Right ive been considering this for a while now. I want to quite smoking it costs far to much money, I have to smoke outside of pubs now and my chest hurts at times (notice how the health issue was last lol)

Im not sure how you really go about it? Is it free on nhs? whats best to use patches, gum?

Also I would like to add to this thread with my diary of how im going and I would like you guys to spur me one. Its going to be really hard but i need to do it.

So this is going to be my last week of smoking hopefully. As soon as I get paid im going to start looking around for patches or something like that.

My dad did the hypnosis thing, and it helped him quit smoking but did nothing for his obsessive personality. He just found something else to fill it. So I think the first thing you need to do is figure out WHY you smoke and work on the root of it rather than the symptom. Unless, of course, it's an actual physical addiction and not a psychological one (these things can go either way).

I dont know why I smoke. If I remenber correctly it was when I was 15 and this girl I liked was smoking and I asked her for a fag to seem cool or summat.

I'm a bit no nonsense when it comes to giving up fags. You stop end of discussion. My mother smoked started smoking at the age of 11 and recently gave them up because it was causing her problems with her health. She's 46 so 35 years smoking and she manged to kick it. I don't see why you can't too. I don't know if the NHS would cover it considering you're so young. Try the patches or even the little fake fag thing if you miss having something in your hands. The gum is disgusting. I know there are tablets you can get to make you stop but I think they are seriously expensive. Also try and avoid other smokers for the first few weaks just to avoid that extra bit of temptation.

Its not easy to quite smoking. At least none of my mates smoke so that helps.

I know it's not easy. I mean it took my mother almost 40 years to work up to it. What I meant was make it easy. Just decide your not going to do it and then don't.

Yeah I get what your saying. Im hoping when I Buy the pc for my room and start playing world of warcraft that will take my mind of it. I think im going to get patches and chew loads of gum (normal gum)

Careful with WOW; it tends to be addicting, too.

Yeah exactly, just find other things to do when you feel a craving coming on.

Just stop doing it...pick a day and stop...I did before Christmas and I hated it and still want a ciggy every bloody day...but I'm not going to have one...those white tubey b*****ds aren't going to beat me this time!
It's not easy and I'm still feeling the effects now but it's worth it...especially when my GP told me how much I'd reduced my chances of dying from a cardio-vascular event.

LOL...'Those white tubey b*****ds'!!
I remember when my Dad stopped smoking. I was four, and told him that I didn't want to ride in the car with him anymore because I couldn't breathe. He then decided to stop smoking. He chose the cold turkey route... It was hurting his daughter, so he just stopped. It was and is immensely hard, but you can do it!

Hey, im into my 5th week of quiting. Im using patches and am currently on the last step. I find that they really work as i havent had a craving since b4 i quit. Hope u go ahead with it, i feel so much better after doing it, i can breathe easily and dont have that yukky ashtray breath anymore.
🙂 Also chewing normal gum helps, but dont chew too much, drink heaps a water and when you have a craving get up and do something to take your mind off it, but seriouslt the patches are helpung me, im 22 and have only been smoking since i was 18 but im kicking the habit.

Well I'm probably not the best person to take advice from as I just put out a cigarette before typing away! I've quit twice. The first time I went cold turkey and lasted about 4 days before practically attacking one of my friends for a cigarette. The second time I used gum and lasted 2 months but then kind of forgot why I'd quitted and missed the habit and social aspect of having a cigarette and beer and good chat.

My housemate has recently quit smoking cold turkey and is doing really well.. She just seems to be spending a bit more time with non smokers and keeping herself occupied when she feels the need for a cigarette.

My dad smoked up until about 2 years ago using gum. He still chews the gum all the time when he's having a few drinks or with me and my mum (both smokers!). The gum has just become a cigarette to him instead, so despite still needing the nicotine he doesn't have the disgusting chemicals going into his body or the gross smell of cigarettes.

Good luck is all I can give you!

Like Mr. P - I quit in January. I used the patch, I highly recommend it! Hubby and I both did. I also want one every day but you just remind yourself that you don't smoke anymore and you just move on. You CAN do it though. My skin is better and I smell tons better too LOL all coconutty and stuff - you can too. 😀

Go coconut smell! thats a good reason lol. Thanks I kinda hear a 50/50 of this patches if they work or not. But the people that say they dont probally had no will power.

As a smoker that tried to quit I'd suggest you go cold turkey. But take what-ever you need to help you.
I have tried the tablets but they had no effect on me at all. With some people they work and on some people they have a side effect, skin irritations, large spots etc.
The patches, well take your pick, I tried the more famous ones but they caused a few reactions, the cheaper ones worked well but the glue was crap.
I found the lozenges okay and the gum tasted really nice, they didn't stop me wanting to smoke, but they tasted alright.
If you don't like them, but they are effective keep them in a bag with mint, orange, apple, strawberries etc.
But that was ok, cos by then I'd found out that it was the cigs that were keeping me alive, so I keep smoking.
In the build up to quitting smoking I'd suggest you try to brainwash yourself to not want to smoke.

So how is the quitting going so far?

Back when I used to smoke I just stopped without any further ado...I probably wasn't that addicted, which is a good thing.
About the patches and chewing gum etc., I think maybe it has something to do with that for some people smoking is a physical addiction, while for others it's psychological. So I would guess the patches only work as long as it's mostly physical.
