New Speculative Fiction on TV

The Doctor Who thread got me thinking of Sci Fi on TV in general. There seems to be less now than there was, but it's worth discussing. What's the best out there right now?

Some examples;

Doctor Who Haven't seen it yet. Here's the Doctor Who thread.

Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars Saw it yesterday. Frelling Fahrbot wonderful.

The New Battlestar Gallactica It looks well done, but quite frankly I tried to watch it twice, and it put me to sleep both times.

There is less about n4h but if you look for it there are some great sci-fi shows out there - the three you mentioned are the ones that sprang to my mind. I'd recommend that you persevere with the new Galactica, I thought it was wonderful, from the mini-series to the cliff-hanger ending of season one...and I didn't like the original Galactica a whole lot 😉

You have no idea how true this is in France!

Let's me think, in here you have choice... Dead Zone,which looks always the same epi after epi, NCIS & Nip / Tuck , never watched those but don't seem so enthralling, 10th rerun of Charmed & Stargate SG-1 (get boring after the 3rd time if you know what I mean😛), 7th heaven ... errr, too lovey dovey for me.

What about Alias, Veronica Mars, or the one you talk about... no idea but channels don't seem to want to show these

Wonder why we "have" to use the downloading option then :look: ?

Shows like Alias, Charmed, and Dead Zone would fit into the Genre TV genre of which Sci-fi is a part.

Stargate would apply, as strictly Sci-Fi, but it's old. On the other hand the last half of this current season has really excelled, and what about Stargate: Atlantis? Anyone seen that yet?

Hey, is there any local Science Fiction in other countries like France?

I really liked the first season of Atlantis. Good stories, not too bad acting and Chief O'Brien played a bad guy 🙂 I would've liked more crossovers with SG1 tho' but perhaps it's best they try to stand on their own two feet.

SG1 is pretty much pure SF, as far as I'm concerned, and all the better for it. I've been watching a lot of early season repeats of late and it's by no means as lame and cheesey as I recall...perhaps they're better viewed in hindsight 🙂

I love SG1. Richard Dean Anderson is fantastic and absolutely hilarious! JAck and Sam should get together!

Tried watching Stargate Atlantis, but the bad guys absolutely terrified me, and there was always other stuff on so I missed it. Also, no RDA 🙁

Another interesting new one that may or may not apply here is Lost.

The jury's still out on what exactly Lost is.

I mean is it science fiction? Is it paranormal fantasy? Is it just one of those surreal, Twin Peaksian, brainbusters dumbed down for Average-Joe America?

Not seen it yet but from what I've read it's definitely SF...possibly in it's broadest sense...I tend to use SF btw as defined by Harlan Ellison as Speculative Fiction rather than sci-fi...for me that includes fantasy, spy-fi, Twin Peaks, Gormenghast...basically anything that might be labelled "genre"...

Good point Pointy. 🙂 I'd forgotten about that term. I changed the thread title from Sci Fi to Speculative fiction. Originally I was going to say Genre, but I wasn't sure everyone would know what I was talking about, so I thought I'd concentrate on science fiction. Broader is better though, I think, so now it's spec fic. Speaking of Harlan I'll bet he'd hate anyone saying spec fic. I know he hated the term sci fi. 🙂

Is it just me or has the term speculative fiction kind of been fading away as the term "Genre" gains in popularity. I liked "speculative fiction" better. The Genre genre is getting too broad. I can see stuff like Alias, Mission Impossible or James Bond, but I'm seeing people adding shows like Simpsons, 24 and CSI. I mean what's next, The Sopranos?

i want to see a new star trek series...on a cable network...

a series to breath life into a detiorating franchise...

i'm thinking...klingon ship...raping and pillaging the galaxy...ahh...crazy space battles and batleth hand to hand combat with blood and dismemberment...that would be grand...and strong characters...completely opposite to the ones that are getting canned...
