Need ID to use social media

Earlier I talked about this very thing happening when I read that LA was requiring you to present your ID to access porn sites. I said it was just the beginning... and now this:

"Rep. Chis Stewart (R–Utah) last week introduced a bill that would require social media platforms to verify the age of every registered user and prohibit registering children younger than 16.

H.R. 821, which Stuart introduced in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, requires platforms to verify age using government identification, such as a birth certificate or a driver's license. The bill would apply to any platform that allows users to make accounts for posting, sharing, or viewing user-generated content (UGC). [so in theory, we would have to present and have our government ID stored at Buffy-Boards] In addition, to be covered, a platform's primary purpose must be the dissemination of UGC.

This spacious definition of "social media" could be interpreted by regulators to include messaging, video, and email services, none of which are explicitly excluded from the statute's provisions. And unlike many recent proposals to regulate online life, the bill does not establish a market cap threshold to spare smaller platforms from having to collect sensitive information from users—which would be costly to protect and would threaten users' privacy in the event of a data leak.

The bill would further violate the liberties of adults."

I cannot imagine the bill passing, but there will be something similar coming sooner rather than later.

Its probably too late to ban kids from the internet all together, but that would be ideal. They truly dont need to see most of the stuff that is online. There is some freaky shit on twitter. Its easier than ever to lead kids to doom.


Yeah I know, it will never happen. The buffy fan in me romanticizes library book research, bring that back for under 16's! They might look back on it fondly too.

Absolutely never give up one iota of the freedom you have. I would definitely not put my birth certificate or driver's license numbers on line where it can be hacked by just about anyone and since the major banks have been hacked and CSIS, the Canadian Security and Investigation Service, the Canadian equivalent of the FBI, has also been hacked, so small websites could never afford to be more secure than that. Canada has gone through a successive elimination of freedom of speech largely due to Justin Trudeau wanting control of what people say to each other because if he can control that, he can increase his political power.

As for defending children, there is no one at all in politics who cares. Children are simply a device to get leverage to eliminate freedom of speech. Do you think Chris Stewart has any actual value to add here? What most people ignore is that children have been running into porn in magazines for decades and the sky didn't fall. Children do not normally suffer any kind of bad effect from online content that they wouldn't have been exposed to at school or even in church.
