Isn't this just a grab for electoral votes? This gets brought up frequently and not much comes of it...in 2014 the same guy wanted to turn CA into 6 states. Even if it got the votes needed Congress would need to approve it and I doubt that happens.

And no, I don't think Californians are taking this all that seriously. The vibe is to make jokes about it.

You already know how many idiots live here. I'm sure a lot of them take it seriously because they have no life, and all those soy burgers melted their brains. They want to "make a difference." 😒

They're the same ass pansies you see on TV protesting the use of plastic straws...because they want to save the Earth. Sure! Eliminating plastic straws will make it all better. It's like building crossing bridges for animals so they don't get run over. OF COURSE these animals can read the signs that say "Wildlife Crossing." 😂

I think it's also worth mentioning that California is a big melting pot (not to be confused with the kind you smoke 😛). A great many of us (including me) come from other states in the US, while a great many others come from other countries (legally and otherwise). Few immigrants and transplanted US citizens are going to favor any form of secession from the US. Splitting California into two or more states might be feasible (and given what Sacramento is like, understandable why some want to do so), though think of what that would do to the US flag (the stars).



Though I do recall way back in the early 2000s (I'm almost certain it was before 9/11, but Bush was definitely POTUS) in which California juries and even state courts were refusing to enforce federal drug laws regarding marijuana (as the state had passed some measure) which was aggravating to the DEA who in turn were trying to get as many drug cases that violated federal law into federal courts where California couldn't stymie it...and made the PR blunder of raiding medical marijuana clinics, which including dragging people dying of cancer to prison, at least one of whom then choked to death on her own vomit (which the marijuana had under control, but was not allowed while she was incarcerated). California politicians were milking it for what it was worth and the DEA was flying helicopters over those events that came off as a threat (which I'm sure they intended it to be, but wanted people scared instead of angry as they got--it also doesn't help that more than one California forest fire was started by DEA helicopters flying too low looking for hidden pot crops and then crashing into power lines).

I hung around some radical people (of many political persuasions, Left and Right) back then, and one hardcore Leftist was talking about a militant secession over this issue. While sympathetic, I was young and snarky, and teased him with, "How? You don't like guns, and only your counterparts on the Right seem to stockpile them." His eyes widened as if he realized a sudden flaw in his ideology regarding guns and the 2nd Amendment to resist tyrannical government. 😀 Of course nothing came of it, the situation just quietly died down (and if 9/11 happened then I can see why).

Northern California would control the water....can you imagine what that would mean for California and Southern California.

I love straws and I hate the idea of not being able to use them when needed/wanted.

Wait. No one is saying you can't use and still love straws. You just do like I do and use your dashwasher safe, reusable, metal straw. I've got one at work and at home and one I keep in the car when I want a cool, refreshing drink whislt driving. I can sip it through a straw and now worry about killing the planet because I am being responsible with my straw usage.

So do the people against straws want to save us from filling landfills with batteries? You know, like the ones powering many of their lappies and/or wireless accessories? Or even their smart phones that can only be recharged for so long?

I could also make some snarky comments about raising the smoking age to 21 (I say that as a non-smoker who thinks it's a filthy habit and I'm supportive of severe restrictions on tobacco ads and of draconian taxes on tobacco companies, though the latter beg for the black market to take over which could make a bad problem much worse) but it's too early for that.

Does putting it in the dishwasher really get it clean though? I'm skeptical of those metal straws... especially at restaurants because it seem hard to really clean the inside. I guess if it's my own personal one it's not as big of a germ worry. I don't mind the paper straws that a lot of places are now using, although if you have a drink you need to stir with it the paper straws fall apart quickly. Serveral places in LA have stoping having straws at all, that's what I find most annoying.

This all sounds very smart. Progressive, highly populated metropolitan areas should break off from their home state to fix the issues with the electoral college. Can’t do this in Texas because it’s Republican controlled. But Cali are a bunch of liberals so have at it.

I DON'T support it, and it's the most idiotic thing I've heard in quite awhile. Seriously, this state has FAR too many stupid people with a lot of time on their hands....I'm referring to those who sit around thinking up moronic ideas such as this.

However, I WOULD support a measure to nuke Northern California. Those pompous, sage-burning, wannabe hippies need to go. Seeing them turned to ash from a nuclear warhead blast wave would be AWESOME.

Isn't it part of the Texas state constitution that it reserves the right to split into five separate states? I have never heard of any similar provision in the California state constitution. Texans like being in a large state and would probably never invoke this right, but I have heard that it is there.

Yup. They wanted us so bad we got to set some terms. Part of the annexation into the union is that the state reserves the right to split itself up. I agree, neither the legislature nor the people of Texas would likely every agree to do that.

I know Alaska being the biggest state has taken a bit of thunder out of the size of Texas. I recall a female teacher who actually seemed displeased with stating that Texas is the biggest state... (grimacing) next to Alaska. I do recall learning in school that Texas had it set up to split into separate states (I thought it was 4, but I could easily be wrong), and while someone will say they should from time to time, Texans (at least in rural regions, rather than the urban areas which are as cosmopolitan as any other city and with many residents from other states and nations) seem more interested in Texas and/or the South seceding than the state splitting up.

There does seem to be some hostility (simmering rather than active, perhaps it's more of a hint of contempt) between West and East Texas, though West Texas seems to hate on Colorado more while East Texas prefers to hate on Oklahoma (apparently for being too much like East Texas as far as I can tell, though it's explained to me as a college sports rivalry, which I find hard to believe that's the root cause of it, no matter how much Texans and Oklahomans worship sports, practically incorporating it into religion).

From what I see, the split between "North" and "South" California is much more intense, though the TRUE north (that is, like Chico and above, which most Californians ignore) promotes the State of Jefferson who tend to really dislike the Bay Area and all regions to the south of it, and also (especially)Sacramento (as politicians there like to divert funds from sparse regions of the state to areas of bigger population, which gets them the votes), though when there was a brown out I overheard some of them (in Crescent City) blaming the bastards of southern Oregon for it. People are people wherever you go and it ain't pretty. 😛

When I was younger, it amused me to share some jokes Texans told about Californians to any native Californians that sported a Confederate flag. :troll face:
