New Rules at School...

Today was my first day back to school. I'm a junior at my town's High School. Yes, I'm almost there! Only two years left. Anyway, there were some new rules that were put into affect, and I was wondering what you guys thought about these rules.

1. If you're late, you have office detention. - Office detention means you sit in the main office for the whole 6 hour day. They've also tacked on an extra 2 hours. So, in total, you're sitting in the main office doing absolutely nothing for 8 days. In my school, you only have 15 absenses before they start talking away some of your credits. If you're late twice, they start taking days off your allotted absent time.

I think that is ridiculous. I'm 17-years-old and I'm a driver. Juniors and Seniors are aloud to drive to school and park in the student parking lot. Sometimes cars have problems and they won't start, or get a flat, or something. Even if I didn't drive, nothing is always certain and someone in the family could need me real quick or I could be sick and really struggling that day. It's not fair to punish people like that. If I have a reason that I'm late, and not just "I didn't feel like coming at that time," or "I didn't get up in time," and they try to give me office detention and take away my sick days, there will be a huge problem. I'm never late anyway, but now that I'm driving problems always arise. Still. There is someone in my school that comes from NY every morning. He can't control whether he's late or not! If he's commuting 3 hours to and 3 hours from school every day, that is someone who really wants an eduction, and punishing him for being late is stupid when he's trying to hard as it!

2. No water bottles aloud. - Students can no longer bring water bottles to school to drink during class. In the past, student's have been permitted to bring water bottles with only water in them. No juice, no soda, no beer. Just water. Now, student's can not bring water bottles to school period. The reason for this is because last year a Senior brought vodka to school in a water bottle and no one knew because it was a clear liquid and looked like water.

This is another stupid rule too! Our school has no air conditioning, and the heater doesn't work right. Which means that all year round the class rooms and hallways are at least 80 degrees. Our school has no fans or ventilation system of any kind. That's really unsafe for students and teachers. That's germs and whatever else floating around the school all the time. People have allergies and get sick all the time at school. If someone has to go to school when they're sick, how can they possibly keep themselves hydrated and keep dringking fluids if they can't even have water? You may just think we can go use the water fountains, but all of our teachers say that we're big kids now and can not leave the class to use the fountains. You can only use them between classes. That's crap because we only have 3 minutes to get from class to class anyway.

And we have aerobics twice a week, Monday and Thursday. That's us running for 5 minutes, stretching, doing fast pace exercise for 25 minutes, and then running for another 10. With no ventilation and the school being 80 degrees, can you imagine the kids coming out of there? How terrible they must feel? They're going to get dehydrated or have no strength at all. Why don't they have us work out on the farms all day. We'll dehydrate and die faster that way.

I really think my school needs to stage some sort of civil rebellion because we're not to be treated like cattle...

Wow, those rules are pretty harsh! I understand that a school needs to have consequences for tardies, but sitting in an office for eight hours seems a little extravagant. As for the no water bottle rule, well, that seems ridiculous to me. People need to drink water! And most teachers (at my school at least) don't let us use the drinking fountains during class.

I went to a private school where we were given after school detention for having untucked shirts and slouchy knee socks. We were allowed to chew gum though which wasn't so bad 😀

...slouchy knee socks.

What can I say? Private schools are scary and I'd so totally'd spent all of my time in detention with rules like that.

No public schools are the shit, I didn't even get detention when I posted a bunch of coloured pictures of George W (the ones you can print of the White House webpage, for kids to colour in) with some anti-slogans on, all over school. Gotta love Sweden for not taking politics so serious, or perhaps that's the reason why you shouldn't like Sweden?

Hehe, nah that's a reason to like Sweden Ape, definitely 😀
And yeah , private schools are scary... (And don't even try to tell someone that my school is a private school, 'cause it so is not.)

Detention has to be the most useless thing ever. Seriously, what's the point of it?

Detention doesn't really have a point. You do something wrong then you get detention which is just sitting in a room for an hour after school. When people at my school got detention most of them didn't even go.That's why they made a new rule that if you miss detention they suspend you for a day.I'm so glad I graduated because my school was getting too strict.I heard that this year they are gonna start using uniforms.

Anyway on topic,I do think that the new rules at your school are kinda extreme. No water bottles come on!!That is the worst rule they can ever make.Students be getting thirsty at school just like the teachers but somehow teachers are always allowed to have drinks, food, and use their cell phones on campus.I think that if they make some rules at school that they should apply to both teachers and students. At my old school, students aren't allowed to have cell phones on them because they "disrupt class."But teachers have them and they be ringing all the time. They don't even have the consideration to put them on vibrate. If that's the case why can't students have phones?!The teachers have problems and we have problems. They have emergencies and we have emergencies. They have kids and we have kids.Well some of us.Anyway I don't think that the schools consider both teachers and students when the make their stupid rules.Sorry i rambled so much 😀

that's so true
Well, Hero, that kinda sucks...the water thing especially, since banning water bottles won't stop the students who want to drink vodka in class from doing that anyway...kinda seems stupid. If the student council was smart, they'd have only one type of water bottle allowed, and sell it to the students...might raise a bit of cash, there!

The late thing...all I can say is cover yer ass with notes if you can. I was late for work once for a flat, and I just showed up in Labour Relations (the adult version of "the office") covered in dirt, and with scratched up hands. They didn't want to believe me, so I actually took 'em out and showed 'em the spare on my car. When the dickhead said "How do I know you didn't change a good tire just to cover yourself?" (I was 10 minutes late, BTW) I told him he was a ****ing idiot, and that it took longer than 10 minutes to change a spare, and why would I even bother? So, I showed him the flat, and I STILL had to go to his supervisor to get it straightened out...so my point, long and boring as it is, is that stupidity doesn't only exist in schools. If anything, it even gets worse when you get out and working. No consolation, I know, but there you go!
