New Show for J.A. Richards

J. August Richards is in the cast of a new hour long legal drama premiering this March on NBC, titled Conviction. The show is centered on young Assistant District Attorneys in New York City. It will air on Friday nights at 10pm. J. August Richards will get to play a lawyer again!

J. August Richards ("Angel""Angel") and Jordan Bridges ("Mona Lisa Smile""Mona Lisa Smile") also are onboard in key roles for the skein, which has just starting lensing in Gotham. Walon Green and Rick Eid wrote the pilot and will exec produce with Wolf.

Richards will play a snobby attorney who's trying to claw his way to the top.

Bridges is set to play a well-connected lawyer who leaves a private law firm to work for the DA's office.

Also in the cast is Eric Balfour, who played Jesse in the first two episodes of BtVS-"Welcome to the Hellmouth" and "The Harvest".

Nice to see alums of Joss Whedon's shows getting new gigs! 🙂
 
Law & Order is one of the best shows on tv, and i think JA will be great for the role. Hey...isnt it funny how Wolf adds people from Angel? I mean, with Elisabeth roam after Angel s2, and now JA Richards...doesnt sound like a coincedence to me..

"Conviction" is the most original show Wolf has created in years. It's still a crime drama, of course. But unlike the "Law & Order" franchise, "Conviction," which debuts March 3 on NBC, actually cares about developing its characters as much as their caseloads.

Maybe I'll actually watch a Dick Wolf show...weird, lol.
 
Oh coolness! I hope we get that show over here...it looks interesting! I like the Law and Order franchise, so i'm sure this'd be just as good. Thanks for the news nerd4hire!

Edit: Oh ok in the picture, the girl with the glasses looks like Alex from SVU! Oh it is lol...wow ok interesting.
 
OK, so, did anyone actually watch this? lol

I thought it got off to an impressive start. I guess I'd compare it to something like a standard Law & Order drama, mixed with a dash of the West Wing. And maybe a little sprinkle of some WB soap, or something.

No truly hatable characters, no totally bland empty shells. In fact, they actually did seem to have personalites and personal lives. Eric Balfour got a good dose of screentime...as a bit of a good-hearted rogue. J. August Richards seems pretty far down on the totem pole, sadly. Apparently, he's kind of a power hungry ladder-climber. Hopefully, they'll highlight his character more in the future.

The fun was in witnessing all the young characters' foibles and f-ups at work.
 
I just kind of caught it out of the corner of my eye. It looked reasonably well done. The Eric Balfour character grabbed my attention briefly. I found myself regretting Gilmour Girls was on opposite Boston Legal, because I wanted to watch Boston Legal. I don't know what that means, but honest to god, that's what I was thinking.

No, wait, I figured it out. It was like baby-sitting someone else's kid. You're watching them out of the corner of your eye, and they're not too horrible, so you're thinking, "hey, maybe I could have a kid".
 
Yeah, I hear ya. I confess, this is not something I'd normally even watch.

I didn't actually "watch" it. I taped it, then watched just to see if it was watchable, lol. I'm a sad little wannabe film critic I guess, heh.

It's kind of amazing that TV shows can ever just...get started and actually build up a loyal audience. It's such a passive sort of medium...

I was surprised how much I liked it. It almost had a dramedy sort of feel at times.
 
I really liked it a lot, though the main character I didn't find that likeable. It's more the other male characters that are interesting. The female characters I don't think were fleshed out enough in this episode - it was almost difficult to tell them apart. But I would assume future eps would deal with them more.
 
I'm a long time fan of Dick Wolf's original Law and Order and Law and Order SVU. I'm not sure about this show, it's definitely a departure stylewise for Dick Wolf. Not to say that all his shows are alike, each is distinctive. But this premiere had so many stories going on, there wasn't much focus on any single story. I guess it was meant to convey an atmosphere of craziness, so many cases coming down on too few lawyers all at once-I imagine a real prosecutors' office might get like that. But still, the lack of focus on one legal story felt odd.

J. August Richards' Billy Desmond character didn't get too much screen time in the premiere-his case got sort of cut out from under his feet. I think different characters will get the focus in different episodes.

Eric Balfour's Brian Peluso character didn't make too much impression on me. Just that I hope they don't overemphasize his off-duty life in the episodes to come.

Seemed like the female prosecutor who got the most courtroom story in the premiere was Christina Finn, played by Julianna Nicholson.
 
I forgot to mention an obvious comparison: ER! Just like the young new medical interns who jump into the fray. A large ensemble cast, lots of competing storylines...

I agree, the main character was kind of a stiff. I guess he's supposed to be like a young "John Carter". An idealistic rich kid, naive, etc...

I did enjoy the performance of the one female who was trying her first case. I think she's got potential.

I agree. And just like ER and Grey's Anatomy, I really enjoyed it. It was one of the only programs I have seen lately and I think it was worth the hour of my time. I liked that the focus was on the characters rather than the cases, and I also enjoy the whole multiple competing storylines thing. I do hope the female characters are developed more, there is a lot of potential there.
 
Those of us who are L&O SVU fans are waiting to see where the Dick Wolf world will go with the Alex Cabot character, played by Stephanie March. She exited that show back in October of 2003 when her character went into witness protection.

I think there will be a crossover between L&O SVU and Conviction before too long.
 
I'm liking it so far & hoping to see more of J's character in depth. Exploring both their personal lives & the cases is a great balance in my opinion. The lack of that is why I don't watch other law shows.
