Aug. 9 - Day 9: Bangel scene you like that most people seem to dislike
I can’t imagine any specific Bangel scene that Bangel lovers seem to dislike whereas other love it. It’s either dislike (break ups) or love (any other scene).
So I chose a Bangel-reference-scene that might be underrated and that I want to unwrap my thoughts about it.
The scene is taken from Angel 3x01 Heartthrob:
I love that scene because it shows the true essence of Angel’s love for Buffy to me. In my opinion Angel keeps the love going until the point where it gets to complicated. Instead of figuring it out and seeking Buffy’s thoughts, he escapes and does what he thinks is the best – making it all worse.
Example 1: The Prom opening scene
The opening scene shows Buffy and Angel comfy in bed. The scene gets uncomfortable when Buffy comments on kinda moving in with him:
„Maybe we should think about getting a few mirrors. And maybe a drawer, you know, for some of my stuff.“
He is certainly not approving watching his expression. Instead of touching upon it, he avoids it:
„I think maybe you should go, hunh?“
So they might argue or he’d hurt her feelings [It's fun as long as it doesn't cost me anything]
I really don’t get Cordy’s speech in IWRY „First they talk out their differences, then they punch them out.“ ← When did that happen?! Oh right that one extraordinary christmas time.... 🙄
Example 2: The Prom break up scene
After Joyce and the major had talked Angel practically into leaving Buffy (well that was easy... what Angelus’s actions weren’t capable of were easily done by an evil major and her unknowing mom pfft) he gets the point that he is a vampire, bound to the night and she has a life during the day, and the fact that they can’t have children. What the....? Shouldn’t they have clarified and resolved that after 3 years?!
So instead of talking things out, he chickens out [It's fun as long as it doesn't cost me anything]. Obviously Buffy disagrees („I want my life to be with you“), but our beloved blockhead thinks he’s wise and knows what’s best for her (because he was talked into it and didn’t find out for himself!) . SO dear Cordelia, I would have loved them talking out their differences and then punch them out!
Example 3: IWRY
Oh the day was fun – but it would have cost him his superpowers and he would’ve been a regular Joe. .. wait what kind of a reason is that?!
"No, I won't just stand by and let you fight, maybe die, alone."
„How can we be together if the cost is your life, or the lives of others?“
That makes me so angry. Because he did let her fight alone and die alone, damn it! Because the cost was her life and even future – thinking about Briley and disgusting Spuffy! And since when is he caring about other lives concerning Buffy? He’d always put her over anybody.
So as he said in „Hero“: "Maybe I was wrong?" – DUDE YES!!
And as James said:“ It's fun as long as it doesn't cost me anything“ – Nailed it.
