New Spike Mini Series

Just a question about the new Spike mini series beginning in October. This is supposed to be the story that leads into the crossover into Dark Horse's Buffy and explains just where Spike got his new ship, who the crew are, and show the events that lead up to his upcoming appearance in the last arc of Season 8. Season 8 is supposed to end, if no further delays occur, in January of 2011, but the 8 part Spike mini series isn't complete at least four months after that. Has anyone else ever heard of a prequel that actually lasted past the finale of a series, of has Joss set another milestone in the entertainment business?
