New way to earn House Points: Episode Discussion!

Oh, and just to clear a misconception up. Nowhere in my original post about this way to earn points did I verbally say "just post crap to get house points". Nor can you read between the lines and form the thought that 'one worded agreements are okay in this forum, but not in other forums, because the mods are a bunch of morons who have no idea what they're doing and don't care about the boards."

I said it once. I'll say it again.

This competition is for participation in the Episode discussion groups. Participating means actively engaging in an activity, just in case anybody was confused. We are not awarding the points to the house with the most chit-chat in the weekly discussions. We are simply figuring out how many members per house are actively engaging (participating) in the discussion. Hey, there's the phrase again: actively engaging.

And please don't try to pass off the discussion threads as a booming place of interest on the boards. There are very few who frequent them. The most post count on an episode is around 20. And those are normally discussions that get taken off-track by posts that really don't pertain to the episode.

Therefore, a new way to get this section up and running. 🙂

Thank you,
and goodnight!

Quite! I also know there is a block on people just posting I agree annyway, I think this is a good idea.
I like the idea.

Seriously, how hard can it be to not actively try to misuse ideas like this.
I find it quite sad that it's even an issue...

Instead I see it as a cool way to collect some points to our beloved houses.
All you got to do is to write down your thoughts and wonderings about Buffy episodes. Seems kinda fitting for a board like this 🙂

Thanks! :)
Since there has been such an uproar, I'd like to take the time to say, THANKS SpikedBuffy, I think it's a GREAT idea. And here's why.......
1.) I kinda want to discuss the show more.
2.) If it's in cahoots with the group viewings, perhaps that will get more people in the IRC, which is just fun and a good board bonding time.
3.) All the other Comps are asking us to branch out from our normal "posting" to do this or that (Make banners, find donkeys.....) why not this one? Especially if it helps the boards by upping use to a forum that is in need? Personally, I think this sounds like a more doable thing for ME to do to help Merrick. (I didn't even understand the Donkey one, exactly)
Some people can't make banners, but of us have a good general knowledge of the shows even if we don't own the DVDs.
4.) I've looked at the discussions and people aren't just posting "I agree" and running off. Everyone is saying SOMETHING.
5.) Unless you're one of the first posters to the thread, you don't really HAVE to have seen the episode right then. You can comment from memory or read through to see other people's posts.

As an added bonus, just for Clem Rocks....I give you this link. There's at least the first couple of seasons that you can watch online. Which may help, at least for now, for the people without the DVDs

BTW, just for BotD, when was the last time people offered to reward you for inputting your opinion on something? One would think you'd be PLEASED!

I know I've complained (often, and usually pretty loudly, and mostly to Lou) that there's not enough BUFFY discussion going on here anymore. I think it's a great idea. I'm in!

I complain about it too... Let´s hope now ^^
At the end of the day if you don't like the idea don't take part in the threads, i'm not a big fan of posting games so i don't take part and let the others have their fun. The new features that staff and members suggest are always subject to trial periods, mistakes may be made and we learn from them and adapt things accordingly. So instead of shooting down an idea right from the start why not give it a good and see how it turns out after all its from the current features and ideas that we are inspired to provide new ones for the boards.

For anyone that still has an issue about 'points for just posting' I suggest your read SpikedBuffy's most recent post on what is considered active posting.

FIRST of all, I have not tried to discourage people from posting their opinions, I just find the idea of this completely wrong. You shouldn't be rewarding people just for posting.

There is a problem that people don't post in these sections.

I find it hilarious that people 'want to' but have numerous reasons why they haven't.
If you WANT to discuss Buffy on a Buffy Board, you have the opportunity. There is no secret way to do it, what you do is go to that section and POST.

I voiced my concerns at how silly this idea seemed to be, when there are other methods that allow the board to retain its integrity AND encourage people to post.

My problem, so far, has been that I'm always on a totally different rotation schedule than the episodes that are being discussed. So, when I've gone in there, they're either lots of seasons ahead or behind what I am.
With the BBtv thrown in the mix, (and the fact that I was almost ready to start over anyway), it creates a whole different mood.
If even a small group of people are watching the same episodes as I am, then that makes it a little bit more exciting.
Surely THAT part isn't so far over your head that you can't see it.

Except for the fact that things have a way here of being constantly regurgitated.
The episode discussions are not closed, JUST because someone decided to put a deadline for you to have an opinion, doesn't mean you have to post only until that time.
You can go into the section and post. Your argument would be fine IF the threads were closed but they are not.
Surely THAT part isn't so far over your head that you can't see it.

Okay, so this has gotten a little ridiculous.

If you don't want to read the posts in these two forums, when you come to the board, scroll down to Episode Discussion Groups and double click on the icon to mark them read. Presto - the "integrity" of your new posts link is intact...

Remember this is number of dorm members posting, not number of posts...

Bottom line is: we are trying this. If it doesn't work out, we won't do it anymore. It's as simple as that. It's a little premature for everyone to be having a cow about it, so let's everyone just chill and move on.

As its you, I'll stop. All I did was give my opinion on the idea, which OTHERS supported by the way, and also gave some suggestions that COULD allow this to continue. Participation and all that malarky:)
Sorry, moving on now. Got pre posted by the boss woman!

BOTD, I'm assuming that rep to Lou was meant jokingly, as you yourself repped me with your response which amounts to the same thing.

Now.

Bored of the Dead agrees: All I did was give my opinion on the idea, which OTHERS supported by the way, and also gave some suggestions that COULD allow this to continue. Participation and all that malarky🙂

First of all, this WILL continue, at least for a trial period, anyway. Also, as this has not yet become a problem, there was no need for you to give solutions. IF it DOES become a problem, which I honestly don't think it will or we wouldn't have tried it in the first place, we will certainly consider your suggestions.

Now, can we PLEASE move on to more important things?

E
Edmund Blackadder
You know me, I like a larf:) HOWEVER, my suggestion was not a solution, it was a method to actually 'reward' those who posted a well thought out response - in fact, even if you're little thing works, surely rewarding intelligent posts is a positive
Oh FOR GOD'S SAKE! We ALREADY REWARD FOR INTELLIGENT POSTS. YOU YOURSELF BOTD COMMENTED ON THAT FACT EARLIER IN THIS THREAD.

You know, not everyone is going to make an earth-shatteringly brilliant post that they are going to get points for. I myself am included in that group. But EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE and there IS NOTHING WRONG WITH REWARDING PEOPLE FOR THAT.

So SORRY for trying to add new activities that MIGHT add a bit of discussion and fun that isn't in the SODDING SOCIAL STUDIES FORUM.

We'll be sure to just leave everything as it is in future and never try ANTHING NEW.

Bored of the Dead and SpoonsAreCool - I would be HAPPY to remove your access to the Episode Discussion forums for you if this bothers you so much.

Of you're going to reply, please do it in a post. Though I would strongly suggest letting this drop.

Bored of the Dead agrees: a) why are you attacking Spoons? b) I meant make the 50 point bonus for the post NOT the 5 point - you don't have to make Earth shattering points, just a well written post🙂 Someone needs a chill pill🙂

a) I'm not attacking Spoons. But the two of you want to make cute little comments to illustrate how horrible you think the Episode Discussion Groups are going to be, I'm happy to make it so you don't have to worry about it anymore.

b) The person who needs a chill pill is you my friend. I shouldn't have to go ten rounds with you about a problem that isn't even a problem. We've heard your opinion, we get it. We've told you if what you think is going to happen actually happens, we'll discontinue it. Why then are you still arguing about?

Wait - what you're really saying is that you're upset that a good post only gets 5 points and we're offering 50 points a week to a house? Is that what this tirade is really about?

I picked 50 points out of the air. But 50 points a week per house = 10 good posts - and we can give a lot more karmas in a week than 10.

I'm not the one who seems to be getting all heated and posting in capitals, I don't need to chill as I am very chilled already - just commenting on the plans, giving my opinion on how the thread was started.

I am NOT the only one who saw this thread starting with unclear parameters of what was being asked. Initially it looked like as long as a member posted anything in the thread, they would be counted, something Keanoite actually seemed to affirm with the following comment

Who is anyone to question the quality or merit of someone's posts? If that is their opinion they are entitled to it, even if it is just to agree with another member.

This has since been cleared up.

At what point did I say I was upset that the 5 points were given as a good post?

You have TOTALLY misunderstood what I was suggesting that has nothing to do with good posts.
I'll make it clear WHAT I was suggesting in place of the initial unclear premise.
Rather than praise a house based on how many members posted in the particular discussion, the onus of the 'reward' would fall on the person who posted.
This would be basically the MODs reading the posts and deciding which, of the weekly discussions posts, was the most intelligent, profound, well written (whatever criteria you wish to use to ascertain a victor) comment within that discussion, and the 'winners' house gaining the points - Maybe even involving badges with links attached to get people to read the comments and possibly getting involved that way.
This would retain the emphasis on actual posts and discussion NOT on the amount of comments left.
So, what I REALLY am saying is that on the ORIGINAL unclear premise, the idea of post counts over post quality was rather unappealing SO I REALLY thought a better way to accomplish what you desired AND retain integrity would be to focus on the individual posts.

As the actual parameters have finally been cleared up, we'll see as IF people join in this is redundant, however if it goes tits up, you have other possibilities - that lets be honest you won't consider because I am the one making the suggestion and it wouldn't be good if ideas I had were taken on board because it would look like you are endorsing everything I have said in this thread and that will never happen - right🙂

Love you Buffy Summers🙂

Though I would strongly suggest letting this drop.
Will do now Buffy Summers but ONLY because its you and I know you love me really😛:nibble6::fighting1

Kid, you aint seen me retaliate, do you wish to? I have a bit too much respect for this place to turn anything into retaliation. Because believe it or not I found that generally humorous. I would not run to another thread like a 12 year old (ya catch that one?) to retaliate.

Hahaha 'kid' you tried to patronise but all you did was look foolish. Bless you scobro, bless you!
Please respect what Buffy Summers had to say on this topic matter and bring it to a close.

You are both clearly referring to something else so please either take it privately or discuss it constructively in the relevant thread. I am sure you are both capable of that.
