decision and wins games. Kobe has also become a leader since 2008 (when Lakers lost to Celtics in the finals). Speaking from experience these are the guys you want on your team.
I think that one day Lebron will be as good a closer and as good a leader as Kobe but he is not at the moment. Lebron is the best player in the L, but Kobe is the greatest.

I dont think so. I am tired of people saying he is the best player. He is the most talented and has a great upside, but is he REALLY the best player? Hell, for that matter I think Steve Nash is a better player than Lebron.
 
I haven't followed NBA especially close the past years but Lakers are my team so I hope they'll win. But with close to no insight to the teams guessing how it'll end seems pointless.
 
Steve Nash is probably the best shooter in the NBA, but he can't defend, can't rebound, and I'm pretty sure his FG% has been better in his career. You could even argue LeBron passes better. LeBron averaged over 8 (EIGHT) assists as a forward this year. Not to mention almost 30 points and 7 rebounds a game. He is simply a stats machine. That's why people say he is the best player. I think this year was actually somewhat of an anomaly in the playoffs in those last few games against the Celtics he played poorly. Think last year, his game winning shot against the Magic, or think back to 2007, 29 of the final 30 points in regulation and overtime, the final 25 points. Look up "LeBron takes over game 5" .. no player in NBA history has taken a team to the finals with that little talent on the roster. The only player that has as much pressure as LeBron does on him to make plays is Dwayne Wade. Honestly though, his "choking" in the playoffs this year could also be a function of the coaching staff and how they run plays in crunch time, ie, give LeBron the ball at the top of the key while everyone else stands around watching.

I was gonna explain why Lebron is a better player than Steve Nash, but I think you've pretty much covered it all :D
Just depends.. you look at the overall stats (even though the game is played on more than just statistics) and Nash and James are comparable players. James is a good individual player, with alot of potential but I would not say he is the best in the league. Not now. Its moot argument as you wont change my mind. Lebron reminds me of Walt Williams with more talent.
 
Right now he is in the Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Dan Marino category of that "really good player, never won the big one" and until he does he will always be questioned. I think when and if he wins an NBA championship he'll be viewed in a different light. Incidentally though the numbers gap between LeBron and Nash is about as wide as the grand canyon. If you go by PER they aren't even in the same hemisphere. (31.1 to 21.6)
 
I think I can better explain what I meant. Lebron is a dominate force, much like Shaq was a dominate force, but like you said, how many championship appearances has he made? Why I think Nash is a better player is his shooting percentage, specially free throw. Until Lebron, and Dwight Howard for that matter, get their free throw shooting up to get a complete game I dont think either one could be considered the best. I just dont think stats alone are what makes a someone the best player; just if it is crunch time I would rather have a Nash than a James at this point in his career, if no other reason than experience.
