New to the forum and I have a question

Hi people,

New to the forum and I'm glad to be here. LONG time Buffy fan. At any rate, I was curious who was responsible for continuing Buffy beyond Season 5? For me, Season 5 would have been the perfect end point for Buffy, but instead the series was continued past its prime and ended with the disastrous Season 7. Ugh. At any rate, I'm curious if it was Whedon's doing or the executive producers, Fran and Rubel Kuzui? I'm just curious and thanks a bunch....

As for the question about Season 5, best I can tell is that 20th century Fox wanted more money to license the series (which explains the network switch), and though it was unlikely, it was possible that, if they couldn't get more money out of a network for the show, they'd cancel the show. For that reason, they handled it like a series finale because they weren't entirely certain what was going to happen with the show.

I agree that the end of Season 5 would be a perfect series finale, and even though I do like some of the things in the last two seasons, it still just feels weird that it kept going.

The Kuzui's had very little to do with the TV show. As I understood it, because Joss was so busy with "Firefly" and "Angel", Marti Noxon acted as the show runner for the last couple years.

Quite a few people agree that the Season 5 would have been a better series finale than Season 7, in fact, I've known a fe who even go so far as to insist that it DID end there, and that Seasons 6 and 7 were actually in an alternate universe, something like the Wishverse reality. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the last two seasons, and I've even enjoyed, to a lesser degree, Seasons 8 and 9. As my dear ol' daddy used to say, that's why they make more than one flavor of ice cream, so you can pick have a choice.

Welcome to BB! I know that a lot of fans are were huge on on the S5 finale and while I understand the sentiment and didn't think that the final two seasons were absolute home runs by any means, on the whole I'm glad they kept going. I'm not entirely sure why, but I didn't like the idea of Buffy dying in the series finale. It just, I don't know, didn't appeal to me in the way that it did to others I suppose. While "Chosen" has its flaws, and white I undoubtedly think that the first three seasons of the show are the best, I'm glad it ended the way it did.

Buffy dying isn't the end of the story. The hell mouth was still open, her friends were still in Sunnydale. I would have had too many questions about what became of them all. Obviously there's always those sorts of questions when a series ends but Buffy dying wouldn't have ended the story, what happens when the next demon tries to end the world? Do they succeed? Do the scoobies (with or without a replacement slayer?) stop them? And then there'll always be more threats the safety of the world.

Nothing is solved by Buffy dying - except in the short term. Sunnydale had to be destroyed, the hellmouth closed up. The lives of all the characters as they've been since series one when Buffy arrived completely changed forever.

Plus, if it had ended with series five, I already knew months in advance that she died so that would have been ending on a really sour note for me.

The real reason they were going to finish the show at end of season 5 was that Buffy had tried to iron her leather trousers, she had the heat setting too high. Seasons 6 and 7 were about Buffy trying to replace them.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome, buffy-boarders. And thanks for the great responses, thus far. The collectivist/communtarian aspect of the entire "Potential" line left me in mental anguish during the 7th season. I so very much wanted Buffy to end with a Beatrix Kiddo/Crazy 88-like finale, but instead we have something else entirely. What the writers gave us is subpar to what should have been, in my opinion. But alas, I don't think I've ever been happy with the finale of any series that I've truly loved (with the exception of Six Feet Under). I personally blame Whedon, but I could be wrong in that. I'm not a huge fan of Joss Whedon, and really the only thing he's done that I like (no, love) is Buffy. The stars aligned for him on this one, because I do not believe there could have been a better cast for Buffy under any other circumstances.
At any rate, I do very much like white avenger's suggestion that perhaps seasons 6 and 7 occur in an alternate universe, if for nothing else than to bring to a simmer my nearly decade long hatred for how the series ended and for those who ruined my life.....
 
Welcome to the board! I don't know who decided to keep going with the series except the people with the money wanted more shows. But I actually liked season 6 so I'm glad it didn't end with 5. However I dislike season 7 and can think of a million other ways in which I wish the series had ended. But I think its hard to end a much loved series and have people be satisfied. There's always gonna be someone who doesn't like it. But if it had ended with Buffy's death that just would have been too sad for me and left a lot of questions as to what happens to the gang. So I'm glad they kept going even if the result of that was a less than stellar ending in my books.
