So it got all the votes but does that mean anything? Hey @brinkster130 @Amber Bunny Slippers are people really supporting this Cal3 thing?

It was doing my head in thinking about it. But I realized this morning it would be a way for California to get secession from the US while North and South California remain states. Especially considering what areas would make up the new California. When I thought of that it really all made sense. The states of North and South California and the independent country of California.

What's the vibe of people there? Are they talking about it?
 
Huh? Can us non Americans get some background info on what you're talking about!?

True, but they'd be tiny against the rest of the country so seceeding would make them vulnerable, no?

Unrelated but I think I'm getting an anxiety attack just comparing the pop size of New Cali versus the other "two" states and all their space.

Vulnerable how? Is some other state going to attempt to invade Hollywood? Just like you damn Vikings worried about land mass. I don't know what you mean about vulnerable. Rhode Island has been relatively safe.

You wrote " a way for California to get secession from the US while North and South California remain states" - which indicates they wouldn't be a state, part of the union anymore. They'd be a small entity with what political power or military force which could compare to the rest of the union? If they'd remain a state, then that's not a problem, but you seemed to indicate that it would be a way for them to seek independence. I bet there are a few states who wouldn't mind invading, pillaging and burning Hollywood to the ground! Well, a few people at least…

But I'll stop hijacking this thread now and let some Californians enlighten us more on the actual topic.

That's what I thought you meant but when you said the 'rest of the country' made me think of them as just as state. Either way I can't see another country trying to invade Hollywood.
 
@Taake This was the other thing I thought and I finally found a Q&A for it:

Electoral College votes will be divided among the new states based on population, roughly the same as they are apportioned today, but with the additional recognition that comes with more direct and proportional influence over the Electoral College totals. More states will equal more seats in the U.S. Senate — the four additional Senators will dramatically increase our region’s influence within the federal government.
 
Based on population, well, then I guess New Cali will be doing just fine within the union.

Might be a dumb question but will other states / the federal government get a say in this potential triad?

Other states don't really matter. If it gets enough votes, which it should, then it will be passed to congress for approval. Theoretically congress should- based upon the will of the people- formally approve it but... I am sure they'll find some way to interfere in another state's politics and not allow it.
 
That sounds kinda scary, a small area having so much political power, I know it makes sense and other states are probably smaller, but they no doubt have less people

It's the same as it is now. But it would just be more overt and open about it.
A proposal to break up California into three separate states has earned enough votes to find it's way onto the ballet for the midterm election! 😱
Wonder what @Amber Bunny Slippers and our other Cali board members think of all this?

I DON'T support it, and it's the most idiotic thing I've heard in quite awhile. Seriously, this state has FAR too many stupid people with a lot of time on their hands....I'm referring to those who sit around thinking up moronic ideas such as this.

However, I WOULD support a measure to nuke Northern California. Those pompous, sage-burning, wannabe hippies need to go. Seeing them turned to ash from a nuclear warhead blast wave would be AWESOME.

Isn't this just a grab for electoral votes? This gets brought up frequently and not much comes of it...in 2014 the same guy wanted to turn CA into 6 states. Even if it got the votes needed Congress would need to approve it and I doubt that happens.

And no, I don't think Californians are taking this all that seriously. The vibe is to make jokes about it.

Six is crazy. I can see three... his arguments are really valid and logical. I found myself agreeing with him.

Well yeah, Draper's been obsessed with this for like a decade, he's had time to make it sound pretty. But in reality it's just breaking up one of the largest economies, and wasting tax money, in hopes of changing the almost guaranteed 55 electoral votes to 35ish. This would literally cost the state billions to do which would come out of our pockets in state taxes. And water...oy vey.
