(New) 30 Days of Bangel

Aug. 3 - Day 3: Favorite lighthearted/funny Bangel moment

My favorite is the end of Bad Eggs! The kissing is hot, plus the reveal that they're on either side of Buffy's bedroom window is adorable.

Day 1: When did you first become a Bangel fan?

Lie To Me was the first episode I saw, but I think it would be The Dark Age, and right at the end after Angel has defeated the demon.

Day 2: Most heart-melting/romantic Bangel scene?

Difficult one, probably The Prom, them dancing together.

Day 3: Favorite lighthearted/funny Bangel moment?

Can I cheat and say the Wes/Cordelia acting out of Bangel! Otherwise it's IWRY and them eating ice cream in bed.

I love the Cordy and Wesley synopsis of their relationship. Its so true and so funny.
Day 3 - Favorite Lighthearted/Funny Bangel Moment?
I don’t know if this really counts as “lighthearted” given everything that happens before and given what we all know is coming, but I love the sweet respite of the “mortal coordination” moment they get to have together in “I Will Remember You”. Of course we all know it can’t last - even when you’re watching it for the first time you know that - but as a fan of the Buffy & Angel relationship, that we are given this moment which otherwise seemed impossible, feels like such a lucky gift. It’s like the best kind of fan service there is.

Day 3 - Favorite Lighthearted/Funny Bangel Moment?

I had trouble picking between this one, the Helpless "daddy" scene and their banter in Chosen. But ultimately I chose this scene in Halloween.

ANGEL I always wished I could meet someone...exciting. Interesting.
BUFFY Really. Interesting - like how?
Angel smiles. She's baiting him and he knows it.
ANGEL You know how.
BUFFY Still, I've had a hard day and you should tell me.
They move closer together.
ANGEL I should.
BUFFY Oh - definitely...
And he does. Non verbally. Smootchie city.

You guys. The script literally says smootchie city. I die. Anyway I know this scene is a bit unpopular (I can't find their kiss giffed that's how unpopular it is) and I get it the stuff he says about women of his time isn't cool. But I love that he thinks of Buffy as exciting and interesting and I love their interactions. They feel so comfortable with each other it's all kinda domestic and feels normal. And I love their flirty banter and his toothy smile. They were allowed to be so happy before they knew about that pesky curse.

That scene is unpopular? Are we sure that’s about what he says and not about B’s pj pants? :p

I love this, too! Its so flirty. Talk about chemistry!
Aug. 4 - Day 4: What music from the shows do you love the most for Bangel? (This can be score - like "Close Your Eyes" - or a song used for a scene - like "I'll Remember You" or both!)

I'm going to have to go with Wild Horses for a song or the Close Your Eyes score.

Aug. 4 - Day 4: What music from the shows do you love the most for Bangel?

I gotta go with I'll Remember You.

It's daybreak, and you are asleep,
I can hear you breathe now,
Your breath is deep

But before I go,
I'll look at you one last time,
I can hear a heart beat, is it yours or is it mine?

I look at your lips, I know how soft they can be,
Did they know what they wanted, the times they kissed me,

And your hands, that I've held in mine,
Now they're reposing on the pillow,
Will they ever miss me sometime?

I'll remember you, you will be there in my heart,
I'll remember you, but that is all that I can do,
But I'll remember

Your eyes, that always make me shiver,
Now they're closed, they just sometimes twitch a little,
And your body, I could hold for an hour,
It sent me to heaven, with its heat and power,

I'll remember you, you will be there in my heart,
I'll remember you, but that is all that I can do,
But I'll remember

I can just imagine Buffy thinking all these things about Angel, especially the questions & unsureness for a lot of it. When it comes to their relationship, Angel is a bit more confident, and knows Buffy's feelings because Buffy was more emotional & expressed what she was feelings. However, with Angel, he could be harder to read given his more introvert nature. So sometimes, Buffy had to question where he was. Such as their breakup when she asks if it's hard for him. Or during the double-agent deal with Faith, where Buffy was unsure if it was all acting, or if part of him would prefer a girl like Faith, then trying to read his mind to find out.

But it's also something great & chilling about when it first plays during their 2nd kiss. The song ends with "Bu i'll remember", and just then, it shows the burn from Buffy's cross on his chest. A reminder & foreshadowing on just how painful & hard their love was going to be.

I’m gonna have to go with The Sundays’ cover of “Wild Horses” at the prom, too. Not only because it introduced me to The Sundays, who are a great band, but especially for the line, “Let’s do some living after we die,” because Angel and Buffy are both doing their best living after they’ve died, <3

30 Days of Bangel - Aug. 4 - Day 4: What music from the shows do you love the most for Bangel?

I really tried to be “different” but ultimately my heart told me I had to go with their score - the Buffy/Angel theme “Close Your Eyes” by Christophe Beck.

I’m going to talk way too much about this song so I apologize in advance because it’s probably super boring but I’m a music nerd so… oh well. First off, Christophe Beck is a phenomenal composer. I think his scores are undeniably the best stuff we have on the show. Obviously, the Academy agrees with me as he won an Emmy for his composition for Becoming I (and was nominated for OMWF).

But the composition of Close Your Eyes brings with it such beautiful artistic interpretation. It’s in the key of A Major which is a great key signature for string music (and the strings are really allowed to shine in this song - if only we had a real live orchestra that would play this!)

The piece starts off right out the gate with violins growing in a small crescendo that sets up a type of suspense. There is some dissonance here (that resolves quickly) but it mirrors the “Who are you?” stage of B/A in Season 1, the mystery surrounding the beginning of their relationship.

We quickly move into a beautiful, sweet, melodic clarinet solo. The violins and the piano accompaniment add depth to this first chapter but the tone is still rather high and light that invokes feelings of innocence, a young naivete that reflects Buffy and Angel’s relationship in early season 2. They are both in love for the first time and it really does feel almost whimsical.

The piece slowly shifts into a lower registry and the dynamics of the piece call for a louder orchestra, the feeling is that of full speed ahead. This would be Buffy and Angel moving forward with their relationship, deciding to sleep together.

And then, of course, the tone of the song changes. The horns become dissonant with the strings and there is an ominous tone. Of course, this is Angel losing his soul. Their love has led them to dire circumstances.

In the next part of the piece, the strings drop off. You get the piano portion of the piece alone. The feeling is that of isolation, the piano is exposed. There is an uncomfortable vulnerability that perfectly mirrors Buffy’s feelings of guilt and shame following the events of Surprise. This piano-focused isolation with soft strings in the background (almost like Angel is still on her mind) continues a few measures while Buffy finds a way to cope with her grief and her inner turmoil.

And then our strings drop off and we a return to our melody - piano only, a higher register but the melody is the same. The score says “play freely” and so there is an air of unpredictability in the rhythm and the melody, some confusion. That would be Angel, re-ensouled. He’s back but he’s a little confused. Buffy is too. And we all know this part of the song because we all cried through this part of the piece when Angel and Buffy finally reconnect in Becoming. It’s just them two and in the piece, it’s just the piano, no strings accompanying them.

But then, oh my friends, and then…we get this beautiful epic full orchestra entrance with all of the strings and horns coming in and the percussion section shocking you back into reality because it isn’t just Buffy and Angel, it’s the world. The entire world is at stake. And the music continues to swell and Buffy makes her ultimate sacrifice to kill Angel. And the epic-ness of her decision, her loss is all reflected in the full orchestra accompanying her.

And that’s one of my favorite parts but really, the best part about this song is the end. Because you get a new dissonant melodic sequence at the end. It’s a very different from the melody that came before. It feels like the song is moving into a new movement altogether. And the piece ends on an F# minor and it never resolves back into its major key. Because the story doesn’t end there! There is more music to write!

And in my mind, that’s because this symphony just keeps on playing.

So uh thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. 😀

Beautifully put, Mrs. Gordo. You have taken a familiar song that is familiar because I have heard it so much and given me a new way to look at it. Next time I listen to it or watch Becoming 2 I will be thinking of your post.

Aug. 4 - Day 4: What music from the shows do you love the most for Bangel?

Well, this is going to seem pretty lame after @Mrs Gordo ’s answer, but my favorite is the Splendid song You and Me, which they perform at The Bronze during The Freshman.

I love the way the music sets the tone for the scene and evokes Buffy and Angel’s relationship so well. It’s sensual and melancholy and romantic and it makes so much sense that Buffy would imagine she sees Angel while listening to it. I like how The Freshman and City Of emphasize the way Buffy and Angel are used to turning to each other for comfort in hard times and how they feel a little lost without that connection. These lyrics in particular fit so well:

You don't mean to be number one
And that's how come you are

And:

You make me see
Why I should love me

It reminds me of Helpless and Amends and all the times we saw them reassure each other, and how hard it is to lose the person who can always see what’s great about us.

I also like it on a meta level, since Buffy/Angel was such a big part of the first three seasons, so “We made this [as in, the show] about / You and me” during the scene evoking their relationship in the Season 4 premiere just seems kinda perfect.

I’d give an honorable mention to the Splendid song Charge from IOHEFY too. I like the way it fits with the Buffy/Angel/Angelus storyline, especially:

What do you say
To a dream that won't go away?
'Cause I don't know if I can stand it

@Ann - Ahh! So sorry I added an "e" to your name in that comment. The comment function doesn't let me edit. 🙁

Aug. 5 - Day 5: Song from anywhere that you love the most for Bangel? (Any song by any artist ever! Share lyrics/vids if available!)

I heard this song years ago and it immediately made be think of Bangel, I know there's other that do as well but I think this was the first one that really said Bangel to me.

Have you ever fed a lover with just your hands?
Closed your eyes and trusted, just trusted?
Have you ever thrown a fistful of glitter in the air?
Have you ever looked fear in the face and said, "I just don't care."?

It's only half past the point of no return
The tip of the iceberg, the sun before the burn
The thunder before the lightning and the breath before the phrase
"Have you ever felt this way?"

Have you ever hated yourself for staring at the phone?
Your whole life waiting on the ring to prove you're not alone
Have you ever been touched so gently you had to cry?
Have you ever invited a stranger to come inside?

It's only half past the point of oblivion
The hourglass on the table, the walk before the run
The breath before the kiss, and the fear before the flames
"Have you ever felt this way?"

La la la la la la la la

There you are
Sitting in the garden
Clutching my coffee
Calling me sugar
You called me sugar

Have you ever wished for an endless night?
Lassoed the moon and the stars and pulled that rope tight?
Have you ever held your breath and asked yourself will it ever get better than tonight?
Tonight

Aug. 5 - Day 5: Song from anywhere that you love the most for Bangel?

Most of the songs that I love for Bangel are saddish, and I'm not feeling saddish today, so I'm going with a sappy one that I like, which is Together by Michelle Branch.

It doesn't matter how far apart we are now
You can add up all the miles in between
If you take a good look all around now
All you see is you and me

...

Doesn't matter how long that it takes you
Cause I'll always be right by your side
And even when darkness awaits you
I'll be there to be your light
It's a hard lonely road
When you're standing outside in the cold hoping

And we belong together
Like the moon and stars in the midnight
And we'll be strong forever
Cause we belong together

I also love Taylor Swift's This Love, which @Mrs Gordo recently set a vid to!

Sorry I'm late...😳

Aug. 1 - Day 1: When did you first become a Bangel fan?

Well I honestly can't remember if I even watched the episodes in chronological order but my brain seems to have arranged my memories that way so we'll just pretend it's true.

I think S1 'Angel' was when I started actually shipping them. I love that episode and it has everything you could want: flirting, escape from danger, bedroom scene, that incredibly hot kiss, then distrust, angst and slow start of rebuilding of trust. The kitchen scene is one of my favourites. Not only did it make me fall hard for Angel himself but it's where I first really felt that frisson of sexual energy between them and I loved that we experience it through Buffy's gaze as she takes in his tattooed back. So as much as I loved their previous flirtations, that's all they really were whereas this episode kicks it up a notch and introduces more complexity to their dynamic (and to Angel's character) with the reveal of him being a vampire. And let's face it, the fact that it becomes forbidden is guaranteed to make people ship it hard from that point on.

Aug. 2 - Day 2: Most heart-melting/romantic Bangel scene

This one's tricky as I have different ones in mind for 'heart-melting' and 'romantic. For romantic I'd say the sunlight kiss on the pier is the one to beat. It's magical and we get to hear the Close Your Eyes theme in a triumphant major key.

tumblr_p7k17rZbm91xqcvfio5_r2_250.gif

For heart-melting, I would choose this from WML:

db59dd2ead18cad42afa3f7472497237d0aef74e.jpg

I love how it refers back to Darla's words in 'Angel': 'Did you think she would understand? That she would look at your face... your true face... and give you a kiss?'. This one really does melt my heart and I don't see how anyone can watch the scene and claim that it's just a teen crush. She knows what he is but she loves him because she sees him as a human being and this is when that really registers for him (and for us) for the first time.

Aug. 3 - Day 3: Favorite lighthearted/funny Bangel moment

I adore this scene in Helpless. Not only do we get a smile from Angel followed by an adorable sudden switch to intense worry (nicely done DB), but I feel like we rarely see this kind of smile from Buffy throughout the series - one that reaches her eyes, makes them sparkle and lights up her whole face. It's my favourite Buffy-smile in the entire show.
I like how she's amused by Angel's lame attempt at casualness and then is just tickled - and so obviously endeared - by his panicking.

Close Your Eyes. For all the reasons @Mrs Gordo outlined so beautifully. I couldn't have put it better myself (seriously I couldn't, since I have no idea how to write about music 😉 )

Aug. 5 - Day 5: Song from anywhere that you love the most for Bangel?

'Touched' by Vast. Loved it for these two ever since I first heard it on AtS. Here's a fanvid for you lovelies:

'I'll never find someone quite like you again...'

Indeed.

------------

And just to broaden our horizons I'm also going to introduce you guys to 'Zaroori Tha' by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. It's one that has more recently been reminding me of B/A.

(the official music video is really cheesy so I'm just linking the song)

Here's a pretty decent English translation. I think the lyrics match up so perfectly with their love, their breakup and the fact that their separation helped them grow and discover themselves as individuals.

Numerous words must have clung to your feet,
when you burnt the last letter of mine..
when you removed flowers from books,
you must have remembered the one who gave, too..

It was necessary for
the river* of your eyes to come down**..
[*literally 'sea', **we would say 'flow' - i.e. it was necessary for your tears to flow.]
The love was necessary,
and the separation was necessary too.

It was necessary that we both
had lots of wishes..
but then the falling off of the wishes
was necessary too..
It was necessary for
the river of your eyes to come down..

Tell me do you remember
when you stole my heart..
And you made the stolen thing
the house of God..
When you used to say that
you say my name while praying
and are afraid of ___
the prayers of love..
Those talks were just talks,
and somewhere, it was necessary
to drift away from those talks
[as in, to break those promises.]

We have the same faces,
it's the same me and the same you.

But I am lost,
and you're lost somewhere too.
I had ditched in love,
[i.e. I have betrayed in love]
so I was unbeliever, and so I still am.
I have found my destinations,
and still I am a traveller as I was.
Removed from your heart,
where I wandered and where I reached, (I don't know)
But when I wandered, I realized,

that it was necessary to wander too.
