Hey everyone! I have been a Buffy fan since I was little and am now in college. It's amazing how I can go back and watch certain episodes with new clarity and understanding than when I was 10! I can relate to so many episodes and have watched certain ones over and over because I just connected with the message so much. Glad to see there is an active community around so many years after its airing time.

Another reason I want to know more is because I am doing a research paper for my english class and we have to talk about a certain community of people, so I thought what better than the Buffy community?

If anyone is interested in answering some questions about this community, just about what you all do on this site, for example, why be apart of buffy-boards and does this specific group of Buffy fans feel stereotyped in anyway. And about how you all interact and really exciting things like that lol. There are more questions though!
So just let me know if anyone just wants to answer more questions! 🙂
Thanks!

Questions 🙂

Okay here's the list of questions, I'll try to word them in the least complicated way I can. And I don't know too much about buffy-boards since I'm new so if I mention something on here that's wrong, feel free to correct me! So here it goes 🙂

1)What is the main goal of this community? In other words, why did you join? Is there some overall purpose of having this board in place?

2)What do people generally do one here? What are the more popular things that people do? Are you apart of one of the RPGs? (I know we can choose a dorm and be either "good" or "evil", I'm assuming that's RPG?)

3) How do you guys mainly communicate? Is it mainly through the boards? Through direct messages? And why? (because it's easier just to create a thread?)

4) Do you guys use certain words or terms that has a specific meaning for this community? For example, the adoption thread's title is "Bad Eggs". Out of the context of this site, that would have a totally different meaning. Also in your everyday communication are there just certain expressions or phrases that are widely used?

5)Who are the most experienced member on here? And how can you tell who are the experienced ones, and who are the newcomers (like me!)

6)How do the new people on here learn the normal ways of interacting? (I know you there's the adoption option...)

7) Are there any conflicts within the community? So, are there any things that need to be worked on? Or certain groups of people that often maybe bump heads some times? (So just an example, do the people who like Angel more clash with the people who like Buffy more?)

8)Are there people on here that seem to have more trouble than others? Like do newer fans have trouble keeping up with the older fans who know more about the shows? Or do the newcomers have more trouble adjusting to the "ways" of the site?

9)Who is in charge? Who runs the site? (I'm assuming it's the moderators and administrators?)

10) Most of the people on here may have common interests. I'm guessing that one of those is knowledge about Joss Whedon and his other projects. Do you guys agree? Are there more things people on here generally tend to like? Like scifi shows?

11)Do you guys ever feel stereotyped in any way because of the fact that you post on an online board? I know for me if I talk about this outside of the boards it sort of categorizes me as a dork haha. Do you guys feel the same way? Are there other ways you feel stereotyped?

I hope this isn't too long! I would really appreciate some answers and look forward to hearing what everyone has to say (if anyone responds lol)

Also, I will be using this information in my paper, but I will not use anyone's usernames or personal information. Thanks again 🙂

First of, welcome to the board!!😀

I'm interesting in answering your question 🙂 I'm pretty busy now though, so I'll try to get back to you!

Just for your future reference, you really should ask permission before you use another person's site for research.

Please post how you will use member's identifiable information.

Hello and welcome to BB 😀

1)What is the main goal of this community? In other words, why did you join? Is there some overall purpose of having this board in place?

I joined to make new friends and have the ability to talk about my favourite shows.

2)What do people generally do one here? What are the more popular things that people do? Are you apart of one of the RPGs? (I know we can choose a dorm and be either "good" or "evil", I'm assuming that's RPG?)

Personally I read others opinions, learn how to do art work ie making banners, icons and wallpapers and get feedback, make new friends and chat about Buffy and Angel mainly. The Dorms are like a private area of the forums where a smaller group of people can chat, get to know each other better and enter Dorm competitions.

3) How do you guys mainly communicate? Is it mainly through the boards? Through direct messages? And why? (because it's easier just to create a thread?)

If I want to communicate with the board as a whole I make a thread or post. If I want to reach a smaller audience I post in the Dorm. If it's one on one then a Private Message. Or most days you can find me in the forums chat room.

4) Do you guys use certain words or terms that has a specific meaning for this community? For example, the adoption thread's title is "Bad Eggs". Out of the context of this site, that would have a totally different meaning. Also in your everyday communication are there just certain expressions or phrases that are widely used?

Not really imo.

5)Who are the most experienced member on here? And how can you tell who are the experienced ones, and who are the newcomers (like me!)

That's a tough Q lol.... experience does not always come with time on the forums sometimes its just the amount of posts, not as in spamming, but as in being involved with the forums and members.

6)How do the new people on here learn the normal ways of interacting? (I know you there's the adoption option...)

Adoption is a good way as you can make a friend that can guide you around and help you out. Just reading the FAQ and following the rules and jumping into the conversations with the rules in mind. Coming into the chat and involving yourself in forum activities is also a good way.

7) Are there any conflicts within the community? So, are there any things that need to be worked on? Or certain groups of people that often maybe bump heads some times? (So just an example, do the people who like Angel more clash with the people who like Buffy more?)

I think you get clashes with anyone with a strong opposite opinion than yourself but these are monitored by the forums staff team and in general it does not become a bad thing and I know some members have forged very good friendships with others of opposite opinions.

8)Are there people on here that seem to have more trouble than others? Like do newer fans have trouble keeping up with the older fans who know more about the shows? Or do the newcomers have more trouble adjusting to the "ways" of the site?

I think people adjust quickly to the forums as it is a good forums to be on with a good atmosphere. There is always someone to help you out here.

9)Who is in charge? Who runs the site? (I'm assuming it's the moderators and administrators?)

Buffy Summers and her team. Yes the Admin and Moderating crew.As far as I know

10) Most of the people on here may have common interests. I'm guessing that one of those is knowledge about Joss Whedon and his other projects. Do you guys agree? Are there more things people on here generally tend to like? Like scifi shows?

I think in general yes we do have lots in common but there is also a wide variation of interests on this site so lots to chat about.

11)Do you guys ever feel stereotyped in any way because of the fact that you post on an online board? I know for me if I talk about this outside of the boards it sort of categorizes me as a dork haha. Do you guys feel the same way? Are there other ways you feel stereotyped?

I get slotted into the Nerd/Geek category by my RL friends but I don't mind.

I apologize for not asking for permission first. I appreciate any feedback and possible permission to get the opinions of fellow Buffy fans.

I will be using the information very generally. For example, if most people say they use direct message to communicate I will write it somewhat like "Most people said they use email to communicate..." or "One person out of three said they prefer to post on message boards." etc. I will not talk about specific people, just talk very generally about what most people do. No one will be identified in any way. The only person who will read the paper will be me and my teacher, it will not be published anywhere. I will site the website and if there are any specific people who run this site who you feel I should site and credit just let me know!

Any one feel free to post!! I know this is an off the topic of buffy thread, but for whatever reason this thread was put here. So yeah, feel free to answer the questions! 🙂

1)What is the main goal of this community? In other words, why did you join? Is there some overall purpose of having this board in place?

I joined to talk about my favorite TV show.

2)What do people generally do one here? What are the more popular things that people do? Are you apart of one of the RPGs? (I know we can choose a dorm and be either "good" or "evil", I'm assuming that's RPG?)

Well, I generally will post about stuff regarding the show, or off-topic stuff, and I occasionally post some of my fanfics on here. I've never really been one for forum RPGs but I think if I tried it, I might like it.

3) How do you guys mainly communicate? Is it mainly through the boards? Through direct messages? And why? (because it's easier just to create a thread?)

Through posting. Occasionally I'll PM someone or someone will PM me.

4) Do you guys use certain words or terms that has a specific meaning for this community? For example, the adoption thread's title is "Bad Eggs". Out of the context of this site, that would have a totally different meaning. Also in your everyday communication are there just certain expressions or phrases that are widely used?

I just say the usual things, like Buffyverse' or any of the ship names (Tillow, Bangel, etc.)

5)Who are the most experienced member on here? And how can you tell who are the experienced ones, and who are the newcomers (like me!)

All depends on the time spent on here, I guess.

6)How do the new people on here learn the normal ways of interacting? (I know you there's the adoption option...)

I guess just starting to post and interacting with everyone on here.

7) Are there any conflicts within the community? So, are there any things that need to be worked on? Or certain groups of people that often maybe bump heads some times? (So just an example, do the people who like Angel more clash with the people who like Buffy more?)

Bangel vs Spuffy is the one that comes to mind. The arguement that will never die.

8)Are there people on here that seem to have more trouble than others? Like do newer fans have trouble keeping up with the older fans who know more about the shows? Or do the newcomers have more trouble adjusting to the "ways" of the site?

I'm not entirely sure, but I guess that's a possibility

9)Who is in charge? Who runs the site? (I'm assuming it's the moderators and administrators?)

The Mods.

10) Most of the people on here may have common interests. I'm guessing that one of those is knowledge about Joss Whedon and his other projects. Do you guys agree? Are there more things people on here generally tend to like? Like scifi shows?

I guess so...

11)Do you guys ever feel stereotyped in any way because of the fact that you post on an online board? I know for me if I talk about this outside of the boards it sort of categorizes me as a dork haha. Do you guys feel the same way? Are there other ways you feel stereotyped?

I do kinda feel stereotyped by people I know a little bit. I tend to ignore them.

1)What is the main goal of this community? In other words, why did you join? Is there some overall purpose of having this board in place?

Basicly what the name says, to talk about anything Buffy/Angel/Joss Whedon related 🙂 Also it's one of the best board I've seen community wise, we have great off topic discussion.

2)What do people generally do one here? What are the more popular things that people do? Are you apart of one of the RPGs? (I know we can choose a dorm and be either "good" or "evil", I'm assuming that's RPG?)

Mostly, I just post in thread/start thread discussions. I recently came back so it's a bit like being new all over again. I use to have quite a bit of friends around here, but most of them have left the board, so I don't communicate in private message anymore. Most popular thing I'd say is simply partaking in discussions on various thread. We also have that like/dislike button to give out reputation, so that's another feature that is quite well used. You can choose a house, there use to be 4 that you had to be sorted in (randomly) but now you can choose in between two. It's a la Harry Potter style. Just a sub-family in the big BB family.

3) How do you guys mainly communicate? Is it mainly through the boards? Through direct messages? And why? (because it's easier just to create a thread?)

Mainly through posts on the board, sometimes private messages.

4) Do you guys use certain words or terms that has a specific meaning for this community? For example, the adoption thread's title is "Bad Eggs". Out of the context of this site, that would have a totally different meaning. Also in your everyday communication are there just certain expressions or phrases that are widely used?

I think this is mainly seen with all the sub-forums. You can go through them and see that a lot of them are Buffy related. Everyday communication, I guess not really, aside from naming characters, episode and objects from the show. Lots of people also have usernames from the show (but not me lol)

5)Who are the most experienced member on here? And how can you tell who are the experienced ones, and who are the newcomers (like me!)

In my opinion the mods are the most experience ones, running the site and everything. They are doing a great job at it too! There's also quite a few members that have been here for years! Aside from that, everyone is on the same level, your opinion is not more or less important whether you're new or an old member.

6)How do the new people on here learn the normal ways of interacting? (I know you there's the adoption option...)

Yep, the adoption option, and the rest, well just introduce yourself and post a lot!

7) Are there any conflicts within the community? So, are there any things that need to be worked on? Or certain groups of people that often maybe bump heads some times? (So just an example, do the people who like Angel more clash with the people who like Buffy more?)

There's definitely a lot of strong heads on the board. And quite a few heated debates happen, but it's all fun and games (if things get serious or personal, the mods will intervene, but that rarely happens). I think the difference in opinion is actually great, it makes for great conversations instead of everyone agreeing with everyone. I also think that this keeps the board alive and interesting! The great thing about BB is that you can voice your opinion (as long as you remain respectful of others).

8)Are there people on here that seem to have more trouble than others? Like do newer fans have trouble keeping up with the older fans who know more about the shows? Or do the newcomers have more trouble adjusting to the "ways" of the site?

I wouldn't say so. I still have finished s8 and s9 of Buffy and it hasn't affected my activity on the board. I also haven't seen Firefly, and again, I just stay out of those forums. There's lots of places to post so it's not an issue if you haven't seen everything.

9)Who is in charge? Who runs the site? (I'm assuming it's the moderators and administrators?)

Yup, the mods do!

10) Most of the people on here may have common interests. I'm guessing that one of those is knowledge about Joss Whedon and his other projects. Do you guys agree? Are there more things people on here generally tend to like? Like scifi shows?

Well, being a BtVS/AtS fan is definitely a common interest, but aside from that, you really get a variety of different people with different interest.

11)Do you guys ever feel stereotyped in any way because of the fact that you post on an online board? I know for me if I talk about this outside of the boards it sort of categorizes me as a dork haha. Do you guys feel the same way? Are there other ways you feel stereotyped?

I don't really talk much about the board in my "real" life. It's not a big secret, nor am I embarrassed, but there's no point in me bringing it up as none of my friends or family show much interest in the show, so it's just not a subject matter.

1)What is the main goal of this community? In other words, why did you join? Is there some overall purpose of having this board in place?

I joined so I could talk about my favorite shows with other people and get their insight and interaction.

2)What do people generally do one here? What are the more popular things that people do? Are you apart of one of the RPGs? (I know we can choose a dorm and be either "good" or "evil", I'm assuming that's RPG?)

I just post topics or reply to topics and do a lot of reading. I don't always have anything to contribute but I read a lot. I'm not a part of any RPG's but I did pick a house. It's not very active though so I'm not really doing much with it other than checking in there once in awhile to see what people are talking about.

3) How do you guys mainly communicate? Is it mainly through the boards? Through direct messages? And why? (because it's easier just to create a thread?)

I only communicate through posts. No one has private messaged me for any reason, but that might change if I got to know people more. I'm still pretty new here.

4) Do you guys use certain words or terms that has a specific meaning for this community? For example, the adoption thread's title is "Bad Eggs". Out of the context of this site, that would have a totally different meaning. Also in your everyday communication are there just certain expressions or phrases that are widely used?

I don't think there's any special language or terms except maybe shipper names like Spuffy and Bangel. That might not make much sense to an outsider.

5)Who are the most experienced member on here? And how can you tell who are the experienced ones, and who are the newcomers (like me!)

The mods are the most experienced I'd say but there are some other posters who I can tell have been around a long time and are well known. You can see their post counts in their stats and that tells you how active they are.

6)How do the new people on here learn the normal ways of interacting? (I know you there's the adoption option...)

I just introduced myself and started posting. I didn't go the adoption route.

7) Are there any conflicts within the community? So, are there any things that need to be worked on? Or certain groups of people that often maybe bump heads some times? (So just an example, do the people who like Angel more clash with the people who like Buffy more?)

There are a few posters with very strong opinions on things but for the most part it seems everyone gets along pretty well. I haven't seen any real clashes.

8)Are there people on here that seem to have more trouble than others? Like do newer fans have trouble keeping up with the older fans who know more about the shows? Or do the newcomers have more trouble adjusting to the "ways" of the site?

I haven't noticed this. I'm a newcomer and haven't had trouble adjusting to the site. But I can't speak for other people or what their experience is.

9)Who is in charge? Who runs the site? (I'm assuming it's the moderators and administrators?)

The moderators

10) Most of the people on here may have common interests. I'm guessing that one of those is knowledge about Joss Whedon and his other projects. Do you guys agree? Are there more things people on here generally tend to like? Like scifi shows?

Everyone here is a Buffy or Angel fan so that helps. And a lot of people are Joss Whedon fans. But I think there are other common interests that people talk about here in the Bronze forum.

11)Do you guys ever feel stereotyped in any way because of the fact that you post on an online board? I know for me if I talk about this outside of the boards it sort of categorizes me as a dork haha. Do you guys feel the same way? Are there other ways you feel stereotyped?

I don't really talk about my participation in the forum with people outside the forum. Not because I'm embarrassed but because no one else I know watches the shows and wouldn't care. They already know I'm a little dorky anyway so it should come as no surprise.

Another Question I have...

One thing I have noticed is how almost everyone has said that they do feel stereotyped. I find this interesting because it almost categorizes us into a sort of "outcast" community (as scifi is generally categorized as- at least in my opinion) That's probably not the right word but I just can't think of a good one right now. Some people are embarrassed to like "dorky" things. But the people who show their interest are not afraid to like what they like, and I admire that quality in people. I feel as though people who like shows like Buffy are generally more open-minded and less judgmental. This is probably a huge generalization but I know I haven't met many people in the "real world" who like Buffy, but when I do it's almost like an instant connection, like if I know they like Buffy, I know I want to be their friend. Does anyone agree?? What do you guys think?
