Ive just been offered a new job which I have taken at the same place I work at the moment but doing 6pm till 6am and Im not sure how I feel about it. The plus side is I'll make £320 a week the downside is I have no freetime till the weekend. Also I start at 6pm on a sunday and finish at 6am on a friday.

I'll Think it'll be alright for me. But might have to change my lesiure activties. Probally sell my ps3 for dvds I'll have no time to game and I'll be tired most of the time. But I'll see how it goes just though Id let you guys know!

P.S. Also I wont be able to come on here quite as often!

Congrats on the offer! :)

Congrats - I hope it works out well for you
My hubby used to work 3rd shift. Here's a few pointers:
- Black out your windows. Get some really thick black cloth or trash bags or something and make sure no light gets into your bedroom. You'll never sleep otherwise.
- Don't spend all your time sleeping. You'll want to; working overnight really throws off your clock. But make sure you get outside before the sun goes down, because otherwise you're looking at vitamin D deficiencies, seasonal affective disorder, and all sorts of crap that goes along with not enough sunlight.
- Make sure to keep eating. It'll be weird cause the times you'd normally eat you're either just going to work, just getting off work, or asleep. You might have to force yourself to remember to eat.
- Don't sell your PS3. When you have time to play, do so. Cause otherwise all you do is sleep and work, and that gets really old really fast.

Good luck!

can't you also get vitamin D through stuff like fish oil?

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I should keep my ps3 even if its only for the Blu-Ray dvd player!

You're quite welcome. I hope it helps!
Wow, working 12 hours a day? That's gotta be hard, I already complain for having school from 8am to 3pm!
Plus, how can you keep up social contacts like this efficiently? I mean, by the time they're back from work you'll have to start working, and by the time you return they'll have to get ready for work themselves again.

Well, congratulations and good luck. I hope everything works out fine.

Yeah, but that doesn't take care of the seasonal affective disorder.

The social thing is not much of a problem dont see friends during week. I meet my mates at parties and at pub so can do that just as easily.

Congrats! We'll miss you here on BB though

Thankyou thats nice! I will come on as often as possible not leaving you guys your all to great 🙂

Sounds bad, but when you get used to it it'll be okay. There's plenty of other people who work 6 to 6 at night and they still have a social life. And there are benefits, the shops are open when your not working, you can ring people when they are at work. And when you are going home they are going to work.
It just needs you to accept a few changes. What days off do you get?
There is a downside though, you might start watching Passions!

My days off are from 6am firday morning till 6pm sunday night.

Congrats! But those shifts sound really harsh...a couple of family members work similar shifts to those but one is on a "four days on/four days off" basis and the other gets some serious time off as part off his shift pattern. You seem to be doing seriously long hours without the bonus of decent chunks of time off in between...I hope it goes OK for you.

I only know that I could never go back on to shift work...those early mornings starts were a killer, even when I was a lot younger...*shudder* 🙂

Congrats on the job hun but mind yourself! My father used to do the night shift and it was seriously tough on him, he was on it for a few years and it sent him completely out of wack. I wouldn't stay on it too long.

Yeah the free time sucks but the £320 a week does not 🙂

oh 8 weeks isn't too ba especially with the money you will be making and sice you wont have free time you wont be able to spend it!
Congrats on the job! 😀 Im sure you will find out soon enough if it is the lifestyle for you, Good luck 🙂

It´s always good to get joboffers, so congrats!

To me it sound like £320 a week is a huge upside to you, and of course money´s always welcome. But how important it´s to you I don´t know. Having to work 6 to 6 in the long run isn´t anything I personally do. But to do it for 8 weeks and get paid a lot more and then have the opportunity to go back to my old work is something I would definitely do. And it´s not like your social life will disappear totally.

But you´re not me so it´s totally your decision (duh! As you didn´t know.). Just how much are the extra money worth compared to what you´ll be missing?

I dont really miss much, just charmed time and ps3 time at night. Weekends will be the same really. Losing a couple of hours a night for a £130 pay increase is definatly worth it.

Good luck.

I will warn you, though... you should take vitamins. Get vitamin C and whatnot. When I work consistently long shifts without any downtime, it's really tough on me. I get sick and lost time for other priorities and, basically, everything suffers. Just make sure you can handle it for 8 weeks and that the workload doesn't become a permanent thing. Last time I worked hours like that, I was a salaried employee and I didn't even get overtime pay, which didn't help at all. I got sick and couldn't afford to take time off to go to the doctor (because of productivity). I didn't have time to job search for a better position. I got burnt out, but got no relief. I ended up losing my job and really screwing up my life. Don't let that happen to you. If it becomes too much, admit it and find a new position. The time before that, I was doing shift work, but on an irregular schedule. I would close Fridays, double on Saturdays, open on Sundays, then work evening shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays (and sometimes Wednesdays). That time, I realized there was a problem and limited my availability so that I wouldn't have to close, then double, then open. The result? I did well and eventually got promoted. The more self-aware path was definitely the better option.

I completely sympathize with anyone that has to work nights. I don't work every night but usually I do Fridays 5pm till 3am (sometimes starting early or finishing late depending on when I'm needed) and then generally work till 1am most other nights. If you think it will kill your social life - you're right! The other option is that you just start spending time with people working the same hours as you.

I agree with Blondie Bears advice - especially about the eating right part. One of my biggest mistakes at work is being rushed off my feet, having 15 minutes to grab something to eat, and it being midnight. It's so easy to resort to eating McDonalds and the like, but it really brings down your energy levels making the crappy hours seem even worse.

Just got home for my 1st night shift and thought Id let you guys know how it went. It went quite quickly to be honest Im working with 7 other people who I havent really seen before but are great guys my supervisor is awesome and is teaching me loads of different skills already. Found out my pay will be more than £320 and will be around £350 - £360. Also It could last longer than 8 weeks. I think once I get my sleep pattern worked our correctly Im really going to enjoy it.

Great to hear it went well
Just done my 1st week of nights Im really tired they are hard as hell! Just found out Im getting a second week of nights which will kill me lol 😛 But I plan on seeing a certain BB member abroad soon so it all helps on the money front. Just thought Id share!

I wish I could work nights again. For my job now I have to get up at 8 in the morning and I HATE it. I never get to see anyone because most of my friends are night people so I always wake up in the morning and see phone calls and text messages that I've missed. Just make sure you take Melatonin too. That might help. I'm trying to find a night job now but so far haven't had any luck. I just don't think I should ever have to wake up before noon. That seems like a perfectly reasonable time to me.
